Donations
I am a regular donor to Wikipedia, but I still get the Donations banner on my screen each time I am using Wikipedia. How can I stop this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.161.103.77 (talk) 00:58, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- You can dismiss it. I'm going to guess since you have an IP, perhaps it changes depending on where you get on the internet, so if you create an account, it should fix the problem. CTF83! 01:09, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
could someone please fix a page? (list of top gear episodes)
hello, this List of Top Gear episodes page is a mess, someone made a mistake in the syntax. i tried to find the mod so i can revert it, but no luck. the problem is at the section "series 2": -there is a text under the section: "{{Episode list/sublist|List of Top Gear episodes" -the episode number 16 (series 2 episode 6) has an extra cell AND ALL the data before seems could not be parsed by the engine — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.165.211.238 (talk) 01:05, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- It actually has to be edited at Top Gear (series 2). I just reverted the last user's edit and fixed it. I couldn't figure out what they did wrong. CTF83! 01:13, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Fair Use Licensing Issue[edit]
Hello, I just recently used Wikimedia and Wikipedia to upload an image to Wikimedia Commons about Paul Frank. When I was uploading the image it was properly licensed as Creative Commons however I didn't realize that it went against the "Fair Use" regulations. I was wondering if I should remove the image. Please let me know what to do, thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arios21 (talk • contribs) 01:14, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- The image is fine according to Wikipedia:Upload/Flickr. Your upload looks fine to me, you properly attributed it to the source, as required by the original uploader. CTF83! 01:24, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Arios21: while the image itself has a proper license, the fact that the image consists of primarily copyright images is likely an issue. you might want to discuss with some subject matter experts at Wikipedia:Copyright_problems. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 17:42, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Page view stats down[edit]
Why have page view stats been down for last 4 days ? eg http://stats.grok.se/en/latest/Psychopathy --Penbat (talk) 06:31, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- stats.grok.se is run by a single volunteer editor on his own initiative but is frequently behind, down or missing dates. There is an alternative tool run by the Wikimedia Foundation at https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiviewstats/. Last I heard (some time ago) they said it was still being tested and they didn't recommend linking it from page histories yet but it seems to currently work well, at least for my test on Psychopathy. Interlanguage link bug[edit]
Hello, I just translated an article from French Wikipedia into English. I tried to add an interlanguage link but it comes up with an error box saying "An unexpected error occurred: $1.". When I click "Details", it says "Invalid token". I tried adding the link from both the English page and from the French page, but the error is the same. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AKRowe (talk • contribs) 07:53, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- interlanguage linking is done via WP:Wikidata-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 11:13, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- The described error occurred when I used the "Add links" link to wikidata under "Languages" as you are supposed to (it now says "Edit links" because there already is the link I added). PrimeHunter (talk) 11:19, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- I got the same error from the English page Un fou and didn't try the French fr:Un fou (nouvelle, 1885) but was able to do it under "Wikipedia pages linked to this item" at wikidata:Q16681742. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:04, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- At present the French and English articles appear to be linked correctly. EdJohnston (talk) 19:37, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Lost password email never arrives[edit]
I have a Wikipedia account (it's asciident) associated with my Gmail address. I've forgotten the password. When I use the lost password/reset self-service, I enter my email address and receive the confirmation message "A password reset email has been sent." The email never arrives. Not in inbox, not in spam, nowhere. I've tried on a number of occasions spanning years at this point. I guess I could just create another account, but I'd like to understand why the email is never arriving. Thanks. 97.95.213.239 (talk) 10:40, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- Are you sure it's the address stored in the account? A wrong address also gives the message "A password reset email has been sent." I think that's for privacy reasons to prevent other people from examining whether an email address has an account. Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 129#Gmail labelling Wikipedia email suspicious mentions a problem for some email services including Gmail, but I don't think it goes back years. Creating a new account is OK. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:34, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
-
- Thanks very much for pointing this out. I've been trying to reset the password with my default Gmail email and thought the confirmation message indicated that I'd used it on my Wikipedia account. Your reply reminded me that I used a vanity email tied to my domain for my Wikipedia account. :) Thanks again. Melissa Brogan (talk) 09:29, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- I don't think you ever registered an email address with that username (it's not a requirement of having an account). I say this because I don't get the 'Email this user' option when viewing that userpage which is usually between Logs and Upload in the 'Tools' section on the left. Of course, you might have turned that off in the accounts user prefs but I doubt it. Nanonic (talk) 12:05, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Delete a Profile[edit]
Hi there Wikipedia!
Hope you're having a good weekend so far. How can I delete a profile (article)? I would like to delete the profile (article) of Michael Levine.
Thank you for your help, Cczeto (talk) 14:35, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- What do you mean? Michael Levine is a disambiguation page and there can be no good reason for deleting that. If you mean Michael Levine (author), a page you have edited in the past, then you will need to explain why you want it deleted. See Wikipedia:Deletion policy for what we consider valid reasons for deletion. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion for the deletion process. SpinningSpark 14:56, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Cczeto: And if you are considering it a "profile", you probably have a grave misconception of what Wikipedia is and what is appropriate. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and has "articles" that reflect the mainstream academic consensus of the subject, not a CV and not something the subject has any control over. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 17:38, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Okay, sorry ... didn't mean to call it a profile ... meant to say "article." I don't have "grave misconception" (why the condescending words?) I was just asking and sorry again for using the wrong word(s), didn't mean that at all. Yes, Michael Levine (author), I inserted the wrong link. I will look at the Deletion policy.
Thank you again for your help I greatly appreciated it, Cczeto (talk) 18:06, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- "Grave" was perhaps hyperbole, but in my experience, people who talk about a "profile" in connection with Wikipedia generally are indeed framing Wikipedia as something different from what it is. --ColinFine (talk) 21:44, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Creative Commons question[edit]

creating article and images[edit]

- Hello, and yes, you can create an article!
- But you should first make sure that the subject of the article meets the basic requirements for a stand alone encyclopedia article: that non-related parties, with a reputation for fact checking and accuracy have considered the subject worthy of note and discussion.
- If you have such sources like published books or major newspaper articles, I would then suggest you follow the "articles for creation" process. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 17:10, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Deletion[edit]
How can one retrieve a created page that was deleted. I created the page The Accumulative Advantage Foundation and it was deleted or several reasons. I spent a lot of time creating the page and was wondering if I could receive the text back. Thank you and sorry for the hassle.
Roy Miller — Preceding unsigned comment added by Millticket90 (talk • contribs) 21:31, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hello, Roy. The page was deleted by administrator Xezbeth, with two reasons given. One of them is "Unambiguous copyright infringement". According to the message, it was copied from http://kidsadvantage.org/?page_id=17. Since that page does not explicitly release the content under a suitable licence (such as CC-BY-SA) Wikipedia's rules forbid using the content - even if you or the organisation you represent hold the copyright we would need explicit release of the content: see donating copyright materials for how you could do that. But there was another problem (the other reason given): "Unambiguous promotion or copyright infringement". Material copied from a person's or an organisation's website is almost never suitable for a Wikipedia article, because it is not usually neutral in tone. For your own website, that is proper, of course, but it is not proper for an encyclopaedia. Any article about the Accumulative Advantage Foundation should be written in a neutral tone, drawing its content mainly from reliable published sources unconnected with the foundation which have written about it. In fact, as the President, you have a conflict of interest, and should not be writing for Wikipedia about it in the first place. Your best course is:
- See if you can find places where reliable sources, unconnected with you or the foundation have already written at length about it.
- If you can find these, then the foundation meets the criteria of notability, and you should request and article at requested articles, giving references to the sources you have found.
- If you cannot find such sources, then I'm afraid that at present, Wikipedia cannot have an article about the foundation.
- Good luck -- ColinFine (talk) 22:04, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Millticket90: As an administrator I can see that you made some formatting and modifications to the deleted page. It's still against our copyright policies to make it visible on our servers and your account has not stored an email address, but if you mail me then I can mail you a copy. You can enable email at Special:Preferences and use Special:EmailUser/PrimeHunter, or you can mail me by going to my website linked at User:PrimeHunter. Don't post your mail address here. It's against our policy and may get the attention of spammers scanning this page. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:08, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Ed Ayres biography[edit]
I am Ed Ayres. I left a message here some days ago, concerning my distress about the biographical entry for me. In view of Wikipedia's policy discouraging self-written or edited biographies, I asked whether one of your volunteer editors might help. There are two problems with the bio: first it is about 10 years out of date (I don't know who wrote it) and is missing key information (books published, etc.); and second, it is flagged as needing citations. I can provide the missing information and citations, but your Catch-22 policy on one hand doesn't let me do the edit, and on the other hand asks me not to leave an e-mail address here so someone can contact me to obtain the citations. I tried in my earlier note to list some of that missing information and documentation on this page, but when I checked in later nothing had happened.
Bottom line: If Wikipedia can't provide a means by which I can get my bio properly completed and edited, I'd rather have it removed entirely. Wikipedia is a noble undertaking, but if it lacks accountability it also necessarily lacks credibility. If there is no way I can get the bio updated with proper citations, or communicate with a Wiki-approved editor regarding how to get that done, I must request that you (whoever you are!) also delete my biography altogether from Wikipedia.
Ed Ayres — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.33.162.104 (talk) 23:24, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- Your previous comments and the responses have been archived.
- Wikipedia is not a customer service center, Wikipedia content is handled by volunteers who do what they want to do, when they want to do it. Sometimes, unfortunately, it takes a while for someone to be interested and simply being "out of date", is not something that most volunteers would place high on their list of things to do. You can help the work take less time by using the article talk page to provide your source material.
- If there are serious misrepresentations that need to be corrected, please use the WP:OTRS. The volunteers there have placed a high priority upon responding to situations that need urgent review and are generally able to help in a matter of hours. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 01:09, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- Ed (if you actually are Ed): the way to handle this kind of thing, is to post the information you'd like to see added to (or corrected in) the article (properly sourced, of course), to the talk page of the article, disclosing as you do so your own conflict of interest and explaining that this is why you didn't just make the changes yourself.
- If you register an account, you are a Wiki-approved editor (although bound by our expectations and guidelines). We don't have ranks and hierarchies, except as a recondite little in-joke.
- The subject of an article does not have any privileged role in "approving" an article; else we wouldn't have articles on people from Kim Il Sung to Scott Walker to Michael Vick. Anyone can create an article on a notable subject; anyone with an account can propose the deletion of an article: but unless the reason for deletion is valid, such proposals will be defeated. (And, "I don't like what you say about me" is not a valid reason to delete an article; never has been.) --Orange Mike | Talk 01:16, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- Just to note that the OP apparently did have an account (User:Willhumansendure) but you blocked him in 2011 for reasons I don't fully understand. SpinningSpark 07:05, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- willhumansendure.com is the name of a website of his, one which he inserted into the article about himself. Thus it was blocked as a spamusername. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:14, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- Just to note that the OP apparently did have an account (User:Willhumansendure) but you blocked him in 2011 for reasons I don't fully understand. SpinningSpark 07:05, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- I am sorry that Mr. Ayres is distressed by the state of the article – though that in itself is not a reason for changing the article. I am also puzzled that he is distressed by it. The article strikes me as entirely reasonable about him and his views. I, like I believe most Wikipedia editors, am more sympathetic to his views than are, say, most Republican voters; though of course we try to write neutrally. I think that what the article lacks is recent material, and above all references. I have copied the contents of Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2014_August_26#biography_for_Ed_Ayres to where it belongs, the article's talk page. I hope that someone can provide more references. Maproom (talk) 10:06, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- the version as it stood was rather messy to look at. But i am a bit confused as both then and now the "recent" 15 years seems very well covered and what is missing is the first 50 years! -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 17:52, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Do categories follow a merge?[edit]
An example is at Mantell UFO incident, which has the category Category:1922 births. Is this normative, or do people sometimes put categories on redirects, such at Thomas Mantell?
The current issue has to do with an article at AfD: Santa Clara County Park Ranger, in which an editor has removed the categories from the new target article Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department. Specifically, the categories removed are
- * Specialist law enforcement agencies
- * Specialist police departments of the United States
- * Lists of United States law enforcement agencies by state
- * Law enforcement agencies of California
- * California law-related lists
- * Law enforcement in California
- * Law enforcement in the San Francisco Bay Area
Unscintillating (talk) 00:27, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- Generally, categories are avoided on redirects except for maintenance categories. However, there are some exceptions, and your example is one. It is a nonsense to give an article on an event a birth category. See Wikipedia:Redirect#Categorizing redirect pages. SpinningSpark 01:06, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
Ethnic categories[edit]
- Question about the category Category:African-American_television and Category:Hispanic_and_Latino_American_media Is it suitable to place the TV show Orange_Is_the_New_Black under those two category since the cast members and characters are a diverse ethnic mix Venustar84 (talk) 03:53, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- It seems to me those cats need better definitions, including a source in the article identifying them as such. If "since the cast members and characters are a diverse" then I Love Lucy would be Category:Hispanic_and_Latino_American_media because it starred Desi Arnez and that is just crazy. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 11:55, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Info box picture size[edit]
As of yesterday , the infobox picture I'm referring to was a larger size, and as of this morning, it's smaller. Also I was wondering about how to add a section to the info box. When I go to 'edit source' , the cause of death (by the way, I'm referring to the John Belushi page)but the cause of death is not shown on the info box, why is that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnsgirl84 (talk • contribs) 17:07, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- The infobox picture is now the correct size, rather than the ridiculously oversized picture it was previously, as here. Template:Infobox comedian does not support a "Cause of death" parameter, so this would require nested infoboxes which is quite complex. I note a number of your edits to the John Belushi page have been reverted because of your removing cited material, and your addition of personal opinions. When you started editing the page on 28 August, the article was 23kb long and had 22 references, it is now 29kb and only has 20 references. Please ensure that your additions are supported by references, or they may well be removed. - Arjayay (talk) 18:52, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

You will need to create a new account, and then make it clear on your userpage that the account in which you forgot the password for is your old account and your new account is a legitimate sockpuppet; in short, declaring your sockpuppet. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 17:52, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
About Indian map on page 'INDIA'[edit]
Hello I am a concern Indian citizen and I have found a mistake in the map of India as you have show Jammu & Kashmir as not a part of India but it is a state of Indian territory as it is concern with our emotions and it is really very hot issue between India Pakistan and China. - This has been discussed many times and will not change. Talk:India/FAQ says: "The map shows the actual borders and all related claims; it cannot exclusively present the official views of India, Pakistan, or China. See WP:NPOV." Note that the map at India#Subdivisions also shows the Indian color for an area claimed by Pakistan but controlled by India, so Wikipedia does not side with Pakistan in the conflict. - For Wikipedia to have an article on the subject, we would need evidence from third-party published reliable sources that it met our notability guidelines - and if it did, any claims that it had medical benefits would need to comply with the relevant reliability criteria. We don't carry articles on random quack cures sourced to promotional websites. AndyTheGrump (talk) 02:07, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Editing Mobile CSS Overrides[edit]
I am trying to hide in text citations on Wikipedia. I've discovered the mypage skins.CSS and common.CSS, and added the code to those. When added, citations are hidden in the normal desktop view, but when viewing from a mobile browser, it seems that the CSS being rendered with isn't passing via the common.CSS page. Is there any way to override CSS elements when viewing using the Mobile style of Wikipedia? Silivrenion (talk) 09:07, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- According to this Village Pump thread custom styling is currently ignored in mobile view. You can, however, force your mobile device into the desktop view by a link at the bottom of every page and your personal css will then take effect. SpinningSpark 10:31, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Uploading Images for the band article - pictures from shows, logos and album covers[edit]
Dear Wiki helpdesk,
I am writing an article about the band Stormy Atmosphere. It includes bands' biography, discography etc. I'd like to upload bands' logo, a picture from a show and two album covers. All these were made by professional designers and photographers, who sold the stuff to the band and/or granted all the rights to the it. I know the band members personally, but I assure you that all the info in the article is true, totally objective, and has independent proofs.
Please guide me how to enrich my article with these relevant pictures, with no risk of getting them used/stolen by some third party, because the band owns them and they wouldn't like them to be used by anyone without bands' permission.
Thank you in advance,
Truly

- Before concerning yourself with images, I think you should read Wikipedia:Notability (music). Judging by the draft article you have prepared, [1] I doubt that the band meets our notability guidelines. AndyTheGrump (talk) 12:30, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
-
- But if the band ever does "make-it", all pictures uploaded to Wikipedia Commons must be freely licensed; allowing anyone to use, edit, alter and redistribute them, for any purpose (including making a profit, or being derogatory), and you will have no control over this whatsoever. - Arjayay (talk) 16:27, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
-
-
- I don't think Arjayay's comment is completely clear, so I'll amplify it: in order for copyright pictures to be uploaded to Wikipedia Commons the holder of the copyright must explicitly license them using one of the licences accepted by Wikimedia. Doing so will grant anybody the right to use the image for any purpose, (including commercial purposes), as long as they attribute the image correctly; and the copyright holder will by licensing them have given up all control over their use. --ColinFine (talk) 16:41, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the answers, but I'm quite new to this so please be patient with me :)
If I understand you correctly, all the relevant pictures can be uploaded here(commons), then I will be able to add them to the article
And by doing that I automatically allow anyone who desires to use these pictures for any purpose?
Thank you in advance,
Silverray
P.S - To Arjayay - The article has already been banned by other moderator who thought he band doesn't meet the criteria.
But then I provided independent proofs for all written in the article, and the content was restored.
You can see the details here
Dear Helpdesk,
Still waiting for your answer on this:
If I understand you correctly, all the relevant pictures can be uploaded here(commons), then I will be able to add them to the article
And by doing that I automatically allow anyone who desires to use these pictures for any purpose?
Do I understand the process right?
Thank you in advance,
Silverray

- Photos and copyright is a bit complicated, if there are band photos you have taken yourself (not ones you found online, such as promotional band shots, unless you can prove legal ownership (i.e. you were the photographer)) at a concert then you can upload then, you must release these photos under a free licence (allows anyone to use them, even commercially, forever) or public domain to use them on Wikipedia (see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials). Pretty much everything else is covered under fair use. Album covers can only be uploaded only to individual articles on the album itself (1 per article), unless the actual art work receives significant coverage from reliable sources. Logos are likely copyrighted (unless they use simple geometric shapes and text) and again, unless the actual art work receives significant coverage from reliable sources, they're a no-no. See Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria for a bit more detail on using non free photos. Commons is ONLY for free material that you own the copyright for (and simply claiming to represent the copyright holder isn't enough). Due care should be used when donating/uploading, or else they'll likely be deleted, you should read and understand all the guidelines/policies I have linked you to first. - Silverray123, you said, “All these were made by professional designers and photographers, who sold the stuff to the band and/or granted all the rights to the it.” That is not the way professional designers and photographers typically work; instead the sell a limited license to the client, which does not allow the client to sublicense their work. See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission if you want to use their work under a free license. —teb728 t c 11:26, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Serbian State Guard[edit]
I am currently carrying out the translation of this article into Spanish. Nevertheless, I came across a problem when I tried to choose the appropiate title. I don't know whether the adjective «Serbian» refers specifically to the guard or to the state. That's why I would like to know if anyone here could help me understand the sense of the name. Unfortunately, I have no idea of Serbo-Croatian so neither can I try to guess the correct name that way. I would appreciate any help. Thank you in advance, Rubpe19 13:46, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- I don't know Serbian either, but the German translation in the article, Serbische Staatsgarde, is saying that it should be read as Serbian State-guard, rather than Serbian-state Guard. You could try asking someone in Category:Serbian Wikipedians. Or someone from this list of editors displaying the native Serbian Babel box. SpinningSpark 14:29, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

{{request edit}} This is Zak Ibsen, and I have attempted to update the information on the 'Zak Ibsen' page several times. I will copy and paste the contents of my edited version of this page, so whoever is in charge of verifying content can add it according to their liking. It is important to me to have a page that is an accurate reflection of my career, and the original content contains erroneous information, errors and omissions. I believe my edit is appropriate and neutral. Please replace the old content with the new version below: Zak Ibsen, also known as Ibby, DJ Ibby, Zak Attack, was born on June 2, 1972 in Santa Clara, CA. During his six seasons in Major League Soccer, Ibsen won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup with the Chicago Fire, during their inaugural season (1998). Ibsen also won the CONCACAF Champions League as a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2001. After being traded to the San Jose Earthquakes during the same year (2001), Zak Ibsen would go on to win his 2nd MLS Cup (2001), as the San Jose Earthquakes engineered a worst-to-first turnaround and defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy in the final at Columbus Crew Stadium. Zak Ibsen also played professionally in Germany for Vfl Bochum, 1.F.C. Saarbruecken, and Rot-Weiss Erfurt (1993-94), and spent several months on trial in Argentina at Newell's Old Boys and Colon de Santa Fe (1995). Zak earned 14 appearances for the U.S.A. Senior National Team, also known as Caps: vs. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Brazil, Spain, Republic of Ireland, China, Scotland, Australia, Morocco, Uruguay, Peru, Belgium, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. Ibsen was also a member of the 1992 USA Olympic Team (Barcelona). This Club Soccer national championship came on the heels of winning the NCAA National Championship as a Freshman at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1990. Zak Ibsen also represented the USA Under 20 National Team with one appearance during the summer of 1990. Zak Ibsen graduated from UCLA in 2000, with a BA in Political Science. Early career MLS Zak was the 26th pick in the 1996 MLS Supplemental Draft by the New England Revolution. He played six games, then was traded to the Dallas Burn for John Kerr, Jr. on June 26, 1996. Zak also played for the California Jaguars of the USISL A-League, when the USA Beach Soccer Team was inactive. At the conclusion of the USA Beach Soccer National Team World Tour, Zak returned to MLS, negotiating a trade from the Dallas Burn (who owned his rights) to the Chicago Fire, where he made 27 regular-season appearances. On February 18, 1999, the Fire traded Ibsen to the Los Angeles Galaxy for a second-round choice in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft. How to ask for a copyright check on a file uploaded to Commons
Dear editors: I was checking out an old AfC submission which has an image brought in from Wikipedia Commons, File:Academy Color Encoding System Workflow Overview.png, which says it's licensed from http://www.oscars.org/science-technology/council/projects/pdf/ACESOverview.pdf . This appears to be copyrighted presentation. I read the information both on Commons (which says "report these on the talk page of the policy", but doesn't name or link whatever policy that is) and at Wikipedia:Non-free content review (which doesn't specifically say whether or not it is to be used for files which are on Commons rather than on English Wikipedia), and I am still not sure where or how to bring this file to the attention of someone who may know whether it's licensing is okay. Any advice? —Anne Delong (talk) 22:18, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- The easiest way forward is to click the "nominate for deletion" link in the sidebar at Commons and then fill in the form. SpinningSpark 23:18, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia page created about Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman needs to be carefully edited because most of the information on this page is not only incorrect but defamatory. Wikipedia Android app and accented Greek letters
Hello!
I'm a big fan of Wikipedia and ancient culture.
I recently downloaded the Wikipedia app for Android on my Galaxy tablet, and enjoy it a lot. Sadly, there is an issue with aome Greek letters that appear in some English articles (especially those that deal with ancient Greek culture).
I do not have this problem with Wikipedia on Windows 7 + Google Chrome, for instance.
Most Greek letters are rendered correctly, except for accented letters, such as omicron with an accute accent, or omega with a circumflex accent. In these cases, a blank appears.
A page that I have used to check this behaviour is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_Code
After investigating a bit, I have found that Wikipedia on Google Chrome on my Galaxy tablet renders also a blank in these cases.
So it appears that this is not strictly a problem of the Wikpiedia app (supposing that the Wikipedia app uses the same rendering facilities that Google Chrome uses on the Galaxy tablet, but I have no idea).
For completeness, this is the configurations I am using:
- Wikipedia app on Galaxy Tab Pro (Android 4.4) --> bad rendering
- Google Chrome 37.0 on Galaxy Tab Pro (Android 4.4) --> bad rendering
- Google Chrome 37.0 on Windows 7 32 bit --> good rendering
Does anyone know where the problem is, and if there is a workaround? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Igtorque (talk • contribs) 11:49, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- You probably don't have the necessary fonts installed on your device. Try googling for a unicode Greek font for your device. You can probably find a free download. SpinningSpark 12:21, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Can't insert spaces in article
There's something strange about The Lovestory LP: it seems impossible to get a space to appear after the bolded and italicised title, or the linked studio album and hiphop in the opening sentence. I've tried deleting several characters around and retyping the space, in case there was some hidden character, but nothing happens. Every earlier version of the article looks the same. It looks the same whether I use Firefox or IE. Any ideas? PamD 14:20, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
- That's really bizarre. I'm still looking for the cause of the problem, but as a temporary fix, entering non-breaking spaces (
) into the cramped-up text seems to correct the display. Yunshui 雲水 14:29, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Company logo on Cambridge Imaging Systems won't show
I am trying to update the company logo on the page Cambridge Imaging Systems
Previously, the logo updated at 09:24, 9 August 2013 showed in the infobox of the page. It was called Cambridge Imaging Systems logo, black and white.png.
Today I uploaded a new logo at 14:02, 10 September 2014. It is called Cambridge Imaging Systems logo and logotype, white background.png.
In the Infobox code, I replaced the file name. It now reads
{{Infobox company | name = Cambridge Imaging Systems <gallery> | logo = Cambridge_Imaging_Systems_logo_and_logotype,_white_background.png </gallery> | type = Privately held | genre = ....
However, the new logo does not show when the update is saved. The infobox just begins with the mention "Privately held" and the logo is ignored.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for help.

- Yeah, good faith. Just Googled the username and found a profile with four bands, to see which one it might be. You beat me to Until Rain (same band, different article title). The other two were apparently never created. Could have been a different Lefteris Germenlis, I suppose. InedibleHulk (talk) 17:49, September 10, 2014 (UTC)

- @LefterisGermenlis:, last point - whilst the notability issues may, or may not be solvable I can see by clicking on the redlink above that one of the deletions was because of an unambiguous copyright infringement. This is always completely unacceptable. CaptRik (talk) 18:01, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

- I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. - You are the victim of a well known scam. Do not pay the money they are likely to demand to deal with this. Google your phone and the message and you will discover ways to handle this problem.
- Wikipedia has not locked your phone, Nor has the FBI. Fiddle Faddle 19:20, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

American Flyers Flight 280
While reading the story about this crash I realized you have the number of the aircraft wrong. American_Flyers_Flight_280, the correct number of the aircraft is N183H. I worked for that company when the plane crashed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.61.170.238 (talk) 20:52, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for spotting that and reporting it, I've confirmed the flight number using one of the article's references and fixed the issue. CaptRik (talk) 21:02, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

flickr and cc 2.0
Hi, I added a pic from flickr, with attribution, to the Christine Rankin article after uploading it to wiki commons. My reading of CC 2.0 is that it's ok to use flickr/CC 2.0 pics on wikimedia provided you give proper attribution; however the photo was soon deleted as a copyright violation. As a general rule, are we allowed to use pics from flickr with a CC 2.0 license? What about cropping them? This is the pic: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nznationalparty/1308724579/ and the CC 2.0 description: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/ MaxBrowne (talk) 00:16, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- CC 2.0 is ok, but not, as in this case, if non-commercial use and no derivatives is specified (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0). SpinningSpark 00:51, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- "CC 2.0" is not a specific license. That could refer to any Creative Commons license released as version 2.0. Commons only accepts CC BY 2.0 and CC BY-SA 2.0 images from Flickr. Anon126 (notify me of responses! / talk / contribs) 04:46, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

how we can sellect suitable wire size for an 11 KW /220v cooker — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.97.56.200 (talk) 08:59, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- This page is for help using Wikipedia, but as a qualified electrical engineer I would recommend that if you don't know how to do it already you should not be wiring up your cooker. Your might burn down your house. SpinningSpark 09:24, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
Referencing errors on Siege of Bastogne
Reference help requested. This is my first time with a reference, and I am not sure exactly what I messed up. Thanks, El O'el Cooter (talk) 15:41, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- In the error message, the word "help" was in blue, indicating that it was a wikilink. The link went to Help:CS1 errors#text ignored. The problem was simply that you had missed out the text "url=" before the url. It has now been cured. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:02, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
Fair use images and embittered IP addresses
User:66.225.185.43 recently added a rather unnecessary non-free image to the Raymond Blackburn article which I removed. No fair use rationale was provided and I could see no basis for there ever being one (it was the poster for a film that Blackburn had been involved in attempting to ban, so its connection to the article subject was tenuous at best). The IP user got very upset, launching a borderline personal attack on me (whatever, I have a thick hide and don't care what some kid in Canada thinks about me) and accusing me of "purging" Wikipedia and Wikimedia (which I don't even use). I'm pretty certain this isn't the right place to put this and I know it is pointless to block IP addresses but (a) I can't find anywhere for reporting breaches of fair use and (b) I really can't be bothered with the whole WP:AN/I rigmarole as I don't think it's important enough. Still I just want to get this out there so as people can be aware of this potentially illegal breach of copyright as I might not always be on hand to remove the image and don't particularly want to get into an edit war with an IP. In saying that if anybody can point me in the direction of a place specifically to raise the alarm about misuse of free images that would be good. Cheers.
