History
The first South Shields were formed as South Shields Adelaide, and joined the Northern Alliance in 1907-08. After one season they transferred to the North Eastern League. They dropped the 'Adelaide' in 1910, and became South Shields F.C. Following two pre World War I victories of this league, they joined Football League Division Two in 1919, when national football resumed.
In 1929 the club was relegated to the recently formed Third Division North. They played there for two seasons before moving 9 miles west to Gateshead and became Gateshead F.C.
A new club was soon reformed, and this joined the North Eastern League in 1936. They were successful in this, winning two titles before the league was disbanded in 1958. This gave the club two seasons in the Midland League, which proved financially impossible to maintain, due to high travel costs, and they moved to the Wearside League. Upon the reformation of the North Eastern League in 1962 South Shields had a higher level of football to play in again. In 1968 they were founder members of the Northern Premier League. This was the side's most successful period, and they reached the semi finals of the FA Trophy in the 1973-74 season. This, however, lead to yet another move to Gateshead, as Gateshead United F.C., in 1974.
The third incarnation of the team (initially called South Shields Mariners) was established in 1974, and this new team joined the Wearside League in 1976. In the 1975-76 season, they reached the Quarter-Finals of the FA Vase. In 1994 they were admitted into the Northern League and for the 2005-06 season they are members of its Division Two.
The chairman John Rundle announced on 4th February 2006 that the Club was to fold. However, offers quickly came forward to save the club, and a new committee was established. The club secured their Northern League status on the last day of the season with a win over Penrith Town F.C..
The 2006-7 season started brightly with the first 5 league games all won. However, after Christmas the results tailed off, and Shields finished fourth, just outside a promotion place. They did reach the third round of the FA Vase, being beaten 4-3 by eventual semi-finalists Curzon Ashton.
