'''Terence James Cooke''', later '''Terence Cardinal Cooke''', (1_March, 1921 - 6_October, 1983) was the tenth bishop (seventh archbishop) of the Roman_Catholic diocese of New_York. He was born in New York, entered St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie in 1940 and was ordained a priest on December_1, 1945. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of New York on September_15, 1965, and ordained a bishop on December_13, 1965 with the Titular_see of Summa. He was appointed Archbishop of New York on March_2, 1968 and appointed Archbishop for the Military Services on April_4, 1968. He was elevated to Cardinal on April_28, 1969, and served as archbishop until his death from cancer. He is interred in the crypt under the altar of St. Patrick's Cathedral.
