Club career
Born in Dublin, County Dublin, Henderson began his youth career with Belvedere FC. Henderson agreed to join Bristol City in May 2007 on a one-year contract starting on 1 July, when his contract with Aston Villa expired.[2] He made his debut against Queens Park Rangers in August 2007, coming on as a substitute in the second half.[3] He joined Conference National team York City on a month's loan in August 2007.[4] He made seven appearances during his spell with the club.[5] He joined Weymouth on a month's loan in February 2008 and spent the rest of the 2007–08 season with the club, making 16 appearances.[6][7] He was offered a new deal with City in May 2008.[8] Henderson came on as a substitute in the ninth minute against Ipswich Town on 13 April 2009 and manager Gary Johnson said Henderson "did really well".[9] He almost joined League One team Wycombe Wanderers on loan until the end of the 2009–10 season on 25 January 2010,[10] before eventually signing for League Two team Aldershot Town on an initial month-long loan deal on 1 February 2010.[11] In September 2010 Henderson joined Yeovil Town on a thirty-day emergency loan [12] making his debut on 18 September in a 4–2 away defeat to Huddersfield Town.[13]
On 3 January 2011 Henderson joined Yeovil Town for the second time on loan and subsequently kept a clean sheet on his return against Brentford and Swindon Town.
Portsmouth
On 8 July, 2011 Henderson joined Portsmouth on a permanent deal, citing his reasons for leaving Bristol City as frustration at his lack of first team opportunities.[14] Henderson was back-up goalkeeper for Jamie Ashdown until Ashdown's loss of form which was one reason for Portsmouth continuing defeats.
On 1 October 2011, Henderson made his Portsmouth debut at Leeds United in a 1-0 defeat and then kept his first clean sheet for Portsmouth in a 2-0 victory over Barnsley at Fratton Park on 15 October 2011.[15] Since making his debut, Henderson established himself as a first choice goalkeeper ahead of Ashdown.
West Ham United
On 16 March 2012, Henderson initially joined West Ham United on emergency loan from Portsmouth until the end of the season.[16] and was part of the squad that won the Football League Championship play-offs 2011–12 ensuring West Ham United returned immediately to the Premier League. On 21 May 2012, Henderson joined West Ham permanently on a three-year contract after his loan spell.[17]
International career
Henderson has been capped by the Republic of Ireland at U-15, U-16, U-17, U-19 and made his under-21s debut away to Sweden in October 2007.[18] He earned his second cap as a substitute against Germany in Cork in February 2009.[19]
Henderson was also called up to the senior national team for a February 2012 friendly match against the Czech Republic.[20]
