The Football League is contested through three divisions in England and Wales. The divisions are the League Championship, League One and League Two. The winner and the runner up of the League Championship will be automatically promoted to the Premier League and they will be joined by the winner of the League Championship playoff. The bottom two teams in League Two will be relegated to the Conference National.

Notes
- Leeds United were deducted 15 points at the beginning of the League One season for failure to comply with rules on insolvency. As a part of this Leeds were given their golden share, allowing them to play in League One for the 2007–08 season.[1]
- Luton Town of League One were deducted 10 points on Thursday 22 November 2007 for entering administration.
- A.F.C. Bournemouth of League One were deducted 10 points on Friday 8 February 2008 for entering administration.
- Rotherham United of League Two were deducted 10 points on Tuesday 18 March 2008 for entering administration.[2]
