- User:SonofSetanta seems to claim that he is the photographer and copyright holder of this image [1]. He also claims that he is the photographer of File:UDR Soldiers in South Armagh.jpg, and that he is the copyright holder of an arrse.co.uk post in which he states that he is also one of the men depicted in the photograph. However, none of the men in that photograph (taken in Ireland in 1985) are old enough to have plausibly created File:Destroyed8H Cromwell.jpg in a Korean war zone in 1951. Absent a plausible explanation for this apparent contradiction, we should assume that this photo is a copyright violation with falsified authorship information. - G'day, I think we should assume good faith on the uploader's part rather than describing what they have done as adding "falsified authorship information". Based on what they have posted below, it seems like they may have made an honest mistake, being unsure about the requirements for sourcing/authorship information and believing that as they uploaded the image, that that meant they were the source and author of the uploaded image. That said, I believe that you are correct that without the original source, it will probably need to be deleted as it will be impossible to determine copyright conclusively without that. If the source can be found, though, it would probably be ok to keep, as it would most likely have been taken either by a British or US soldier in Korea (thus {{PD-BritishGov}} or {{PD-USGov-Military}} might be applicable licences). Unfortunately, a Google image search doesn't seem to help identify the original source: [2] It might be in book somewhere, though. I will see if I can find it in some of the Korean War books I have and let you know if I find anything. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 00:10, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- I cannot remember how that photograph came into my possession but I only ever owned a digital version and it has been lost now due to a hard drive failure. I'm afraid I can provide no copyright information so if this means the file should be deleted then so be it. SonofSetanta (talk) 13:33, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Here's a different copy - clearly scanned from a print, as you can just see the margins. Source is given as "Courtesy 8th Hussars"; possibly scanned from an official history of some form? Andrew Gray (talk) 00:15, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- I've had it confirmed today from a senior 8th Hussar officer who was at Imjin and Kapyong that this image belongs to the regiment. I have updated the licence information and am awaiting permission from the Regimental Association to use the file. SonofSetanta (talk) 11:03, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
