Unnecessary note
Do we really need the note "Note: This editor's username is "Little Mountain 5". It is not his fifth RfA." at the top? Epicgenius (talk) 00:49, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Isn't hurting anything, and the name did cause some confusion, so I don't have a problem with it. Dennis Brown | 2¢ | WER 01:01, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- I see your point. But still, this seems like a little overkill. If this was his fifth RfA, the table at WP:RfA would display "Little Mountain 5" rather than "Little Mountain 5". The note itself is okay—I don't see a reason to remove it—but I just thought it a little redundant because LM5's username is displayed at the top of the page as "Little Mountain 5" multiple times, instead of "Little Mountain". Epicgenius (talk) 01:11, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- A few us, myself included, went to the RFA solely because we saw the table at WP:BN or similar and thought "A 5th RFA?" It does look like that from those tables, and those are what bring people to the RFA. It was only after getting there that I realized the 5 was part of his name. I can't be that different than at least a minority of users, so the sentence does serve some purpose. Overkill? Meh. Maybe extra caution, but it isn't hurting anything. - @Epicgenius: If you read through the supports, a myriad of people made comments about it being his fifth RfA, so Valfontis added the note. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 01:44, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- I dunno, I suppose it's a hatnote. Like {{confused}}. Seemed like a good idea--people are easily confused, even smart people like us. Per my edit summary, I'm not invested in it. If it's causing harm, by which I mean it is distracting (and thank you for toning it down, Ed) feel free to remove it. Either way, we will waste time discussing the "5th RfA" thing here or people will waste time/have fun discussing it on LM5's RfA. Do what you will and let's go write an encyclopedia! Valfontis (talk) 02:16, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Oh. So it's supposed to be a hatnote/explanatory footnote in case people were really confused. I understand. Epicgenius (talk) 14:21, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- I still use the "old style" display (has been optional for a few years...) and it looked exactly like "Little Mountain"'s fifth RfA on my screen. The hatnote is not only explanatory, but necessary. Thanks for adding it. This very thread illustrates and proves that there was/is indeed confusion... Kraxler (talk) 15:37, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

- Bureaucrat note: The note seems to be a useful addition in this instance; I'm fine with it. I removed some whitespace and adopted the singular they [1]. Thanks all. –xenotalk 20:59, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, {{Gender|Little Mountain 5}} returns he. --Stfg (talk) 21:46, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed; my intent was that a disambiguation note should remain neutral. –xenotalk 21:52, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Just curious, not to go too far off topic but for future reference, is there a reason not to out someone's gender during an RfA if it has already been disclosed? Valfontis (talk) 22:17, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- During the RfA etc I don't see an issue especially if they've filled it out in their preferences and here the nominators have used Little Mountain 5's chosen pronoun.
- As a technical disambiguation note of sorts (not part of the RfA proper), my thought was that it should remain neutral to not unduly prejudice the candidate one way or another prior to the start of the actual RfA text prepared by the nominator(s) and candidate. –xenotalk 22:47, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Ah. In my experience most editors assume other editors are male anyway. I made sure in my RfA people knew I was female, because I hate being addressed as "he" and I'm not fond the singular they. <shrug> Anyway, not wanting to get into a GenderGap debate here. Carry on...
