The New York State League was a new independent baseball league operated in the state of New York, scheduled to begin play July 3, 2007. It was not to be affiliated with Major League Baseball. The league consisted of four teams based out of different cities. All games were played at Murnane Field in Utica, New York.
The New York State League existed so that professional baseball players who were not signed by a Major or Minor League organization could have another chance at playing at a higher level. Although the level of New York State League play can be categorized as single A standard, players in independent baseball are usually not scouted heavily by Major League teams. Many Major League alumni have called independent league teams home in an effort get back to the Majors. The league also catered to players who are not quite talented enough to play at a higher level.
It was announced on July 19th, 2007 that the league would be ending operations in Utica as of Friday, July 20th, 2007. Lack of attendance was cited as the reason. The league moved more than 40 players to higher classifications after its suspension. The NYSL announced on July 27, 2007 it would play its 2008 season in New York City. Tickets for its 2008 New York City season will go onsale in January of 2008.
