This encyclopedia runs on the MediaWiki software, which is the same software used to run the Wikimedia Foundation's projects. At the end of January 2010, the number of articles reached 30,000 entries and grew fast. At the end of January 2011, the number of articles reached almost 70,000 with almost 110,000 pages. Project background and socialization
The Superpedia project was created to ameliorate the digital literacy gap on Indonesia. Among the 230 million of Indonesia's population, the internet can only be accessed by about 20 million people. The availability of digital dictionaries and encyclopedias is expected to help teachers to improve their knowledge. To solve this problem, Superpedia is also distributed freely on CD and DVD.
With some Indonesian education activist from school and non government organization, Superpedia trains Indonesian educators to use Superpedia[2][3][4] with other open source software.
Development scheme
Superpedia is designed to include a variety of Indonesian local content, such as Indonesian local languages, including Sundanese and Javanese etc.
The scheme of the Superpedia development was released in 2009.[5][6]
On October 1st, 2010, Superpedia was moved to the Rumah Ilmu Indonesia local server at Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. It has been tested at new URL address at http://rumahilmu.org/superpedia [7] and then moved to http://superpedia.rumahilmu.or.id.
Donation and sponsorship
Because Superpedia is a non-profit project, it depends on mainly on donations from users. In early 2010, Intel Indonesia became the first company to support Superpedia.[8]
