Verifiability is a cornerstone of Wikipedia, and is one of the policies that has served as part of the bedrock of editing philosophy. "The threshold for inclusion on Wikipedia is Verifiability, not truth." While this simple and strict statement has been a source of derision by many newcomers, switching the focus from truth to verifiability is part of what allows Wikipedia to function. In an encyclopedia built by volunteers, in which no real vetting of an individual's expert status is feasible, this policy simplifies discussion greatly. Instead of relying on debate over the validity of a fact or viewpoint, the debate focuses on the easier to tackle issue of whether it is verifiable. Even if experts could be vetted, this philosophy is still preferable. Allowing experts to run the show would merely invite them to introduce their personal biases into articles. ~Someguy1221

Allegations of COI and the COIN fiascoExcept for my very first run of newbie stupid in September 2011, I actually did do what I was supposed to do regarding the fish articles. No reason to cry over spilled milk but at least now my mind is at ease knowing that I acted above board from day one. I did disclose/declare COI on the talk pages of both paddlefish and sturgeon before any edits were made to the fish articles in 2014. Oct 14, 2011, Oct 14, 2011 The only response I received to my posts on the TPs of those articles was made on the Paddlefish TP 2 years later from an editor who collaborated with me on all of the subject articles plus a few others: I don't think any video showing people caught into questionable activities would fly here, unless the article was exactly about these questionable activity and those people. There would be concerns related to WP:BLP and privacy. About the documentary, that is probably a decent external link. By the way, why you editing the paddlefish article(s) would imply COI? Are you a paddlefish? --cyclopiaspeak! 15:00, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Also, same editor participated in the Alligator gar GA review and he knew about the COI as evidenced above. He had no issue with the inline citations to Earthwave. In fact, he insisted on keeping citations in the lede: [1]

A barnstar for you!

OK, I hope you're happy with your work, I think it's fabulous! And I'm also glad that we could (resolve? set aside? put on hiatus?) our differences elsewhere and that it led to this accomplishment of yours. Cheers! β alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 19:11, 12 April 2014 (UTC) |
- Thank you, Alf. It means a great deal more to me coming from you. I don't even consider our differences as anything to set aside, much less consider. I learned a great deal from the experience, and thank you kindly. Now then, is the article still supposed to be in my sandbox, or did I screw-up yet again? Atsmeβ―Consult 19:17, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
- No, it's normal that it's still in your sandbox. When you move a page out of userspace into mainspace that just happens. You can blank the sandbox version and it won't affect the real version, and then use your sandbox for other stuff. Would you be interested in trying to write a DYK (WP:DYK) from your new article? It'll get it on the main page for a few hours. That process can be a little overwhelming, I know, but if you'd like to try I can help you, or if you'd like it to happen but don't want to get involved, I can do it for you (which is normal, other people proposing DYKs for new articles).β alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 19:23, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
- I'd love to do something new. If you have the patience to work with me, I'm game. Also, I noticed in the "view history" of my new article, it shows all the edits. Uh oh? Or is that normal? You might want to take a peek at it. Atsmeβ―Consult 19:26, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
- It's supposed to show the history, don't worry about that. I'll think about what might be a good hook, and maybe you can read over the instructions at the DYK page. I believe you have 5 days or 10 days or something from when it's moved into mainspace, so it's not a super hurry.β alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 19:28, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
- You can take the lead, and just coach me along so I can see first hand how it's done. Is that ok? Atsmeβ―Consult 19:33, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

I did the DYK nomination
It's here: Template:Did you know nominations/Gabor B. Raczβ. You might want to put it on your watchlist because it's sometimes necessary to do a little editing before it's accepted, but in this case I think that'll be minimal. By the way, you should be quite proud of the minimal attention the article got from new page patrollers. You probably didn't realize it, but those two or three small edits people made right after you moved it were just the tip of the iceberg of probably around a hundred people looking it over to make sure it wasn't too crappy to survive, and then it got assessed with a C by the bio wikiproject. Very good!β alf laylah wa laylah (talk) 22:10, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Also you can just look at other people's userpages who do DYKs and see what they do. I'd like to thank you for drawing my attention to the larger pattern of what's going on at ArbCom. I think there are some editors who want to make others afraid to speak up, and remembered some unpleasantries recently and well, I see you have gotten various blocks. - Thx, Jusdafax. I am currently working on a "Free Pick-Up (at the train station)" Award to go with some of my other humorous banners to keep things from getting too serious. I still don't know exactly what I did that was so terribly wrong it deserved a block because there was no evidence (diffs) provided to support any of the claims. It appears I angered some in the same group of editors who openly hate my creation of AVDUCK. Maybe if they had provided at least one diff supporting their claims, we would know for certain, but all I got were tons of aspersions. I did admit that I should have responded kinder to being railroaded at ANI which led to the block, and I did learn something from it all. (forgot to add) My apologies to those I apologized to were sincere because in retrospect, I do realize I should have responded to the allegations differently, but please forgive me for believing the punishment did not fit the crime. Sadly, some editors have come at me with preconceived notions, but at the same time, others have been absolute sweethearts, including a few who supported the block. I have not faltered in my belief that truth will prevail, and I hope it will reveal itself sooner than later. Atsmeππ§ 19:08, 11 September 2015 (UTC) add-on 20:32, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

Jusdafax, regarding the blocks on my block log which you mentioned above (and I'm just now responding to).....
- shouldn't even be there. I was wrongfully accused of posting personal info (outing). The block should have been redacted from the log. I spent nearly 12 hrs. pleading innocent before the block was removed with the following explanation: (OK, not copied from email replies, available on-wiki).
- edit warring - I was a newbie, but ignorance of the law is no excuse and we were both blocked. It appears to me that since I didn't have tenure or protection or whatever, I had to sit out my 36 hr. block while his was expeditiously removed despite his incivility. - Hi, Ellanorani - it was my pleasure to help. The article has good general information and it's quite informative which is what we expect to see in encyclopedic articles. The images are an enhancement and help to keep readers reading. I tend to work a little slower than most when preparing articles for GA or FA because I like to walk away from it for a day or two, and then come back and see it with fresh eyes. I'd like to work on copyediting next - tighten the prose - and then review it again and try for a little better balance with the image layout. Once that's done, I'll nominate it and we can collaborate to address any issues the reviewer may find. Thank you for touching base with me. It is much appreciated. Sure glad I don't edit ^^^those^^^ articles. But thank you for letting me know, L235. I understand it was procedure because I'm on the "involved" list. Where's the pull-down menu with a tag for it's complicated"? Atsmeππ§ 18:51, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
FAC of Schmerber v. California
Hi Atsme, I hope all is well these days! I have nominated an article I wrote, Schmerber v. California, for FA status. In light of your invaluable contributions to United States v. Washington during that article's FA review, I was wondering if you would be willing to take a look at the nomination for Schmerber? Here is a link to the nomination. Thanks in advance for your help! Best, -- Notecardforfree (talk) 17:23, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)Along those same lines, you both might want to participate in the discussion of Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/United States v. Washington.Minor4th 17:27, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

Your input is requested
Your input is requested at Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2015 October 2#File:Up Out My Face Screenshot.png. In particular, is there a reason that a local copy of this image needs to be kept when the image exists on the Wikimedia Commons? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 04:38, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
