High school career
Calathes left Lake Howell High School as the leading scorer in Seminole County history.[3] He teamed with fellow Gator Chandler Parsons to help Lake Howell to a 31-3 record and a state title in 2006-07.
College career
Calathes is only one of four players in the Billy Donovan era to have been offered a scholarship as a high school sophomore.[4] Last season, he was the leading scorer on the Gator roster at 16 points per game, and also led the team in assists per game (6.1).
In March 2008, Calathes was named to the All-Southeastern Conference Second Team, as well as the All-SEC Freshman Team. He and Kentucky's Patrick Patterson were previously named co-SEC Freshmen of the Year.
His older brother Pat Calathes played basketball for Saint Joseph's University. They both led their respective teams in points per game during the 2007-2008 season.
On March 30, 2009 Calathes announced that he would enter the NBA Draft; however, he did not initially hire an agent, which would have allowed him to potentially return to Florida if he was unhappy with his draft standing.[5]
Professional career
On May 23, 2009 Calathes announced that he would bypass the NBA to play in the Greek A1 League. He agreed to terms with the elite Euroleague champion club Panathinaikos Athens. The three-year deal, sources said, will pay Calathes around €2.1 million euros net income, in addition to providing him with a home, car, tax credits, and endorsements, making for a total package commensurate to what the NBA rookie salary scale provides an early lottery selection. [6] Despite his commitment to play in Greece, he was still selected in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was then traded to the Dallas Mavericks for a 2010 second round draft pick and cash.

Calathes holds dual citizenship with the United States and Greece. On June 30, 2008, he acquired a Greek passport and made his debut with the Greek junior national team at the 2008 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship. Under current United States nationality law, the acquisition of a foreign passport does not automatically result in loss of U.S. citizenship. (See also Vance v. Terrazas.)
In 2009, Calathes debuted with the senior Greek national basketball team and he won the bronze medal at the EuroBasket 2009.
