The Campuses
Kolkata Campus
The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), formerly known as the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), is India's national institute for the training of marine engineers. It is India's oldest and best known marine engineering college. It has been subsumed into the Indian Maritime University & is today, referred to as Indian Maritime University Kolkata Campus.
Mumbai Campus
While ushering the young independent India into Self-reliance in the various fields, the self-reliance in the maritime education and training took the priority in the planning of the Government of India and the Nation saw birth of the first maritime training institutions in the country. Inaugurated in year 1948-49, the Training Ship Chanakya (successor of T.S.Dufferin & T.S.Rajendra), the Marine Engineering & Research Institute and LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research were established. These premier maritime training institutes has brought glory to the Nation by providing best of the seafaring professionals to the shipping industry, nationally and internationally, raising the standards of seafaring professionalism to ever higher levels, year after year.
Three legacy institutes T.S.Chanakya, Marine Engineering and Research Institute & LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research constitute the Indian Maritime University-Mumbai Campus. [4]
Visakhapatnam Campus
The IMU - Visakhapatnam Campus emerges from the confluence of the centrally established Indian Maritime University at Chennai and India’s premier ship design and maritime research institution ― The National Ship Design and Research Centre. Pioneered in the early 90’s by the Government of India to pilot and consolidate national domain knowledge with global vision, NSDRC has undertaken several milestone projects in the areas of Ship Design, Construction and Applied Research.
Therefore, IMU Visakhapatnam Campus heralds the integration of visionary academic insight with the amalgamated professional expertise and knowledge base on Ship Design and Maritime Technology.
The Director of IMU Visakhapatnam Campus is Prof. S C Misra.[5] The faculty includes senior professors of Naval Architecture such as Prof. R P Gokarn, Prof. Mazumdar, Mr. R C Thamba (Indian Register of Shipping and Bharati Shipyard).[6]
The Visakhapatnam Campus consists of two schools, namely the School of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering (SNAOE) and the School of Maritime Design & Research (SMDR).
The School of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering handles the academic Graduate & Post Graduate Programs of the University in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Dredging & Harbor Engineering. They are also involved in organizing short term courses & programs. The School has 140 students enrolled in the Undergraduate Program, 35 students in the Post Graduate Program & 5 students in the Post Doctoral Program.
The School of Maritime Design & Research, is a Research & Development Center of the university. This School handles several projects for the Ministry of Shipping, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Department of Science & Technology - Govt. of India. All the existing projects of National Ship Design & Research Center was transferred to SMDR after the confluence. The Submarine Museum located in Visakhapatnam, is a standing testimony to the talent and skills of the scientists at the school. The most recent activities of the School is the organising of an International Conference called Tech Samudra 2012, during 6th 7th & 8th December, 2012.
Student Life at Visakhapatnam Campus:
Student Life at the Visakhapatnam campus is abuzz with activities. The students have formed a students society - Naval Architecture Students Society (NASS), which organizes a wide spectrum of activities including Technical, Cultural & Sports Competitions. A major event organised by the students of the university is the GOS Safety Program to spread awareness on Beach Safety on 5th & 8th April, 2012. [7]
La Ola is the students e-newsletter of the university. [8] [9]
The students are very enterprising & have formed several games leagues among themselves like the Institute Football League (IFL), Institute Cricket League & Institute Basketball League.
Courses Offered
The University offers various courses under following Schools of Studies:

The general objective of MBA in Port and Shipping Management is to ensure that after successfully completing this programme, the young students can obtain managerial positions in the shipping and port industry. Further, the students are equipped to solve complicated management problems, having gained required knowledge and competency such as integrated multi disciplinary professional knowledge on shipping and transport at the highest academic level and skills to apply this knowledge on tactical and strategic level in the port and shipping industry. And the general objectives of MBA in International Transportation and Logistics Management are to enable the students to have a detailed knowledge and understanding of both the operations and strategies of shipping as a single transport mode within the context of international multimodal logistics. The course provides the students not only with a solid basis in managerial subjects but also with in-depth knowledge of the supply chain and logistics sector and the latest developments in transport management. Awareness of social responsibilities in shipping and transport, related to labour conditions, safety, security and protection of the environment, etc. are some of the added advantages the students will be endowed with. Leadership qualities, analytical and social skills, besides a strong research oriented mind are also encouraged as essential components of the learning process.
School of Nautical Studies This School conducts three programmes as per the following details: a) Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc. (Nautical Science), and b) 3 Year B.Sc. Degree Course in Nautical Science. c) 3 Year Polyvalent (Dual Certification) course leading to B.Sc. (Maritime Science) The syllabus to first two courses are drawn up with a view to give broad based marine education, with special emphasis on fundamentals of marine subjects and practical aspects of profession. The training programme is so designed, to inculcate officer like qualities and high sense of discipline amongst the cadets.
