AFC Wimbledon is an English professional football club, currently playing in the fifth tier of English football, the Conference National. The club and its supporters consider it to be a continuation of the former Wimbledon Football Club, which announced its intention to relocate to Milton Keynes in August 2001.[1] This move was approved in May 2002.[2]
AFC Wimbledon began life soon after,[3] and was accepted into the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League for the 2002–03 season.[3] The club was promoted to the Isthmian League First Division in its second season, after topping the division with an unbeaten league record. The club then finished as champions at the first attempt, and so was promoted to the Isthmian League Premier Division. The 2005–06 season saw the club finish fourth, but the team was defeated in the play-offs. AFC Wimbledon fell at the play-off semi-finals once more a year later.
AFC Wimbledon finished the 2007–08 season in third place, and thus reached the play-offs for the third successive year. After a 2–1 victory in the play-off final away at Staines Town, AFC Wimbledon was promoted to the Conference South for the 2008–09 season. After winning the league at the first attempt, the team was promoted to the Conference National for 2009–10.
