Proposed deletion |
On this page, the deletion or merging of templates, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.
How to use this page
What not to propose for discussion here
The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:
- Stub templates
- Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories.
- Userboxes
- Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
- Speedy deletion candidates
- If the template clearly satisfies a "general" or "template" criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if the template is a recreation of a template already deleted by consensus here at Tfd, tag it with {{Db-repost}}. If you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
- Policy or guideline templates
- Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at Tfd separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
- Template redirects
- List at Redirects for discussion.
Reasons to delete a template
- The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance
- The template is redundant to a better-designed template
- The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used
- The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing
Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.
Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.
Listing a template
To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).
I | Tag the template. |
---|---|
Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:
Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the Tfd nomination, add |
|
II | List the template at Tfd. |
Follow to edit today's Tfd log.
Add this text at the top, just below the If the template has had previous Tfds, you can add Use an edit summary such as Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following:
You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the |
|
III | Notify users. |
Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:
to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects (look on the top of the template's talk page) that do not use Article alerts, so that they are aware of the discussion. Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases. |
Consider adding any templates you nominate for Tfd to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the Tfd tag is not removed.
Twinkle
Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the functions of notification automatically. However, at present, it does not notify the creator of the other template in the case of a merger, so this step has to be performed manually. Twinkle also does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.
Discussion
Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.
People will sometimes also recommend subst or Subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it before the template page is deleted.
Templates are rarely orphaned (made to not be in use) before the discussion is closed.

Template:Trisha Paytas
- Template:Trisha Paytas ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
Only three articles in the body that link are all songs that she covered that give no mention of her whatsoever. The pages linked in the header of the template link to three different articles, a discography (which is likely to be merged), a filmography, and a bibliography, all at different sections. Not really notable overall for need of a template. Azealia911 talk 21:10, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Consensus is that we should only create squad templates for major tournaments like the World Cup, Confederations Cup, UEFA Euro, Gold Cup, etc. The Caribbean Cup is not a major tournament. – Michael (talk) 22:38, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Template:Lancashire County Palatine
- Template:Lancashire County Palatine ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
This could be interpreted as a WP:POVFORK, attempting to treat "historic Lancashire" as a separate, parallel entity to "Lancashire", which is against WP:UKCOUNTIES guidelines. The template is somewhat confusing in that it is mixing modern-day elements within the ceremonial county boundaries with elements within the historic county boundaries. And it is cherry-picking Lancashire-related topics to support a particular POV. We already have a {{Lancashire}}
template. There has been a brief discussion about this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK geography § County Palatine of Lancaster. Dr Greg talk 19:50, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Template:Infobox SMS station
- Template:Infobox SMS station ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
- Template:Infobox station ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
Propose merging Template:Infobox SMS station with Template:Infobox station.
The first template seems to be redundant as the second one can be used to represent the same information. It can also be used to improve the representation of the information and also creates a uniformity between different transit systems in South Korea (ie with Korail stations and metro systems in other cities) and overall globally, thus makes it easier for readers to track information down. Examples as such can be seen in the following links:

Template:Xfce and Template:LXDE
- Template:Xfce ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
- Template:LXDE ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
Also brought up at Template talk:Xfce, Template talk:LXDE, these two templates doesn't seem on navbox purpose and listing would be more appropriate IMO. Otherwise we should create navbox for Gnome, KDE and every DE available Category:Desktop environments and why we limit to DEs? So it would be possible to make such thing for distros using systemd or udev or other low level or high level software which leads to a mess. –ebraminiotalk 17:13, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
- Delete The reasons for the nomination. ویرایشگر-1 (talk) 19:29, 5 July 2015 (UTC)ps that
- Keep This nav box provides a much neater and more concise means of listing distros that offer this desktop, as described on the talk page. It also allows the use of this nav box on the listed distros pages, thus allowing readers to find similar distros that offer this desktop. A list on the article page would not offer this functionality. The fact that other non-existent nav boxes could be created but haven't, is not relevant to this discussion. The nominator has not indicated any Wikipedia policy that this nav box offends and so this nom is nothing more than WP:IDONTLIKEIT. - Ahunt (talk) 02:25, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- Good point. WP:NAVBOX, 2 (not *every*, Arch Linux and there are other ones), 3 (it is about what level of the relation you see this should be, if you see distros offering X DE need a navbox, relatively big amount of each page will be occupied with navboxes. If the template was about distros offering X DE as default DE it could make more sense on this case and for 5) and 5 (which is not, linking FreeBSD to Arch Linux was unlikely just because they both offering X DE) and also WP:OR, is X DE community level provided (like AUR or FreeBSD Ports) or is also supported by distro maintainers or the package developers? You may know that but I don't know and this as its sensitively needs to WP:VERIFY-able which easily can be done on a list WP:AOAL if someone mark the part for being {{citation needed}}. –ebraminiotalk 10:23, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

- Comment: I think the idea that just because we have nav boxes on distros that offer LXDE and Xfce that we have to therefore have nav boxes on distros that offer every other desktop is fundamentally a fallacious argument. No where does Wikipedia policy require that if we have "X" navbox, we have to therefore also have "Y" nav box. The number of distros that offer LXDE and Xfce are quite limited and so this makes these particularly well adapted to this sort of small nav box. Are the boxes complete at present? Probably not, but a lack of them being complete is not a valid reason to delete them. Which distros to include or exclude from the nav box should be sorted out on the template talk page, not in a deletion discussion. - Ahunt (talk) 12:51, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- And you seem doing straw man fallacy by commenting just about one of the reasons mentioned. –ebraminiotalk 15:01, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- Comment: It is hardly a "straw man" argument when you listed it as one of the reasons you nominated the templates for deletion. Because you did so, it requires addressing. You put forward a hypothetical problem of requiring other more cumbersome boxes based on these two, but those boxes have not been created, let alone nominated for deletion and thus not up for discussion here. - Ahunt (talk) 23:43, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Overkill; we don't need custom headers per service. The parameters are redundant to {{Infobox station}}'s |name=
, |native_name=
, |code=
and |lines=
. Alakzi (talk) 18:52, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- Comment. That raises a broader question: Infobox station supports a style parameter, which enables similar functionality without a separate template (see e.g. Smithtown (LIRR station) and Poughkeepsie (Metro-North station). The headers were needed for more complicated use cases, and at least in the case of the CTA were originally implemented in 2006-2007 or so when the manual templates were converted to Infoboxes. If styling is going, then it all needs to go. If not, then these templates should be kept. Strictly speaking we don't need anything, but absent any other rationale I sort of like them. Mackensen (talk) 19:08, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- For the case of Korail and SMS, this is a nice way of showing the concept of station numbers. No other way can do that in my opinion. The name shields and their uniqueness is also comparable to road number shields and rectangular boxes. It's one of the features distinguishing different systems from each other. Nima Farid (talk) 20:31, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep. The Athenian name plates are as unique as road numbers. Without them there would be no distinction to which transit system it belongs, since there is also a Victoria station in many other countries. --Marianian(talk) 20:37, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- There are several issues with these, including the loss of the name metadata, tables for layout, which is a big accessibility no-no, WP:COLOR violations, the utterly unappealing design - with the exception of CTA - and the maintenance burden they incur on template editors.
I'm not going to fix any of these issues, and it is probably safe to assume that you don't know how. If it can't be done with|style=
, then it probably shouldn't be done at all. Alakzi (talk) 21:21, 14 July 2015 (UTC) - Delete per Alakzi's reasoning. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:34, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- As someone who deals with the CTA pages, I have to say keep, unless some kind of an alternative can be devised which produces the same result without adding a tome's worth of style information to each infobox. Lost on Belmont 3200N1000W (talk) 01:37, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- Are you !voting to keep all of them or just CTA? Alakzi (talk) 01:46, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- Picking and choosing individuals would work against the move toward simplicity and uniformity, both of which I support. My vote is to keep all unless (or until) some kind of an alternative can be devised which produces the same result without adding a tome's worth of style information to each infobox. - (a) Yes, it is redundant, irrespective of any "movement"; it's performs the exact same function as the other two templates. (b) The movement must've got long claws, because their aim is - in fact - part of the MOS. (c) Did you think that said movement's adherents would care what the template is called? Alakzi (talk) 17:02, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
Comment Thank you for interested in this template. It was originally created to resolve the issue of too long captions on an article "Mandolin" (see an example; this issue was discussed on the talk page), although I didn't yet reflect it on the article due to the several reasons; a major reason is that all templates using css class "collapsibleCollapsedTH" (including {{Hidden}} (protected), {{Collapse}} (semi-protected), and the current version of {{Read more}} (editable)) are not workable on the mobile view. (cf. desktop view)
I think this issue (unsupport of mobile view) should be resolved with more simple way such as css selector :target or similar technique, instead of jQuery-based implementation currently used. However I don't know how to propose it on the Wikipedia jungle, thus the improvement of this template have been temporally pending. If you want to delete this template, probably it may be rational. However, this template may be later re-created with a more sophisticated code & behavior. thanks, --Clusternote (talk) 19:30, 13 July 2015 (UTC), [improved major reason]--Clusternote (talk) 04:34, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

- Keep, because other similar templates ({{Hidden}}, and {{Collapse}} families) are hard to improve the behavior on the Mobile View pages (because jQuery used on these templates is intentionally filtered on Mobile frontend). I don't personally see the need for this. - Delete. An activist organisation is formed and goes on to protest events that it opposes. Why is its involvement so profoundly related to the events themselves that we need a navbox to go from one to the next? This organisation's protests are irrelevant to the events discussed in the linked articles; there's no way that this navbox is helpful. Nyttend (talk) 03:44, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Newly created, yet redundant to {{Infobox person}} (which it replaced here, and here, for instance) or {{Infobox officeholder}}. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:33, 4 July 2015 (UTC) Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:33, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
- No : As the creator of the template, I oppose the deletion of the above template. I agree that some of the stuffs are from {{Infobox person}} and {{Infobox officeholder}} are placed in this template at this moment, but it can cover most of the details of a communist leader (like even if it is not from politically active party, but still quite popular). This template can be treated as a part of {{Infobox person}}, just like others are there... like {{Infobox dancer}}, {{Infobox fashion designer}}, {{Infobox chef}} and so on. This template has a scope of improvement in the future, that I am likely to improve. This is not totally redundant template, but quite a useful one. Logical1004 (talk) 21:54, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
- What parameters are unique to communist leaders? Alakzi (talk) 22:03, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
- First of all, the template is using some parameters of {{Infobox officeholder}}, that can be edited and introduced as a part of module in the current template. In this way it will reduce the current template size and redundancy. Second, the current template can be treated as a sub-part of {{Infobox person}} as other similar templates, as I have said earlier too. Third, regarding uniqueness to communist leaders, there is a large info of communist movements/ideologies/line of thought and that can be accommodated in an infobox, as the idea of the whole infobox is to present the summary of some unifying aspect that the articles share and sometimes to improve navigation to other interrelated articles. So keeping a separate template for that purpose will help. Logical1004 (talk) 09:45, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Template:Indian Toppers
- Template:Indian Toppers ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
A navigation template with 11 links of which 10 are redlinks is not particularly useful. The template was created almost four months ago, but no attempt has been made to create any of the redlinked articles (the existing article was created several years ago). All the redlinked articles are lists, and I don't know whether they are all sufficiently notable to have an article. Some of them probably are, but again, the articles don't exist yet so linking to them in a template is pretty premature. Note that "topper" is a word that is used in Indian English to refer to a student who ranks first in their class or school - its use is well attested and it's not slang, merely a regional term. bonadea contributions talk 10:53, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
- Delete. A list of special class railway apprentice toppers and entrance exam toppers? I strongly doubt that most of these will warrant articles — not on resource-availability or systemic bias grounds, but on encyclopedic grounds. Let's say the term's in common use in the USA; I still can't imagine articles for "List of Foreign Service Officer Examination Toppers" or "List of SAT Toppers", for example. - That's senseless. There are only two subreferences inside this template, that hardly qualifies as enough referencing complexity to justify this, and standard template usage handles this anyways, since this is a single article template and is not used with other topics. - Template:Latin intro ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
The contents here should be subtituted into each page and the template deleted. The template guidelines suggest that templates should not normally be used to store article text and this is largely article text at the start of each page. Locking it into a template prevents any customizing of the text (which is why it's not used at List of Latin phrases (full)), adds unnecessary difficulty to the page and (ignoring WP:BEANS) given that this template isn't protected, opens up an additional angle for vandalism. This is for discussion following substitution but the box itself may not need to inserted into every page (like it at List of Latin phrases (full)) given that every page also has Template:Latin phrases as a footer. Ricky81682 (talk) 04:25, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep. These pages should have similar intros, because the situation's identical for all of them. If we identify a problem with any of them, we'll have identified a problem with all of them; it would be a waste of time to have to edit twenty pages when a single template edit could fix everything. Nyttend (talk) 03:37, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep. Normally I support the deletion of boilerplate text-type templates. But this is different: all articles in the series "List of Latin phrases" appear to require the exact same header and lead, so it makes sense to store that introduction in a template. If there were only two or three articles in the series, I would have said "delete", but with twenty pages, it makes good sense to standardise this boilerplate in the form of a template. — This, that and the other (talk) 13:17, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep. There is no reason to display anything different on the 20 letters. If we want to consistently display the same on 20 articles then a template is well-suited. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:09, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

- Why did you create a whole string of templates without discussion with others? You are aware how many articles are affected as a result of your unilateral decisions?Huaiwei (talk) 05:22, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Question: Why are we creating flag icon templates that are specific to the Southeast Asian Games -- are these not completely redundant/duplicative of generic flag icon templates that do exactly the same thing? I think we need to notify Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template of this discussion. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 16:04, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- @Dirtlawyer1: It doesn't seem entirely redundant as they're designed to simplify linking to the "country at games" article set. The forebears Template:FlagIOCathlete/Template:FlagIOCmedalist don't provide that functionality for other games; see for example Template:FlagCGFmedalist for linking to Commonwealth Games team articles. Template:FlagIOC2medalist seems to allow a broader function which may overlap with the above ones
- We need to balance desire for a combined functionality for each games while avoiding the need to pipe in the games edition 50+ times on the same page for the template. Given that the results pages that these are used on tend to have a common format (e.g. Swimming at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Men's 4 × 100 metre medley relay), I think we might be able to achieve decent results by string functions on the page title. If we remove the title elements preceding the "at the" and anything after "–" then we can automatically know the year and the games of the intended link, while still allowing manual input of those bits of data if given in a parameter. I've started a basic template to fulfil this function at {{FlagGamesMedalist}}. This could probably supersede some other templates too, like Template:FlagATHCHathlete. SFB 18:17, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- I thought about doing something similar a little while ago, but another issue is with using the IOC code to produce an older flag or country name. Templates in the {{Country name IOC alias}} series expect the games to be part of the second positional parameter; we'd have to modify all 200-odd of those templates to extract the date and set up year ranges. The whole series needs to be Luafied - and the sooner, the better. Alakzi (talk) 18:32, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

- Template:Peggy Carter ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
This template is centered on a minor character who is a recurring supporting/cameo character in the MCU movies and has her own mini-series, but is a minor and borderline obscure character in the comics continuity and any other media outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All entries on the template have no relevance or connection to the character outside of the MCU mini series. If Phil Coulson, Nick Fury or Agents of SHIELD don't get to have a template to their name, then neither should this character. Haleth (talk) 16:45, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep it navigates 5 articles: Peggy Carter, Agent Carter (film), Agent Carter (TV series), Agent Carter (season 1), List of Agent Carter characters; I would remove all other links though. I would also merge {{Agent Carter episodes}} into this template. -- 67.70.32.20 (talk) 05:21, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep I suggest Haleth withdraw this nomination come up with a new rationalle. "Other Stuff Exists" is a poor argument to be making for deleting a template. While I concur with 67IP that we probably should merge the Agent Carter Episodes template in, that's not germane to the topic. Further your equivilance only holds for Phil Coulson (Appeared in a short, at least one movie, and is primariy on a TV series). Fury guest stars in movies occasionally and the Agents series from time to time. Also note that there's a pseudo-template on Agents_of_S.H.I.E.L.D. that contains several sub-templates which is why it makes sense to not have a Phil Coulson template because the show isn't about him, it's about the ensemble of the team. Further I suggest that Haleth read WP:NAVBOX which gives the rationalle for Navbox templates. Hasteur (talk) 12:17, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

- Delete but save the salt for the herring. What dark times we live in when even an honest shrubber must agree that a joke has aged too much, much like unsalted herring, which is simply of no use in chopping down a tree as my sister once told me before a moose bit her.... 24.151.10.165 (talk) 17:07, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- This argument has been identified by one or more editors as constituting a humorless exercise in bureaucracy. Please resolve this by clarifying the basis for the objection in canonical common sense. Expanding the requirement to include chopping down the longest thread on ANI WITH A HERRING may be met with additional obscure cultural references that surely no one with an Internet connection has ever heard of before. Template:Inactive userpage blanked
- Template:Inactive userpage blanked ( · talk · history · links · logs · subpages · delete)
I wonder if this template reflects current consensus. Other than a singular one-line mention to "Consider replacing the content with {{Inactive userpage blanked}}" at Wikipedia:User pages#Recommended solutions, there is no other mention of how it fits policy-wise. The other templates (Template:Courtesy blanked, Template:Intentionally blank, and Template:Discussion blanked) relate to discussions about content not actual allege content itself (we don't blank articles that don't pass AFD, we delete them). While this prevents indexing, the concern behind WP:NOTHOSTING is not just the fact that the content can be indexed but that the content is just not wanted here. The template itself is supposedly only for userpages which I consider the main page of an editor not "Old drafting pages" which is where it's mentioned and more likely where it's used (that's just a point not a deletion rationale). If it's just the main user page that's problematic, WP:U5 supports deletion not blanking in this manner. Policy also doesn't seem to support indefinitely (even blanked) drafts anymore as newer drafts (using WP:AFC for example) are formulated within draftspace and have fixed time limits to either be edited or reviewed (even those edited but going nowhere show up at MFD something). They all have various amounts of leeway towards restoration if requested which is admittedly more difficult for a new user to figure out than unblanking but (and there's no way to know this) I don't think there's a significant number of editors who come back and somehow know how to pull up the history and get an inactive version if they want but would be too discouraged if they had to go ask someone to restore it for them. Moving articles to mainspace provides finality, MFD provides finality and even movement to draftspace provides finality but this template does not. Also, as I admittedly argue at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion#User:YourBrandRocks.2FRyan Arnold, blanking a page doesn't stop the possibility of unblanking if there's gamesmanship going on and so these article may have to be monitored. There are 158 translucations of this template for reference. Ricky81682 (talk) 09:49, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep but take the issue to the talk page. The template may be helpful so that the user doesn't have to request undeletion just after they come back. WP:U5 may apply in some circumstances but WP:STALEDRAFT very rarely applies. AfC submissions that are abandoned may be deleted as courtesy though, since AfC is not a indefinite host of uncyclopedic content, but drafts that are not part of AfC may simply be kept and blanked as a courtesy. Again, feel free to take to the talk page. --TL22 (talk) 23:09, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep - policy still allows for users to draft materials in their userspace rather than using draftspace or AfC, so this template still has a use in that context. It's a gentler option than simply going all the way and deleting the page. Nikkimaria (talk) 15:29, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

We don't have template that just hard-code text, it makes each article page excessively complicated with little gain. It could be considered a WP:T3 situation. Ricky81682 (talk) 07:53, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
-
- The template in question will be used on 652 pages. Perhaps I structured the page wrong with a template. Is there some better way to do this? But regardless, the pages this template is being used on are already nominated for deletion, so I guess the point is moot. Slevinski (talk) 10:21, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- Why does WP:T3 apply? T3 states Templates that are substantial duplications of another template, or hardcoded instances of another template where the same functionality could be provided by that other template, may be deleted after being tagged for seven days. The text of this template is original. Looking at the MediaWiki manual about templates: If you have standard texts you want to include on several pages, the MediaWiki template feature comes into play. What's the problem? Slevinski (talk) 13:06, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- It's a hard-coded instance of template:ambox with a bunch of other text around it. According to policy, "Templates should not normally be used to store article text". It's possible to support an infobox connecting all the templates but the actual "preamble" (which we don't generally have) for each article should be allowed to be edited and individualized. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:44, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- The template:ambox is to notify interested users that the entire set is being considered for deletion. Originally, the deletion notice was only put on one page, but the deletion is for the whole set of pages. The use of the ambox template was for easy use and formatting. Once the status of the entire set is settled, the ambox template will be removed or the pages will be deleted and the template won't be needed anymore. As it stands, I think the "preamble" template worked as designed because the notice in the preamble was included in over 100 pages without editing the individual pages. If you would rather I rewrite the deletion notice without using the ambox, I can do that.
- The guideline says normally, I believe this is an outside of the normal scope. The "preamble" is not strictly article text, but more in lines with the second guideline: Templates used in articles are designed to provide information to assist readers. The redundant text will need to be updates for all of the pages together. For each individual article, they can still be edited and individualized. The "preamble" can be kept with additional information above or below. Or the "preamble" can be removed from an individual page and rewritten to customize it for any particular page. Slevinski (talk) 21:27, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- If you justify this under "information to assist readers", literally everything falls under that category. Something that wasn't there to assist readers shouldn't be there, template or not. Again, the vast majority of this is just the text and then it an ambox. This entirely thing could be done as actual text on the article pages without the need to hide it within an extra layer of templating which (a) can't be customized if needed and (b) is more difficult for other editors to figure out and edit. There is very gained by having it hidden away on another template (a template that now must be protected and separately watched from the articles themselves) rather than just posting the verbage. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 04:20, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

- The standard footer is currently used on over 100 pages. There are 652 pages it might be used on. While the template is very basic right now, it is set up to expand the footer on each of those pages. Additionally, the exact name of the category might change, as well as the number of categories. Rather than changing each of the 652 pages, this template was created. Slevinski (talk) 13:11, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- It's a template that consists of a single red-linked category. Create the category first and then add the category, there's no need to have a template and then work out what the category could be and what else you want because that prevents anyone else from working on those pages until the template is worked out. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:45, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- The Category:Sutton_SignWriting_Unicode_Sequences does not exist, but the category link lists all of the affected pages. No one is prevented from working on the pages. They can either edit the footer to affect all pages or they can edit a specific page. If anything, the template enables people to edit the linked article because they are much more likely to edit one template than to edit hundreds of individual pages. - Keep. If the articles are deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sutton SignWriting Unicode Sequences for 1D8E4 then the template can be deleted as unused. If the articles are kept then they should be better tied together and a footer template with navigation would be suited for this, so it can be considered a case of {{Coming navbox}} – a rarely used template I created after seeing navboxes being added to tennis articles before the navbox had actually been created. - A footer template could be useful but this is not a footer template, this is a lazy way to add a category to a bunch of article without actually creating and adding the category to the articles. It could be substituted now so that the category is added if that makes it easier and if a footer is designed, then it rightly can be included on all the pages. - delete, navbox creep. Frietjes (talk) 16:56, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep. The main purpose of a navbox is not to give information but to give navigation. {{Pan American Games host cities}} links between the host cities and is only used on those (although it also links the year to the Games edition). {{Pan American Games}} links between various articles about the Games and is only used on those articles. It happens to also mention the host city in the link to that edition of the Games, but the city isn't linked and could be omitted, for example if the navbox grows like {{Olympic Games}} versus {{Olympic Summer Games Host Cities}}. No article transcludes both templates so there is no redundancy in the articles. If we should change something then it is to merge the two templates but I think the city articles are better served by a navbox which explains its presence by saying "host cities" in the heading, and doesn't have additional links to Games articles like sports and medal tables. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:10, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- Delete per Frietjes and my arguments at Wikipedia talk:Categories, lists, and navigation templates § Proposal to extend WP:CATDEF to navigation templates; the Pan American Games are not a defining property of the host cities. Alakzi (talk) 21:18, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
-
- We have many similar navboxes for big multi-sport events: {{Asian Games host cities}}, {{Commonwealth Games Host Cities}}, {{Youth Olympic Games Host Cities}}, {{Olympic Summer Games Host Cities}}, {{Olympic Winter Games Host Cities}}, {{Paralympic Summer Games Host Cities}}, {{Paralympic Winter Games Host Cities}}, {{World Games Host Cities}}, {{All-Africa Games Host Cities}}, {{European Games Host Cities}} (that one looks silly when there is only one city). They are all meant for the cities while another navbox is used on articles about the games. @Sportsfan 1234: Did you intend for the city articles to have no navbox or to use {{Pan American Games}} instead? PrimeHunter (talk) 23:55, 7 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep I agree with Prime Hunter and I don't see a problem with Navigation Box Creep. I'm also concerned that when the navigation box gets deleted that it won't be replaced with the other box that is retained and therefore it will be more difficult to navigate between pages. A similar issue happened with the Category:LGBT Olympians which was deleted, but not every LGBT Olympian has been added to the List that was created.--MorrisIV (talk) 03:07, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep I agree with @PrimeHunter: and @MorrisIV: and I don't see a problem with Navigation Box Creep that. @Sportsfan 1234: I'm also say you won't delete this template. Thanks! Boyconga278 (talk) 20:29, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- Delete - Navbox creep. Per Prime Hunter's comment above, yes, I probably would vote to delete most of the other listed navboxes for games hosts (specifically excluding those for the Olympics), because I do not believe that having hosted the All-Africa Games, European Games, Paralympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, and World Games is a defining characteristic of those cities. Readers are highly unlikely to be jumping from host city to host city via these navboxes, and may already easily navigate among host cities via lists and the Pan American Games articles themselves. Ironically, this Pan Am Games hosts navbox is one of the closer calls, IMO. A navbox for the host cities of the World Games? Epic fail. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:18, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

A mere 1,477 transclusions in 4.8 million articles, in over four years, show that this template has failed to gain traction with the community; and that its presentation is thus non-standard. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:45, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- Keep I fail to see how the 1.5K articles where this is used are harmed by this template, or how a significant portion of the other 4.8 millions would not be improved by it. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 15:46, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- Keep The vast majority of Wikipedia's articles are also Stub and Start class, meaning most articles aren't going to be developed enough to use it. Pretty much all of the FAs I've written use it, meaning it has survived FAC on numerous occasions without any problems. It doesn't violate any policies, so why bother deleting it? Anyway, the template was based on a similar design from frWiki, so it's not completely non-standard. And speaking of non-standard, all the other templates for mentioning Wikiprojects, Portals, etc. typically get placed all over articles in non-standard ways. Some projects put them in infoboxes, while other editors put them in External links or See also or even in the References. In fact, I created this template so that people could standardize. Favoring another style of presentation isn't a reason to delete a template you don't like. – Maky « talk » 16:04, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
- You may have created this template so that people could standardise - and thank you for your contribution - but that effort has clearly failed. FA has no mandate to decide on such matters, and no interest in doing so (besides, most FACs do not use this template). Also, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS applies. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:48, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- Making a point that most FACs don't use this template is also a strawman. Also, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is an "unofficial guidance essay", not a policy or even a guideline. Furthermore, it clearly states that it was written to help resolve notability issues for articles, not templates. As for this template's "failure", that is entirely your opinion. I agree with the anonymous IP editor that 1000 transclusions is significant, especially since I've only used it on mostly my best developed articles and haven't gone around adding to articles to help popularize it. I think it's use is spreading quite well, and will probably continue to do so with time. Rather than trying to stop its spread by deleting it, could you try using it and help standardize how projects, books, and portals are presented on Wikipedia. If standardization is truly your goal, that would make more sense. – Maky « talk » 19:00, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- It would make more sense to do so if this template were the best, most standard and community-adopted way to do so. It is not. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:32, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

- Keep over 1000 transclusions, clearly this has favor with editors. If every article had to have every template then all templates would need to be deleted for not being used by atleast 1 million articles -- 70.51.203.69 (talk) 05:22, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- "If every article had to have every template" - straw man. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:48, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- IMO, that's hardly a strawman argument. You're trying to argue that this template hasn't reached some magical threshold for widespread use. Is there a policy or guideline that defines how widely used a template must be after a certain period of time in order to be kept? And as for those ~1500 transclusions, have you looked at the list? These aren't trivial articles. Just skimming over the list, there are very important articles about well-known elements, geographic locations, important political figures, and other notable figures. – Maky « talk » 19:00, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
- They are indeed significant articles. All the more reason to remove this non-standard, ill-conceived template from them. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:32, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- That's the argument used for deletion, so it is a strawman, it is the nominator's (your) strawman, not mine. If you call your own deletion argument a strawman, you should withdraw your own deletion nomination. Your argument is that there are millions of articles and this doesn't appear on millions of articles. That means all templates should be deleted, because they don't appear on millions of articles. You made no reasoning as to why this particular template should appear on millions of articles, since templates should not appear on all articles, anything that needed to do that should be built into Wikimedia itself. Templates should only be used discriminately, anything that apples to every page should be part of the software. -- 70.51.203.69 (talk) 05:22, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

- Your reasoning in the deletion rationale has no bearing since it is irrelevant how many articles exist on Wikipedia, so the only way that statistic matters is if all templates are used on every article, otherwise, you have no deletion rationale, since no template is expected on every article. Indeed if any template were to appear on every article it would mean that MediaWiki is deficient, and that WikiMedia to install additoinal extensions. So, your deletion rationale is missing. -- 70.51.203.69 (talk) 04:18, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

- Keep. Neat and combines the functions of several different templates, e.g. {{Portal}}/{{Portal bar}}, {{Commons}}, {{Wikiquote}}, {{Wikisource}}, etc., etc. These other templates are boxes of varying sizes; including several of them in an External links or See also section adds to the visual clutter in articles and, if the boxes are aligned to the right, often creates white space (as at A Midsummer Night's Dream#External links). I can't comment on the code but visually {{Subject bar}} is the most elegant solution to including Books, Portals, other Wikimedia projects, etc., in one place. Ham II (talk) 06:42, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for helping to make my point. {{Portal}} has 5,789,637 transclusions. {{Portal bar}} = 17,492. {{Commons}} = 623,126. {{Wikiquote}} = 22,094. {{Wikisource}} = 11,404. It's clear to the proverbial blind man on a galloping horse which templates the community prefers. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:27, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep – Per the rationale of User:Ham II. A functional template that provides opportunities to neatly combine various links. Its deletion won't improve the encyclopedia, and would simply limit options. North America1000 06:52, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

- Keep per North America 1000's rationale above. I'm not in love with the design of this template, but it apparently serves a purpose on pages that have multiple wikibook, portal, Commons, and other Wikimedia links. A stronger rationale for deletion is required. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:02, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- Why was this relisted on 1 July? Alakzi (talk) 13:09, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- delete, horrible design. we shouldn't keep a poorly designed template when there are better alternatives. for example, create a wrapper like {{multiple issues}} which can be used to wrap {{portal bar}}, {{commons}}, {{wikiquote}}, ... to combine them into one box. this is not the solution. - @Frietjes: As I noted above, I am not in love with the design of this template, but I don't believe that is a sound "delete" rationale here. I think the remedy you seek may be a template talk page discussion to improve its design. A quick review of the articles where it is presently being used (e.g., Argon) show that is has useful organizational purposes for end-of-article links. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:48, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- yes, the subject bar in that article dwarfs the surrounding content. it would look better if we replaced the portal bar with the standard {{portal}}, {{wikibooks}}, {{sister project links}}, ... Frietjes (talk) 13:54, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

- Simply wanting to delete something because it rivals a template you prefer is not a reason for deletion. Wikipedia evolves by being bold and trying new things. As a regular contributor at FAC, I've both watched and participated in the changing of standards that has resulted in significantly improved featured articles. The norm was to do things one way, a minority would stand up and challenge the norm, and eventually practices changed. The handling of portals, projects, books, etc. with the old system is a mess and horribly unprofessional. Multiple floating boxes disrupt the flow of text, while bars (like the nav templates) help organize relevant links in a consistent, non-disruptive fashion. Maybe this template is badly designed... I don't see it, and if so, I would love to see someone design an alternative. Either way, the plethora of floating boxes are the templates that need to go. This constant fight to delete this template needs to end. This attempt to force this deletion through email and the non-disclosure of what was said calls into question the character of those involved. (Btw, why is an admin who's marked as retired re-opening this closed discussion? See his talk page.) – Maky « talk » 16:29, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- Keep - I'm not aware of any policy stating that 1400 transclusions is not enough. In my opinion, being used 1000 times indicates that this template is used more than enough to warrant keeping. WP:ANDYDOESN'TLIKEIT is not a valid reason to delete. Rlendog (talk) 17:50, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- Comment – The template is presently transcluded on 2,202 pages (see Template transclusion count), which I find to be significant, particularly because Template:Subject bar requires more work to publish than a simple copying and pasting of its contents. North America1000 19:38, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

- I am contesting this pending merge of Infobox NFL coach and Infobox NFL player because no notice was provided to WP:NFL, nor was a TfD notice placed on Infobox NFL player. - 2014 February 17 – Infobox WNBA biography ( links | talk | doc | sandbox | testcases ) – Merge into {{Infobox basketball biography}}
- Note that you cannot easily merge those two templates as the usage of those is somewhat different. WNBA template uses a large text string in the fields overseas_career_teams and career_teams. In contrast the "normal" biography uses years1, team1, years2, team2, etc. So an automated merge is probably not possible, though a bot might make a more or less smart guess (it would need to extract the year information and merge it into those years*, team* fields). Or just add a WNBA box to the normal biography, though the formatting of years/teans will then look different from woman vs. man players (for the reasons outlined above). --Bthfan (talk) 18:44, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

To convert
Templates for which the consensus is that they ought to be converted to categories, lists or portals are put here until the conversion is completed.
- None currently
To substitute
Templates for which the consensus is that all instances should be substituted (i.e. the template should be merged with the article) are put here until the substitutions are completed. After this is done, the template is deleted from template space.
- None currently
To orphan
These templates are to be deleted, but may still be in use on some pages. Somebody (it doesn't need to be an administrator, anyone can do it) should fix and/or remove significant usages from pages so that the templates can be deleted. Note that simple references to them from Talk: pages should not be removed. Add on bottom and remove from top of list (oldest is on top).

Ready for deletion
Templates for which consensus to delete has been reached, and for which orphaning has been completed, can be listed here for an administrator to delete. Remove from this list when an item has been deleted. If these are to be candidates for speedy deletion, please give a specific reason. See also {{Deleted template}}, an option to delete templates while retaining them for displaying old page revisions.
