Characters disallowed in filenames
Do we have a complete list of characters that MediaWiki disallows from inclusion in filenames? When uploading some files at Commons, I surprised myself by discovering that slashes are disallowed in filenames (apparently filespace can have subpages), and unfortunately I can't find (either here or there) a list of characters that can't appear in filenames. Wikipedia:Naming conventions (technical restrictions) isn't particularly helpful, because it's just addressing articles, which among other things can include slashes in filenames because articles can't have subpages. I don't care about restrictions imposed by title blacklists, since I'm an admin here and at Commons and therefore can override blacklists if there's some good reason for so doing. Nyttend (talk) 13:42, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- PS, see what happens when you add a slash at upload — I tried to upload a file as File:Ashland O/H jurisdictions without photos.png, and the software automatically put it at File:H jurisdictions without photos.png. This is, unfortunately, different from adding other illegal characters at upload; [[:File:Ashland [OH jurisdictions without photos.png]] became File:Ashland -OH jurisdictions without photos.png. Nyttend (talk) 13:45, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- PPS, it's "automatically" only because I told it to ignore warnings. When you don't ignore warnings with a slashed filename, it only says Filename has been changed to [name] and truncates it to whatever comes after the slash. Same thing with the bracket, except that it gives the entire filename with the bracket replaced with the hyphen. Nyttend (talk) 13:51, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
I don't remember where exactly I got this list from at the time, but when I wrote the file upload wizard, I ended up using the following list of disallowed characters: # (hash sign), < > (angle brackets), [ ] (square brackets), | (pipe), { } (braces), / (slash). Fut.Perf. ☼ 14:35, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- That's Wikipedia:Naming conventions (technical restrictions)#Forbidden characters plus slash. I don't know any characters which are only disallowed in file names. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:21, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

question about coordinates
I've added coordinates to Fort San Carlos but they don't display like I expect them to - they are left-justified instead of right-justified, and the symbol before the coordinates is not shown. Hi. A sentence in this article reads: was the foremost "global" power. But that doesn't sound right. Not to mention, All articles, references, etc.. regarding the British Empire in and outside of Wikipedia refer to it as a "world power" not "global power". Do I have permission? Is this change correct and allowed? Agree? Disagree? It's just a small wording. (N0n3up (talk) 17:51, 1 November 2015 (UTC))
- The reference given for the sentence to which you refer is a book entitled "Empire: the rise and demise of the British world order and the lessons for global power". --David Biddulph (talk) 18:26, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

- David Biddulph True, but it talks of "global power" as a lesson for global dominance, but as a title, most call it a "world power" as it's often described, here's just two which I can add [3], [4]. (N0n3up (talk) 18:53, 1 November 2015 (UTC))

- David Biddulph Not to mention, you'll see there is more articles on world than there is on global. (N0n3up (talk) 00:56, 2 November 2015 (UTC))

Help getting rid of the bloody red 5,000,000 article banner
Okay, yes, hurrah! WP has reached an artificial round number of articles. That blood-red banner is jarring, and not something I want to see when I open a new WP page. Is there some user setting or hack that will allow me to get rid of it? I use monobook skin. Thanks. μηδείς (talk) 18:45, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

- This encyclopedia uses English. There are links on the left side of every page to various other languages that have an article by that name in that particular language. If you're wondering about whether we use American English or British English, the answer is that we use both. See WP:ENGVAR for more. Dismas|(talk) 20:15, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

- I wonder if the OP has been reading an article about some country or region, and wants to know what language is spoken there. Maproom (talk) 20:42, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- In any case, Wikipedia is not a travel guide. Our reason for including such information would be because there is some intrinsic encyclopedic value for that article, not because someone is expecting Wikipedia to be something it is not.-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 20:44, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Nick Drahos: Re Job history presented to Wikipedia Oct 30,2015
My name is Nick Drahos, a former Cornell U.Football All-America player. I submitted my job history to you and find that it has been rejected as inaccurate despite the fact that I have referenced a publication from which it has been taken. I would like to know why it has been rejected.
In you Synopsis of revisions you will note that I did many revisions, This was because I had trouble figuring out your format and spacing. For your info, you can eliminate all the former revisions from your synopsis, keeping only the one with the highest character count written Oct 30, 2015.

Prevent autoconfirmation?
I have been testing some technical aspects of logging on and editing various foreign-language wikipedia projects under various circumstances.
To test what a brand new non-autoconfirmed logged-in user sees I created a test account (User:TestAccountZboxx3R7ql001, if anyone wants to double check my Evil Sockpuppeting Activities -- make sure you check on all projects,[7] so you don't miss any Evil...)
Is it possible to somehow prevent that account from being autoconfirmed?
Or would it be safe to assume that no Wikipedia project behaves differently for a non-autoconfirmed logged-in user as opposed to a not-logged-in IP user? If I know that the two cases act the same I can just test without logging in. Putting "Guy Macon testing without logging in" in the edit summary would make it clear who to blame for my Evil Sockpuppeting Activities. --Guy Macon (talk) 22:48, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- Autoconfirmation cannot be removed. If you want to experiment further then you must create a third account and make less than 10 edits with it. Some things are different for IP's and new users. For example, IP's don't have preferences and can only create pages in the draft and talk namespaces. See more at Wikipedia:User access levels#New users. Some things vary per wiki. For example, the English Wikipedia does not offer VisualEditor to IP's. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:27, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Waterskiing or Water Skiing: one word or two?
Waterskiing is the article title but waterskiing and water skiing are used interchangably throughout the article, and the predominant usage is as two words. Which is it? Czoal (talk) 01:05, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- The title is inconsistent with the lede sentence. That is undesirable. I will be renaming the article, which will retain the one-word form as a redirect. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:14, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, but how about the other inconistencies in the article: waterski vs. water ski, and waterskier vs. water skier? They are also used interchangably. And how about Category:Waterskiing? Also, Queenie (waterskiing elephant). Finally, I see United States Waterskiing Team, which has no sourcing to prove it even exists; I did a quick search and found nothing. Is it a hoax article? It's the article creator's only edit. Czoal (talk) 02:40, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Help
- I am being asked a number of pressing questions by User:Widefox and request assistance. Huskers110110 (talk) 02:28, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
For the convenience of editors, these are the articles at the heart of the dispute: Virginia Tech National Capital Region, Virginia Tech Richmond Center, and Virginia Tech Roanoke Center. All of them were recently created by Huskers110110. Czoal (talk) 05:41, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
-
- Just my two cents. I think you should continue talking to Widefox. The concerns about all the articles you have created about various Virginia Tech entities appear to be legitimate. From a quick glance, the articles read as advertsing - even with prices included, like here in Virginia Tech National Capital Region - and all of them are relying completely on Virginia Tech- or Virginia Tech-related websites for its sourcing. I don't see any secondary sources. There are also copyright violations; you cannot copy and paste content from a source. It looks like you've put in a lot of time and effort into these articles. But are you being paid to write them? Or do you have some other type of conflict of interest? Do you edit, or have you edited, under other accounts? Czoal (talk) 03:15, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Huskers110110: part of the reason User:Widefox may appear to be "pressing" for answers is that you clearly appear to be avoiding giving direct answers to simple questions. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:31, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- I've got 5 help notifications mentioning me in different pages, rather than a simple answer to what's going on. I was even willing to let others discuss these issues but Help suggested continuing dialogue with me, so I did. Seems WP:BOOMERANG, and either a desperate new editor needing help or arguably WP:FORUMSHOPPING. For a new editor, their level of proficiency is impressive, so the question about other accounts seems pertinent. Another editor has undercovered copyvios in these articles so there's more urgent issues too. Widefox; talk 12:45, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Mobile chevrons
When a page first loads, all the chevrons point upwards but the content is collapsed. When a section is then opened, the cheuron still points upward. Only when the section is then collapsed again does the chevron point upwards. Copyright: International Association of Commissioning Engineers, Vision and Mission
I have just submitted an article for wiki and it has been rejected and removed, the reason being that it "used copyright material", but it is my copyright and the website it directed me to show I had "copied" the material is my website? As I wrote both it is very similar. Please help how can I re-submit the material? Paul Spice — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.36.247.208 (talk) 14:06, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- The easy way is to change the attribution on your webpage to make the material public domain so it can then be used freely by anybody including wikipedia. Also note that you should not really be adding stuff from your own website to wikipedia as you probably have a conflict of interest, have a read of WP:COI. MilborneOne (talk) 17:31, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- Aside from the problems with COI and copyright, it is usually better to summarize the purpose of the organization in neutral uninvolved terms, based on what other independent sources have reported about it. The organization's self-published "vision" or "mission" has little or no relevance in an encyclopedic article. GermanJoe (talk) 18:42, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- For a subject to have a Wikipedia article it needs to have had significant coverage in published reliable sources independent of the subject. I have looked for coverage in newspapers, journals, etc., but without success so far, so it may be that your organisation is not notable in Wikipedia's terms. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:58, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, Paul. It is rarely appropriate to copy material from an organisation's own website, because Wikipedia has almost no interest in what an organisation (or a person, band, company, school or anything) says about themselves. It is only interested in what others, unconnected with the subject, have published about the subject. --ColinFine (talk) 21:03, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

- Many thanks both. Tiggerjay got what I wanted, so that when the page gets changed in the future the link will show it as it was. Mjroots (talk) 18:26, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- Yes that's what I tried to do, but I still find you description confusing. Note that you don't do anything to the URL. Rather you archive the page (if necessary) and then add the archive URL to the citation. The original URL should generally not be removed, as it makes the references confusing. Particularly in cases where you use a service like Webcitation with generally* non transparent archive URLs, where it loses information (if the archive URL is broken, finding another copy may be difficult or impossible since you don't know the original URL). So there is no, or should be no "magic" performed on the original URL. The "magic" is seperate from the original URL. (Unless you count archiving the URL as magic, but that's equally confusing since technically the "magic" is actually on the content at the URL, not on the URL itself.) In future, it may be better to simply ask someone to add an archive URL, or if you feel the need to specify the service, and archive URL at whatever service you prefer; to avoid such confusion. * = webcitation does support transparent archive URLs but they aren't the primary recommendation Nil Einne (talk) 16:00, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi, my name is SireWonton. Why is my account not autoconfirmed? My account is more than two weeks old and I have made more than 10 edits; however, I'm not autoconfirmed yet. Can someone help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SireWonton (talk • contribs) 18:49, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
- What makes you think that you're not autoconfirmed? --David Biddulph (talk) 19:02, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
- You appear to meet the criteria as auto-confirmed, however know that it is a pseudo-group and not a specific permission you would see listed or associated with your username. If you're encountering problems editing while logged in, please share those problems. Otherwise you should be all set. You can read a bit more about it over at WP:CONFIRM. Well, why can't I deit semi-protected pages? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SireWonton (talk • contribs) 23:10, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- I have copied this here from the archives given the update above, although I'm not sure if people can offer much help, since the OP hasn't provided any more info as was suggested here Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous#Can't edit semi-protected pages. - In general, you can simply remove such unsourced allegations (especially in WP:BLP articles about living persons) yourself. But I have also trimmed a few positive details, which weren't covered by a reliable source. Ideally all non-trivial statements, both positive and negative, should be sourced. Roger Bart
Trisha paytas recently made up lies and accusations as she's done in the past to get her name in the headlines. Roger Bart's wiki now says cheater as an occupation. It's ridiculous that anyone can make up lies and it's automatically just put into print. This is grounds for slander. It should be removed now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.3.198.76 (talk) 22:16, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Copyright of maps I create from paintmaps.com
Can I share maps I create at http://paintmaps.com/ under a free license? I'd assume using such a website is no different from using a graphic editing program like PhotoShop which doesn't add its own copyright, but want to double check, since it does offer templates...? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 22:58, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Eustace Folville Article; As Artistic as Factual
Eustace Folville and his Folville Gang have become known as a sort of Robin Hood and his merry men group. His wiki article reflects this and, although there are refs, it contains a very high degree of opinion and artistic license, i.e. it is not very fact based. It really needs the bias and drama to be weeded out to be a decent encyclopaedic article but that would mean trimming it back significantly. What would be the best way to do this? If you were to just add a load of [citation needed] and [dubious ] tags they would probably just sit there for an eternity... Thanks Sliven2000 (talk) 23:11, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

- Thanks guys. I actually decided to create a new article that is related to the Folville/Zouch/Beler/Willoughby affair and leads into it (see William Trussell). When you start linking the different actors involved in an incident you start to get a clearer view of what happened and why. Think I will still a) move some of the Folville family info into Eustace's father John Folville, b) add a background section to Eustace Folville to give an idea of events leading up to the Beler murder c) cut down some of the remaining vagaries/opinions Sliven2000 (talk) 16:44, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

- Done
- Meramacsharks, I fixed the date in the Washington Post citation in the Alexander Ovechkin article. {{cite news}} and the other cite templates do not support the format MM/DD/YYYY, because it is ambiguous. The only all-numeric format supported is YYYY-MM-DD. Another time, please provide a link to the article you are asking for help with, and sign your edit with four tildes (

). It makes it much easier for a responding volunteer. Thank you. DES (talk) 05:34, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
IPblock-exempt?
I notice that there is a such thing an IPblock-EXEMPT status. How does one get such a status. I am spending a lot of time in libraries again and would like to pursue such and exemption.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:21, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
- As noted at Wikipedia:IP block exemption, it is ONLY granted in cases where there is demonstrated need, and often removed when the need has passed. "Demonstrated need" in this case is that you are currently blocked by a hard block (no editing with accounts or IPs) from an IP address or IP Range where you are editing. It is unlikely you will be editing from an IP address which has been hardblocked. If you are, you'll know, because your inability to edit articles will tell you that. Unless and until you find yourself in that situation, it is unlikely that IP Block Exemption status would be granted. --Jayron32 04:29, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
- I now realize that I am listed at Special:ListUsers/ipblock-exempt, but that I got blocked at a Chicago Public Library IP address about a week or two ago. What gives?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 23:56, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

high risk merchant account
Hello, My article on High risk merchant account is removed no matter how many times I revise it. There is a huge importance for merchants to know the difference between a merchant account and a high risk merchant account. We have been in the industry for 10 years and everyday we deal with educating people on the differences. I wanted to create a qiki page that explained this. In short, just so you can understand. Typical banks like " Chase bank, Bank of America, wells fargo, ect" will only set up merchant accounts for retial stores that "physically can touch" a persons credit/debit card. Places like, dry cleaners, clothing stores, restaurants, jewelry, ect. They WILL NOT set up merchant accounts for industries such as: Call centers, Diet Pills online, MLM, Hotel discount websites, Coupon sites, Debt collection agencies, credit repair agencies, tech support companies, ect. These companies need a "high risk merchant account" because all of their customers are not face to face with the merchant and there is a higher probability for chargebacks or stolen credit cards. Their rates will be higher and there will be more rules and regulations with these "high risk merchant accounts" That being said, I really would like to create the page to educate the public on the vast differences but it seems that due to the lack of awareness of wiki editors they think it is advertising, so if you could help me better understand I would really appreciate it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bmp17 (talk • contribs) 14:22, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Bmp17: we are an encyclopedia, not a "how to" nor a place to "warn" unwary merchants -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:43, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
It is actually still located at High Risk Merchant Accountit just doesn't cite any sources as to why high risk merchant accounts are notable or verifable. Including those will greatly increase the odds of the articles survival. uhhlive (talk) 14:48, 3 November 2015 (UTC)- Aaaaaaand....its gone. If you want to rewrite it, I would highly recommend reading this page on writing your first article and following the style and guidelines there. uhhlive (talk) 16:10, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Wikimedia projects
I was looking at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions when I noticed at the top an invitation to take part in a survey on harassment. The first question in the survey was about how often I take part in "Wikimedia projects". I have no idea what these are, so I tried to find out, failed, and abandoned the survey. Is this Help Desk a "Wikimedia project"? How about "Wikipedia:Graphics_Lab", or Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chemistry? If users unfamiliar with this obscure piece of terminology are forced to abandon the survey, there'll be a lot of bias in who can take part. Maproom (talk) 17:27, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
- I tried to find the survey again so as to provide a link, and got this mystifying page. Maproom (talk) 17:35, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
- A Wikimedia project is a wiki-based project run by the Wikimedia Foundation. Everything at wikipedia.org is part of Wikipedia, the best known Wikimedia project. See meta:Harassment survey 2015. meta: is a coordination site for Wikimedia projects. I haven't sen the survey and think it's only presented to a small part of the visitors of Wikimedia projects. The questions are apparently not published until after the survey is over. Based on your post I guess some or all of the questions are not specific to the project the user saw the survey at. You can post feedback at meta:Talk:Harassment survey 2015. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:55, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
- The bottom of your contributions page has a link on "accounts" to meta:Special:CentralAuth/Maproom. This shows which Wikimedia wikis your account is registered at (currently 131 including language editions), and how many edits you have there. If you view a page at a wiki while you are logged in at another wiki then your account is automatically registered, so the list may include wikis you don't remember. The Victims Perth Band, rebuttal on character assassination by David Faulkner & James Baker.
For starters, I was never ever informed to any re releases via 1977 Records Japan, if I was asked I would have declined, because the music at best is moderate to say the least, in fact it sucks, I had let past releases through but again, was never ever consulted if my mechanical rights could be used. The LIVE album, I would NEVER have allowed to go ahead, due to the simple fact its embarrassing for me to listen to what is no more than utter rubbish, out of tune out of time and in general, bad all round.
David Faulkner & James Baker have never ever sought my permission, never called me not texted me via Facebook, in which I am freely available, so for your article to state they disagreed with me is wrong.
I declined on the release of the song "High School Girls" to be used in the movie for the "MULE" because I felt it totally inappropriate a 56 year old man allowing a song about picking up high school girls, especially in a climate were pedophilia is rife.
I would like you to advise me on what in your opinions would be the best forum to contact to settle matters once & for all? as I am sick to death of hearing liable statements from both David Faulkner and James Baker? Finally, I am seeking legal advise toward the consistent liable comments from the two parties concerned. I have taken measures so that no re releases will ever come out again for the next 99 years. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.151.198.244 (talk) 19:43, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

The information about Royal Navy ranks at this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy_officer_rank_insignia is incorrect. For example an OF-4 Navy equivalent is a Commander not Lt Commander and an OF5 is a Captain.

2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season
Hey Guys when will the article for the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS Article come out hopefully in a week or 2. 68.102.61.195 (talk) 23:06, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
- Articles are made and edited by volunteers who choose what to work on. Nobody is assigned specific work so we cannot predict when somebody will make an article. If you click "View history" and then "oldest" on articles from previous years then you can see when they were created, for example 19 December 2014 for 2015 NCAA Division I FBS football season.[8] 2016 may or may not be similar. You can submit an article for review at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:24, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
