M9_motorway }} The '''M80''' is a Motorway in central Scotland, running through Glasgow, North_Lanarkshire, Falkirk and Stirling. In total it is 11 miles (18Km) long, but it is separated in to two halves. The opening dates are: *The southern section from Glasgow to Stepps opened in 1992The Motorway Archive - M80 M8 to Junction 3. *The northern section from Haggs to Stirling opened in 1974The Motorway Archive - M80 Junction 4 to M9. It provides a strategic link between the M8 and M9 motorways. == Route == ===Southern Section=== The road begins at M8 Junction 13 in the Glasgow suburb of Blochairn. Striking northeast, the road runs to the north of Stepps, passing underneath the Cumbernauld Railway Line and serves the Glasgow commuter towns of Bishopbriggs, Lenzie and Kirkintilloch. Around 4 miles into the route, the road passes under the bridge for junction 3 and then turns sharp right. It then runs down to a Crowwood Roundabout on the A80 where the southern section terminates. This section of the motorway is known as the ''Stepps Bypass''. Traffic must then continue north east on the A80. ===Northern Section=== When the A80 reaches Haggs at the junction with the A803, the M80 resumes. It runs for around 1 mileCBRD Motorway Database - M80 to its free-flowing junction with the M876 for traffic towards the Kincardine_Bridge. Turning to a more northerly route, the road passes to the west of Denny. After 5 miles it meets a junction with the A91 (the same roundabout interchange also hosts Stirling Services). A few hundred yards on, the motorway ends when it merges with the M9 just outside Stirling at Bannockburn. == Completion project == The A80 between the two sections of motorway is one of the busiest roads in ScotlandOfficial M80 Completion Website - Background. From the 1970s studies have identified the need to provide a motorway along this routeOfficial M80 Completion Website - History. It is intended that construction will begin in 2008 and end in 2010Official M80 Completion Website - Key Dates. The upgrade will be constructed in 3 phases. Running from the southern section, phase 3 will be from junction 3 to the M73_motorway, phase 1 will then run up to the Auchkenkilns junction and phase 2 will then run up to the existing A80. ===Route of new M80=== The route will continue north east through from junction 3 as a 2 lane dual carrigeway passing north of Muirhead. It then heads east to the existing A80. The M73 (for traffic to and from the M8 and England) will be extended to meet a new junction as an online upgrade of the A80. The road will widen at this junction to dual 3 lanes, passing through Cumbernauld up to Auchkenkilns as an online upgrade, where there will be a lane drop. The rest of the route will be a dual 2 lane motorway up to the start of the existing northern sectionOfficial M80 Completion Website - Scheme Map (PDF), where it will cross the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk railway line and Forth_and_Clyde_Canal. == Junctions == ===Southern Section=== {| border=1 cellpadding=2 style="margin-left:1em; margin-bottom: 1em; color: black; border-collapse: collapse; font-size: 95%;" |- align="center" bgcolor="0080d0" style="color: white;font-size:120%;" | colspan="3" | '''M80 Motorway''' |- align="center" bgcolor="000000" style="color: white" | Northbound exits | Junction | Southbound exits |- align="center" | ''Start of motorway'' | M8 J13 | City Centre, Greenock, Glasgow Airport '''M8''' |- align="center" | ''No exit'' | J1 | Blochairn, Carntyne |- align="center" | Bishopbriggs, Robroyston '''B765''' | J2 | Bishopbriggs, Robroyston '''B765''' |- align="center" | Kirkintilloch, Lenzie '''B757''' | J3 | ''No exit'' |- align="center" | Stirling, Glasgow (East), Crowwood_Grange '''A80''' | ''Temporary
