There are currently 30 head coaches in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The league was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA).[1] The league adopted its current name at the start of 1949–1950 season when it merged with the National Basketball League (NBL).[2] The league consists of thirty teams, of which twenty-nine are located in the United States and one in Canada.
Jerry Sloan has served as the head coach for the Utah Jazz since December 9, 1988, longer than any other current head coach. Sloan has also coached the most games (1755), won the most games (1096), and lost the most games (659) among active coaches with their current team. Orlando Magic' head coach Stan Van Gundy has the highest winning percentage (.671) among the league's current coaches. All active coaches are American, except for the Toronto Raptors' head coach, Jay Triano, who is a Canadian.[N 1] Three of the active coaches, Larry Brown, Phil Jackson and Jerry Sloan, have been inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach.[4] Five coaches have spent their entire coaching career with their current team: Scott Brooks with the Oklahoma City Thunder, John Kuester with the Detroit Pistons, Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs, Erik Spoelstra with the Miami Heat, and Jay Triano with the Toronto Raptors.
