'''Brett Andrew Hull''' (born August_9, 1964 in Belleville,_Ontario) is a Canadian-born retired professional Ice_hockey player, and the son of legendary player Bobby_Hull. He is known as one of the game's all-time best scorers with a powerful, accurate shot and announced his retirement on October_15, 2005 as the third-highest all-time goal scorer in the history of the NHL, with 741 goals.
==Playing career==
After two years of college hockey for the University_of_Minnesota-Duluth, Hull was drafted 117th overall in the 1984_NHL_Entry_Draft by the Calgary_Flames. He spent the 1990-91 season with the minor league Moncton_Golden_Flames, being named to the AHL's First All-Star Team and winning rookie of the year honors, before being recalled to Calgary for the 1988 season. In March of that year, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues, for whom he played most of his career.
While in St. Louis, Hull worked very well with his set-up man, Adam_Oates. They were dubbed "Hull n Oates" (a play on the well-known musical duo of Hall_&_Oates). In Hull’s best season, 1990-91, he scored 86 goals, moving him ahead of Mario Lemieux in single-season goal totals and placing him behind only Gretzky’s 92 and 87. He was awarded the Hart_Memorial_Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player following the season.
Following the 1991-92_NHL_season, the St. Louis Blues traded linemate Adam_Oates to the Boston_Bruins for Craig Janney. Although very talented, Janney was not to the calibre of Oates, a highly skilled passer and playmaker who seemed to be the perfect compliment to the always dangerous goal scorer Hull. Hull would later be quoted in several interviews that he was never the same player after Oates departed. This is evident in the significant drop in goals and points scored per season after the 1991-1992 season.
Hull played eleven seasons for St. Louis before signing with the Dallas_Stars as a free agent for the 1999 season. He helped the team to the Stanley_Cup that season, scoring a controversial goal off his own rebound in the third overtime period of Game 6 of the Cup Finals against Buffalo_Sabres goalie Dominik_Hasek to clinch the series. Although replays showed his skate clearly in the crease, officials allowed the goal, ruling Hull had maintained control of the puck throughout. Hull and Hasek later won the Stanley_Cup together as teammates in 2002 with the Detroit_Red_Wings.
On August_6, 2004, Hull signed a two-year, $4.5 million contract with the Phoenix_Coyotes, who unretired his father's number #9 for him. However, dissatisfied with his performance, he played only 5 games with the Coyotes before announcing his retirement on October_15, 2005. Reports indicate that Hull may return to the Dallas Stars in a front-office role (he has maintained ties to the Dallas area, his family lives in the area, and he previously indicated he would retire to Dallas after his playing days were over).
The St. Louis Blues plan to retire Brett Hull's #16 jersey at an undisclosed time in the near future.
==Family life==
His nickname is the "Golden Brett", in reference to his father, the "Golden_Jet". Hull is a dual citizen of Canada and the United_States by birth (his mother is a U.S. citizen). He has three children with his ex-wife Allison: Jude, Jayde, and Crosby.
==Criticism==
Brett Hull has been criticized by the media for competing for the USA internationally despite being Canadian by birth (however, he holds dual citizenship as noted above), his outspokenness about the NHL, as well as the 1999 Stanley_Cup-winning goal.
Hull has a reputation for being outspoken and on numerous occasions has criticised the league, the players union, and other facets of the game. In 1986, Team USA invited Hull to play for them in the World Hockey Championships in Moscow, while Team Canada coach Dave King felt that Hull couldn't skate well enough. Out of loyalty, Hull chose to represent the United States in subsequent international hockey competitions.
