Marc Dalton is a Canadian politician, who was elected as a BC Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in the 2009 provincial election, representing the riding of Maple Ridge-Mission.
He faced some controversy during the election campaign, when an e-mail he had written to a colleague in 1996 was revealed in which he wrote that
“ | I am not against homosexuals as people, but I do not support their lifestyle choices. I believe homosexuality is a moral issue. Most of us agree on many morals: respect, honesty, kindness. There are also many behaviours and acts that most of us would not condone: rape, robbery, assault, drunken driving, pedophilia, incest and so on.[1] | ” |
New Democrat MLA Spencer Herbert called on Premier Gordon Campbell to drop Dalton from the party's slate of candidates.[1] Dalton subsequently apologized for the e-mail, stating that he didn't intend to be offensive or hurtful and that his views on the equality of LGBT citizens had evolved since 1996, but was not dropped from the Liberal campaign.[2]
Dalton previously ran as a Conservative candidate in Burnaby—New Westminster in the 2006 federal election, losing to incumbent MP Peter Julian.
Besides his political career, Dalton has worked as a teacher at both Pitt Meadows Secondary School (PMSS) and Pitt Meadows Elementary (PME). He also took up a position as a librarian at PME. He has now quit his profession in teaching to give his full attention to politics.
