Valasaravakkam (Tamil: வளசரவாக்கம்) is a municipality in the Thiruvallur district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and a residential suburb of the city of Chennai. It is located in the taluk of Poonamallee at a distance of approximately 15 kilometres from the heart of Chennai city. Valasaravakkam lies on the Arcot Road, one of Chennai's arterial roads. It is under the Maduravoyal election constituency.
History
The first planned residential colonies in Valasaravakkam made their appearance during the Second World War. Prior to the war, Valasaravakkam was a small village forming a part of the Saidapet taluk of Chingleput district. Due to its remoteness, development took place at a slow pace until the 1980s. Its strategic location on the Arcot Road has resulted in accelerated growth since then.

As of 2001 India Census,[1] Valasaravakkam had a population of 30,978. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Valasaravakkam has an average literacy rate of 89%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 90%, and female literacy is 87%. In Valasaravakkam, 8% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Infrastructure
Schools:: Important schools in Valasaravakkam include Chettinadu Foundation, Devi Academy Schools, Pon Vidyashram, La Chateline, Our Angel, St.John's and Holy Cross School. It is also a hub for academic tuitions with renowned coaching centres like Devi Institute of Mathematics.
Shopping:The retail landscape here has expanded as in any upcoming suburb. Valasaravalkam now has Reliance Fresh, Spencer's Daily, More, Nilgirisand many other departmental stores. General hardware and construction related outlets still have a major presence, indicating the ever expanding construction scene. One of the biggest shopping marts in Chennai — Mega Mart has come up in Valasaravakkam. Other renowned Brands like Derby, Levi's, Bata (3 stores) have launched. There are also restaurants like KFC, McDonald's, Hot Chips, Saravana Bhavan,Dominos, Cafe Coffee Day, Adyar Bakery, Grand Swets and Snacks, Ganga sweets, Chit Chat are available. There is also a big NaiHa showroom working now for about 3 years, there are also a number of small textile showrooms all over the area. Moreover there are brands of Salon and Spas like Naturals, Green Trends and some single small outlets. With big brands of all types coming in, Valsaravakkam will grow into a great place in a few years.
BBCL and Purvankara have developed major residential projects in Valasaravakkam. There are also big apartments ( with around 10 storeys) coming up near the main road (ie) the Arcot Road. The region has good sewage and road infrastructure. The region has its own neighbourhood newspaper called Valasai Times and Arcot Road Times. The Velveeswarar Shivan temple is a very famous temple here. A movie called 'Veedu' was based on Valasaravakkam.
