- He created multiple articles consisting mainly of paragraph-long quotations from the same book, Oragenitalism. E.g. Bowling-Hold_(sexual_technique), [1] (now a redirect), Traité_didactique_de_la_Plume, Playing_the_harmonica_(sexual_technique) (prodded as "howto" -- not sure I agree with the reason, I think it's mostly copyvio), Trip_around_the_world_(sexual_technique) (was speedied by User:Deon, but for the wrong reason, so declined), etc. I don't have time to take part in rewriting such articles, so I'm just reporting it here. - Having noticed File:British Sri Lankans born ic Sri Lanka.png, I tagged the article for speedy deletion as a clear copyright violation. Heading to the image uploader's user talk page to notify them, I discovered a long list of copyright violation warnings going back a significant length of time. I am therefore requesting that this behaviour be investigated. Cordless Larry (talk) 22:38, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Most of this user's uploads have already been tagged for various forms of deletion -- I'll come back later to see whether the remaining stuff warrants an image investigation. This user is also a former text infringer. These prior contribs (before June last year) don't appear to have been investigated systematically, in particular because Pandukabhaya of Sri Lanka is a copy from [2]. - We made an effort, anyway. :) It's at Wikipedia:WikiProject Copyright Cleanup/Blackknight12. That one was checked, but the infringement was overlooked because it was added by a different contributor. :/ [3]. I've spoken to that one about copyvio issues before, too: User talk:Svm1 63. Taking out the ones that aren't tagged for deletion or valid fair use we have 12 remaining images of concern:
- File:Sinhalese of India, Mumbai, India, 1897.jpg
- File:Elara’s bell and cow.jpg
- File:Ehelepola, Molligoda and Kapuvatta with D'Oyly.jpg
- File:Kandyan Convention Signatories.jpg

- File:SL-Army-OR7 Staff Sergeant.PNG
- File:SL-Army-OR5n6 Sergeant.PNG
- File:SL-Army-OR4 Corporal.PNG
- File:SL-Army-OR3 Lance Corporal.PNG
six of which are probably similar to File:SL-Navy-OR9 Admiral.PNG and the others plausible. I'm not sure whether this warrants a full investigation. Would like a second opinion, though. MER-C 03:17, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- Sorry for the delay! My review:
- File:Sinhalese of India, Mumbai, India, 1897.jpg - PD, would be either PD-art or PD-old-100 on Commons.
- File:Elara’s bell and cow.jpg - PD-Art, surface is sufficiently flat and work goes back to 12th century or so.
- File:Ehelepola, Molligoda and Kapuvatta with D'Oyly.jpg - Probably PD-Art, appears to be taken from a book describing describing history of a few centuries ago.
- File:Kandyan Convention Signatories.jpg - PD, dates to 1815.
- File:Kandyan Convention.jpg - PD, dates to 1815.
- File:Sri Lankan Provinces and districts.PNG - Source is unclear - I doubt he actually drew it from scratch - but it's indistinguishable from a map constructed from public domain sources like the CIA World Factbook, so it's fine.
- File:SL-Army-OR9 Warrant Officer Class I.PNG, File:SL-Army-OR8 Warrant Officer Class II.PNG, File:SL-Army-OR7 Staff Sergeant.PNG, File:SL-Army-OR5n6 Sergeant.PNG, File:SL-Army-OR4 Corporal.PNG, File:SL-Army-OR3 Lance Corporal.PNG - Not free, but has a non-free media use rationale (albeit not a very good one). Comparable images are used under fair use, and I think that's reasonable given the low res and the irreplacability.
- I would admonish them about including better, more detailed image descriptions and rationales. Some just have a URL or an unsourced date, and the rationales make only the vague claim that "There is no equivalent of same or greater quality." But the images should probably stick around regardless. Dcoetzee 00:00, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- Reported by SnottyWong spill the beans
- While patrolling new pages, I ran across an article that Jjavie recently created, Cupp v. Murphy. It looks quite suspicious as a copy/paste, but I cannot find any source on the internet from which it was copied. The article is quite long and detailed (for a new article), mostly un-wikified, completely unreferenced, and it was created over the course of only about an hour and a half. A quick look at this user's contributions shows that they have created four other similar articles in the same pattern: all fairly detailed new articles created in a very short amount of time. I can't help but think that this user is copying this material from a source that is not accessible on the internet, but I have absolutely no proof. Can someone else take a look at this and see if I'm just being paranoid? I haven't notified the user of this request for an investigation, because if this request is unfounded, I'd rather it be speedily closed than risk discouraging them from creating what are otherwise pretty good articles. If an investigation is opened, please ensure that Jjavie has been notified. Thanks. SnottyWong spill the beans 21:47, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Just at a quick run through, at least some of their material is PD as Supreme Court releases. Compare Colorado v. Bannister to a PD source and Maryland v. Buie to its PD source. I haven't looked through all of their contributions, but while there is missing attribution for the PD sources, I haven't seen any copyright violations for the part that's not PD. VernoWhitney (talk) 22:06, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The five articles created by this user (representing the user's entire contributions) are:
- Colorado v. Bannister -- as above
- Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Brady -- likely PD
- Cupp v. Murphy
- Search and Seizure Law in Pennsylvania
- Maryland v. Buie -- as above
I don't see a need for an investigation here. MER-C 02:27, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Fair enough, I'll withdraw my request for an investigation. Thanks. SnottyWong spout 17:42, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- History of creating articles from copied material (now at 27 CorenSearchBot notices), much of the older content is PD, but the recent contributions are tending problematic. Recent examples include Jury fees tagged close paraphrase, Femme couverte which I would have been blanked had it not already been redirected, Information and belief (was blanked, since cleaned), and more articles which CSBot missed including Praeter legem (was blanked, since cleaned) and Intergovernmental immunity VernoWhitney (talk) 02:43, 3 August 2010 (UTC) VernoWhitney (talk) 02:43, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- This is user:Agradman. I am taking a Wikibreak for a few weeks due to professional commitments, but I just visited my user page, saw a notice from VernoWhitney (VW) regarding this thread, and am taking up VW's invitation to explain my recent articles. I won't be monitoring this conversation, so I hope someone will email me if, at any point, you would like me to read or contribute to whatever ensues.
- My response essentially boils down to this: Although I have good-faith doubts about whether my paraphrases were Copyvios, I apologize for being sloppy. If you determine that I have, in fact, crossed the copyvio line, then please indicate those articles to me; in a few weeks or months, when I return from my wikibreak, I will assist in expunging the Copyvios from the articles in question (perhaps by asking an administrator to show me the histories of deleted articles), and I will avoid similar practices in the future. Fortunately, not many of my articles were contaminated; my sloppiness was a recent thing.
- First, I understand how my behaviors were suspicious. After VW directly contacted me regarding two articles that struck VW as close paraphrases, I have made more articles in the same vein.
- I did so because I did not feel that I was committing any copyvio. I always tried to dilute these paraphrases as far as possible so that, to my eye, they weren't "close." In many but not all cases, I also included my source in the article. To use VW's own phrase, these articles are "tending problematic"; although I either infringed or I didn't, in this case it certainly is a close call.
- Second: to save your investigation a headache, you will be happy to know that there really isn't any risk of infection in articles I wrote prior to Exception_in_deed. According to Soxred93's tools, I have written 979 articles to date. Sometime around article #925-ish, I suddenly got it into my head that I wanted to attain 1,000 by the end of the summer. The sloppiness began at that point; Exception in deed was the first article I wrote as part of this rushed stretch. As to the articles prior to that, I have made almost exclusive use of Congressional Research Service Reports or other public domain texts as my sources. Note, in particular, that the articles appearing on my Soxred93 list between Equivalence_(trade) and Aarhus_Protocol_on_Persistent_Organic_Pollutants represent almost all the articles employing the CRS template.
- Third, as to my intentions: I appreciate VW's pointing out that most of the 27 CorenSearchBot notices were false positives, based on PD content. I have a long history of honoring copyright here; I have drawn so heavily on public domain sources precisely because I respect the need to keep copyright infringement off of Wikipedia. However, does not excuse sloppiness in the here and now, and I would like to apologize: to VernoWhitney, for putting you to the trouble of this investigation; as well as to the whole WP community, insofar as (in your determination) I have in fact violated copyvio.
- Finally, going forward: If you determine that I have, in fact, crossed the copyvio line, then please indicate those articles to me; in a few weeks or months, when I return from my wikibreak, I will assist in expunging the Copyvios from the articles in question (perhaps by asking an administrator to show me the histories of deleted articles). And before I create new articles again, I will return to this thread, learn from your conclusions (as to whether I have in fact done copyvio), and take your conclusions to heart. Thanks. user:Agradman, editing for tonight as 75.4.17.253 (talk) 07:34, 4 August 2010 (UTC).[reply]
- Thank you very much for your frankness. Are you by any chance able to identify a date where you believe the concerns may begin? Article #925 on the list is at this moment After acquired property clause, which was created in June 2009. I suspect from what you say that this is not the turning point. The program we use to list contributions does permit date parameters, so this could be very helpful. If a spotcheck of content from prior to that date discloses no problems, we may be able to substantially narrow down the check. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:43, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- The page created list is ordered in reverse, so we would be looking at articles 1-58, and Exception in deed was created on 27 July 2010, so that would narrow it down a great deal. VernoWhitney (talk) 16:43, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes, I was unclear; what I meant is, I am referring to all articles appearing above "exception in deed" on the list.
- I have attempted to save you some time by going through this articles and "triaging" them for copyvio. Please see User:Agradman/sandbox.
- Thanks, user:Agradman editing as 167.10.240.1 (talk) 17:58, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- Update: Of the 11 articles that I have identified as potentially copyvio, all 11 are now marked as remedied. (on User:Agradman/sandbox).
- I hope this leads to the closing/non-opening of this investigation.
- VernoWhitney and Moonriddengirl: Thanks for assuming good faith and giving me the opportunity to demonstrate it. I won't be creating new articles for a while ... but when I do, I will now know how not to violate Wikipedia:PARAPHRASE.

- Articles created by editor Royal Dutch Shell market manipulation , Royal Dutch Shell environmental issues , Royal Dutch Shell safety concerns All contain extensive (~50%) of the text copied from copyrighted sources, and placed in quotations, and referenced. The articles still have the same problem in their current (8 Aug 2010) versions. Effectively the article have been written by quotation, with the user generated content acting as glue between the copied text. The quoted text is not necessary in most cases. It is not a fair use example of quotation use. Sf5xeplus (talk) 16:34, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm sorry that this one has languished so long. The problem is, really, that it's a bit out of scope for us. I agree with you that this is a concern, but not really the kind of thing this board was created to handle. Since this contributor has contributed to only 24 articles in the entirety of his career on Wikipedia, though, it should be a simple matter to sort (if not to resolve). I'll move this matter to WT:CP and address it from there. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:23, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Update: Due to various WP:COI issues with the articles the editor has done, someone else has out one up for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Royal Dutch Shell safety concerns is a proposed deletion, and likely(?) that other may also be proposed if that is deleted. That only leaves other articles such as Sakhalin II on which the editor has been editing. - Imperialist competitive algorithm is a newly created article by a new user. A quick search turns up a large number of copyvios (interestingly enough, writers of journal articles in this field appear to be guilty of the same). Thus [7] is the (or a) source of "modeled by picking some (usually one) of one of the colonies of the weakest empire and making a competition among all empires to possess these (this) colonies." and " The total power of an empire depends on both the power of the imperialist country and the power of its colonies." and almost all of the section on pseudocode. Another source is [8], A search on "starts with an initial population. Each individual of the population is called a country" and other excerpts turns up this article [9] although you can only see it with a google search as the snippets show it but you can't read the article itself. Ruigeroeland (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log)- Reported by Qwyrxian (talk)
I spotted one Ruigeroland's newest articles,Cosmopterix facunda while looking at Huggling "All New pages" tab. The phrasing on the description section was very odd, especially the very last line, which seemed to be wording out of a set of field notes. The link provided didn't adequately retrieve the pdf, but through searching, I founn The genera Cosmopterix Hübner and Pebobs Hodges in the New World with special attention to the Neotropical fauna (Lepidoptera: Cosmopterigidae), by J.C. Foster. While this journal article is a collection of many older works, dating as far back as 1825, many of them are newer (the Facunda section is from 1978, for instance) and the journal article itself is from 2010. As far as I understand, that means all of it obtains a 2010 copyright date, and thus anything copied out of this article is a copyright violation. At best, we would have to look at the dates of each individual entry if somehow the copyright remains split by original publication date. I started going through Ruigeroland's history, and tagged 3 of the article for G12 Speedy deletion, but then took a deeper look, and see literally hundreds (just a quick glance seems to indicate xyr 500 most recent articles may potentially have the same problem), so I stopped tagging and came here. This is my first time filing a CCI, so apologies if I totally flubbed an understanding of copyright, or if some aspect of this is not correctly completed. Qwyrxian (talk) 13:44, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]- Ruigeroland has pointed out to me that, according to the hosting website, this article is CC-BY-SA licensed (this is not stated on the article itself). - Huo Xin has requested that I assist in investigating this matter. I have helped edit the Cai Li Fo article in the past on minor issues, but have no particular attachment to the article, its subject, or Huo Xin. I have four points to make:
(1) The Wikipedia article's version from 12 November 2009 was already substantially similar to the version from 11 April 2011;
(2) The contending kungfucertificate.com article is marked "copyright 2011," which suggests that the article there was only published this year;
(3) The kungfucertificate.com article has "Bird Form Kung Fu" as its first title but the content of the article on that page does not mention that style at all; and
(4) The link to Bird Form Kung Fu from the menu at kungfucertificate.com links to a mostly blank page rather than the contending page.
These points indicate that the Wikipedia article has been in something close to its present form for well over a year and publicly accessible during that time, the contending article only appears to have been published in the past few months, the contending article is not internally consistent, and the contending article does not appear to be intended to be readily accessible to the public. It seems clear that, between the Wikipedia article and the contending article, and in the absence of further information so far, the Wikipedia article has a stronger claim to being the original article. Janggeom (talk) 16:43, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- This can likely be closed/rejected/withdrawn at this point. Of the five possible violations I originally found, two have been officially declared reverse violations by an independent admin. A third from the deleted history was based on one of the same "reverse violation" sites. And a 4th, the most recent, was explained by the author as an inadvertent violation. The last was a G12 deletion from a couple of years back. And I'm now thinking that one likely needs to be re-examined as well. So at this point we have only one definite violation, the inadvertent one, and one that I've not even looked into deeply. Even if I wanted to press forward with this, which I do not, it no longer has anywhere near the needed violations to be based upon. - TexasAndroid (talk) 19:19, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've marked apparent copyright violations on the district's page (user's contrib), Edgeworth Elementary School (user created), Osborne Elementary School (user's contrib), and Quaker Valley Middle School (user's contrib). - Surrounding it with quotation marks doesn't mean you're not plagiarizing! I see some violations of Wikipedia:Quotations: "A reader should not have to follow a footnote to learn whose words a quote is," and "Intersperse quotations with original prose that comments on those quotations instead of constructing articles out of quotations with little or no original prose," and "Extensive quotation of copyrighted text is prohibited." - JCAla (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log)
- Reported by Osiris (talk)
- I originally posted the below on WP:AN, but moved to here. Apologies if it's not in the right format.
This user's contributions need to be reviewed. A quick glance over his or her recent additions to the article space reveal extensive copy-pasting/close paraphrasing from non-free online publications (primarily news websites). This came to my attention yesterday, when some content was copied into the article Taliban on the Simple English Wikipedia. It was an obvious copy-paste from this project's version of the article, but I Googled a sentence of it to make sure. The search confirmed that, but also showed an article from TIME.com on which the sentence appeared almost word-for-word:
- Officials from relief agencies say, many women were taken to Pakistan where they were sold to brothels or kept as virtual slaves inside homes.
- Many of the women probably did end up in Pakistan--but were sold to brothels or kept as virtual slaves inside homes, say officials from relief agencies
A quick study of the rest of the section revealed more identical phrasing [14][15][16]. I traced the content back to this edit by JCAla from a few days ago. I did a quick run-through of suspect-looking sentences within other sections of the same article and found more- one of several:
- The report by the United Nations quotes eyewitnesses in many villages describing Arab fighters carrying long knives used for slitting throats and skinning people.
- It quoted eyewitnesses in many villages as describing Arab fighters carrying long knives used for slitting throats and skinning people.
I went over other articles JCAla had recently edited and found the same problem:
- ...several hundred militants from Afghanistan launched a pre-dawn cross-border raid on Pakistani paramilitary posts on Saturday, Pakistani government and security officials said.
- Several hundred militants from Afghanistan launched a pre-dawn cross-border raid on Pakistani paramilitary posts on Saturday, killing up to 36 people, government and security officials said.
On National Front of Afghanistan:
- the Uzbek leader who leads the Junbish in northern Afghanistan; Haji Mohammad Mohaqiq, the Hazara Shia leader from Mazar-i-Sharif who heads the Hezb-e Wahdat; Amrullah Saleh, former head of Afghan intelligence - held talks with a group of four US congressmen in Berlin and issued a joint statement.
- ...the Uzbek leader who leads the Jumbish in northern Afghanistan; Haji Mohammad Mohaqiq, the Hazara Shi'ite leader from Mazar-i-Sharif who heads the Hezb-e-Wahdat; Amrullah Saleh, former head of Afghan intelligence - held talks with a group of four US congressmen ... in Berlin over the weekend and issued a joint statement.
I thought about bringing this up user-to-user, but I'm not very active on this project and the problem seems like it might be extensive. Osiris (talk) 06:27, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you should indeed have brought it up with me, since there is nothing extensive to find.
Made adjustments to the sentence.(1) (2) Since it was just a listing of people, I thought there to be no problem. People are free to check the whole article, which was started by me and has no other editor, for copyright. Everything cited is attributed.
In this diff cited by Osiris above I was just moving already existent content to a new subsection. See the article's talk page on cross-border attacks and this diff for evidence. But, nevertheless, I will look at the content and improve it to comply with policy.
Although I certainly attributed everything to the Time Magazine, I was too careless in how I wrote that. I apologize and have corrected and rephrased everything to comply with policy.
The section that has the sentence "quotes eyewitnesses in many villages describing Arab fighters carrying long knives used for slitting throats and skinning people" quoted by Osiris above. The sentence was just missing the "". The rest of the sentences quoted in this regard do have quotation marks. Checked and improved the whole section for copyright issues.
Feel free to check the other additions I recently made to the Taliban article for copyright:
Also feel free to check other recent addition of content by me for copyright:
tbc JCAla (talk) 08:33, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks for the quick response to this, JCAla. In regards to quotations, that's something you need to be careful with - extensive quoting of copyrighted text is prohibited, and the expert from the BBC added here is likely to be counted as an infringement. Just from a sampling of your recent contributions, I believe this may be an extensive issue, and a formal review will help resolve that. Although I appreciate your attempts to look into the matter yourself. Some more examples:
On Amrullah Saleh:
- Saleh warned that if the Afghan government did not bring necessary reforms, the year 2014 ... would be a year of challenges rather than opportunities.
- Saleh warned that if the Afghan government does not bring necessary reforms, the year 2014 will be a year of challenges rather than opportunities.
On War in Afghanistan (2001–present):
- ...in what many feared was an attempt to further destabilize Afghanistan by adding a new dimension of strife to a country that, though battered by a decade of war, has been free of sectarian conflict.
- ...in what many feared was an attempt to further destabilize Afghanistan by adding a new dimension of strife to a country that, though battered by a decade of war, has been free of sectarian conflict.
Osiris (talk) 09:59, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As you can see in the diff, the sentence was already there before I edited.
This was in the Afghan news (Afghanistan has no copyright agreement with the United States, btw, that is why Afghan images on wikicommons i. e. are legal to use): "Mr Saleh warned that if the Afghan government does not bring necessary reforms, the year 2014 will be a year of challenges rather than opportunities. Meanwhile, Mr Saleh also stresses on fundamental reforms in Afghanistan Independent Electoral Commission."
I used it in the following way: "Amrullah Saleh founded the Basej-e Milli (National Movement) also known as Afghanistan Green Trend which has successfully established itself in Afghanistan. In December 2011, Saleh warned that if the Afghan government did not bring necessary reforms, the year 2014 - when international troops plan on having finalized their exit strategy - would be a year of challenges rather than opportunities. Saleh especially emphasized the need for fundamental reforms in Afghanistan's Independent Electoral Commission."
If that is not okay, I will change it.
I also see some problems here. As these are highly political issues I kept very close to the sources - too close in this case. Have rewritten it to comply with policy.

I raised the situation at WP:ANI after the last time and the only response was to come here, so here I am after this latest instance. TreyGeek (talk) 14:44, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I have checked the edits since this request was made, and there are no additional copyvios. If the problem persists, please contact a friendly administrator (i.e. those that work at Wikipedia:Copyright problems). I will take your word that you have cleaned up after this user. I'm pretty sure they're actually "meeting the rationale requirements". And I didn't upload any other film poster for this purpose, only screenshots that were released in promotional materials and are widely used, and have critical commentary on the subject even in their very captions (and also in the article body). This "a number" is just 2, by the way - I deleted another myself, because there was a free image at the Commons that even fit the article better (replaced at Claire Redfield).[31][32] --Niemti (talk) 10:30, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll also add I'm only learning how to do it. Why didn't you come with it to me to discuss it/teach me, instead of coming here? --Niemti (talk) 10:32, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I also only now realized it was posted here 2 days ago and was about this (single) film poster, which got deleted (twice). So no, I don't upload any more film posters for such a purpose (I wasn't even aware I can't, but now I know), and the few files for the characters' film appearance that I did upload are now being used directly for critical commentary/discussion by reliable sources. I hope it means that's all about it. --Niemti (talk) 10:51, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Careless copying and pasting between articles. Article paste [33] with no indication of where it came from. I google a piece of the text at random on google and got this document, dated 2006-2007, several years before the article creation, which appears to continue an exact copy of some of the text: During the cordial Sino-Soviet relations of the 1950s, the USSR engaged in a cooperative technology transfer program with the PRC under which they taught Chinese students and provided the fledgling program with a sample R-2 rocket. on page 9. It is probable that much of the rest of the text is a copyright violation of an unattributed article split. - These edits to Cambodia were copy and pasted verbatim from Kyoto Review
- After a revert with a mention of possible copyright violations in the edit summary here, the editor reinserted the copy/paste material.
- After a warning was placed on talk page, Devata1 made these edits which are copy and pasted directly from bookrags.com to the Hun Sen article. The Bookrags.com site clearly has the following notice below the text: "Hun Sen from Encyclopedia of World Biography. ©2005-2006 Thomson Gale, a part of the Thomson Corporation. All rights reserved."
- I realize there aren't the minimum of five instances recommended in the reporting guidelines, but I believe the continued copyright violations after being warned of WP's policy requires more eyes and possible admin action. William Thweatt TalkContribs 06:00, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Reported by Viriditas (talk)
- I've waited since March 2009 to open this case because I thought the user would change their ways, but this has not happened. This user has been active since February 2008. I first raised the problem of copy-pasting and close paraphrasing in October 2008.[38] Recently, I've noticed that the problem has not stopped, as I just had to revert an edit they made from October 2011 to Niihau.[39] I contacted the user and explained the problem again, but they still did not show any sign of understanding the issue[40] and reverted my removal.[41] For me, this was the last straw. Including the massive number of contributions this user has made to already existing articles (18,426 live edits to 3,621 unique pages) the user has created at least 255 articles that need to be checked for copy-pasting/copyright/close paraphrasing violations.[42] Starting at the bottom of the list, the article Kalanimoku already shows problems at a quick glance.[43] For only one example from that article, the content, "baptized a Roman Catholic in 1819 aboard...in the presence of Kuhina Nui (Premier) Kaʻahumanu and King Kamehameha II. The scene was painted by ship's artist Jacques Arago (1790—1855)...who wrote and illustrated accounts of the Hawaiian Islands during the French expedition" is copied from this website and the source in the current article is completely different. I do not think this is an example of backwards copyvio, as this problem is found throughout the user's contributions; we're talking hundreds, possibly thousands of problematic edits. For another example, the article Moses_Kekūāiwa has content copied liberally, word for word,[44] from this website, but the offending edits were made by an IP, which I am fairly certain belongs to the user, who edited as an IP before they registered their account in Feb. 2008. Content in Kukona was copied[45] from this website. The link goes to a version of the site from 2003 to show that it is not backwards copyvio. Content in Kalapanakuioiomoa was copied[46] liberally from a book by David Malo without quotes or inline attribution. Now, I don't want to see this user blocked, as I think they can be an asset to Wikipedia, but I do want them to stop what they are doing and go back and fix all of their old edits. I've asked them to do this, and they show no interest and no recognition of the problem. Please help, this problem has become too large for me to deal with alone. - List them all and delete them then; I didn't revert your edit, I added sources to your removal.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 11:08, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- You reverted my edit (which showed no sign of understanding the problem, namely close paraphrasing) and added sources to the revert, which left the problem intact. Look at Haho, for example. You copied[48] content directly from this website. You need to go back and rewrite the content in your own words. Your reply here shows that you still don't understand the problem, and if you are going to continue to copy entire words, phrases, and sentences without indicating quotes or attribution, it doesn't matter if you add a source at the end of the paragraph, it is still considered plagiarism. What bothers me the most here, is that you think it is the responsibility of other people to fix this problem. Please reply with, "I understand the problem, I won't do it again, and I will work with CCI to fix the problem with my past edits." Viriditas (talk) 11:24, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- A majority of all the articles on wikipeda are close paraphrasing or junk with the few exception of legitly good articles. I was adding this when edit conflict occurred... "I have no time in the world to address my many copyright problems that I created prior to 2010; I was in middle school then what did you expect. Just move them to my userspace and delete them and their links. I will create them again in the near future with better sourcing."--KAVEBEAR (talk) 11:29, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Here is a list of all articles I created. [49] List which ones and I will delete them.
- Well, in my opinion, that answer is completely unacceptable, but then again I'm not working on the CCI project. What you think about the quality of other articles has no bearing on the articles you edited, which is what we are discussing. You need to stop what you are doing and focus only on fixing these problems. Everything else you are doing can wait. Viriditas (talk) 11:37, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Again I will fix it in the future. If removing my violations from the face of wikipedia is not enough, I seriously don't know what to do. You can't force me against my will to take on this project. I have school and my life to worry about. I am sorry.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 11:41, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Blanked User:KAVEBEAR/Kukona. However there is a lot of copying, some unattributed, from public domain sources and some of the web pages and articles copied trace back to PD sources: both Hawaiian Antiquities and An Account of the Polynesian Race are PD. There was also some copying from some ~1890 NZ newspaper articles. The nomination mentions User:KAVEBEAR/Kukona, but it is copied from "An Account of the Polynesian Race". I'm not completely convinced to open this request; please provide more evidence. MER-C 13:29, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- If anybody is paying attention, the above blanked page is still at WP:CP waiting for resolution. MER-C 10:32, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I couldn't find any PD sources to account for the copying, so I deleted it. I'm glancing at this, and it's perplexing. This article was established with content from what seems to be a copyrighted source: [50]. See [51]. But this is a close paraphrase of a PD source. I glanced randomly at a few articles he created, and, like MER-C, I'm also seeing mostly clear PD taking. This is a problem under Wikipedia:Plagiarism, but wouldn't justify a CCI. :/ Are there five clear instances of copying from non-PD sources? If so, I should think a CCI might be justified. Otherwise, we don't really have a process for identifying and attributing systematic plagiarism of PD sources. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:18, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Tecnifibre change is copy-and-paste from [61].
- Vice Ganda change is copy-and-paste from [62] (except for the first sentence; this is a somewhat unusual case, since he copied it from another wiki article -- I'm not sure if that discounts it as a copyright violation, but at the very least it is WP:CIRCULAR)

Danish Expert
- Danish Expert (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log)
- Reported by TDL (talk)
- I've found several cases of copyvios in this editors recent history:
- Danish Expert: "To complete ratification at the political level, the adopted law however still requires the signature of the known eurosceptic president Václav Klaus, who appears to be delaying the ratification, although his office so far made no public statement on his intention to assent."
- Many of these diffs also contaion overly WP:Close paraphrasing which I believe constitute copyvios. TDL (talk) 06:33, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I can see TDL managed to find 5 lines among my 5000 lines added during the past 6 months, where there indeed IMHO for 3 of them (reported example 1+3+4) perhaps could be a concern about copyright issues. Thus I have now today rephrased or added the needed quotation marks for them, in order to remove the issues. I promise to be extra carefull in the future to avoid making similar kind of mistakes. But I want to emphasize, that I recently added many new lines to Wikipedia entirely formulated with own words, and in regards of the example 1+3+4 reported by TDL they only concerned some 1-line sentences, where I admitted failed to correctly list some proper quoatation marks for the repeated words. If you invistigate the nature of the info in those 3 examples, you will find the best way to reflect this info is indeed by citing the words of the source with quotation marks, as the lines deal with some press reports about something not 100% surely set in stone, meaning their claims are best to display at Wikipedia by citing them with quotation marks, rather than reformulate their claims and possibly causing a disturbance to the exact info provided by the source. This is also why I in the reported 3 examples, also at first left so many identical words in the upload to Wikipedia (with the intend to keep my upload as neutral and accurate/true to the source as possible). My mistake was admittedly, that I forgot to use some proper quotation marks for it, but this has now been fixed. In regards of the reported example 2, it is a very factual line almost impossible to rephrase with other words, and I bet you can find several identical articles with the exact same line uploaded to the internet, and thus IMHO that specific example do not constitute a copyright violation. In regards of example 5, this IMHO does not constitute a copyright violation because of the format of the content, actually being a check list of the remaining "need to be solved" points in the ongoing negotiations between the Troika and Greek government (which is impossible to formulate otherwise, due to being listed as short factual bullet points; and not being formulated as a sentence/line). In regards of example 1, I already yesterday agreed with TDL on a reformulation of that particulair line, before he went on today to report the old previous version (that only existed few hours) as an issue here; so there is nothing left to correct on that. In regards of the remaining issues TDL reported (example 3+4), I have now today solved both Example 3 and Example 4. Best regards, Danish Expert (talk) 15:40, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- It's certainly helpful that you've cleaned up some of the issues that I've raised, however given that I was able to find numerous examples of copyvios in your recent edit history it's very likely that there are more that have yet to be discovered. I only stopped at 5 because that's the standard for launching a CCI. The point of a CCI is simply to identify copyvios and clean them up, not to punish you or anything. It will help us find other cases where you've forgotten to include quotation marks so that they can be fixed as well.
- As for examples 2 and 5, the fact that something is factual doesn't make it OK to copy other peoples words. You need to take the facts and phrase them using your own words. The fact that other websites may have plagiarised the content doesn't make it acceptable here. And breaking up a sentence into a bulleted list doesn't invalidate copyright concerns, they're still someone else's words. TDL (talk) 21:07, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I still disagree with you about the need to reformulate Example 2+5. I think we need an third oppinion from an administrator to settle that question. As for example 5, I remain to have the oppinion that nobody can claim a copyright violation for me to add an identical topical list to wikipedia (with the topical words identical compared to what is reported by the article), because its just not possible to change the formulation of the topical list without changing the meaning of the topical words. So for topical lists I think it is OK they are identical, as long as we remember to source the content. As for example 2, I also still think you can not claim a copyright violation to an identically formulated "common standard technical description" as the one you highlighted your concern about. The argument goes, that all authors with an economic education would simply opt to use the same way of formulating the line, if they were asked to make the formulation. It is a pure technical description for a bond refinance market operation (where only the figures differs from case to case), and thus not something you can claim a copyright for. So I insist it is not needed to reformulate example 2. I will now wait for the administrators evaluation of example 2+5. If the administrator points out he disagree with me, I will of course accept to change it to something else. But I honestly expect he will agree with my arguments.
- I also continue to disagree with you, that the administrator should open up a CCI for my contributions. I think it was good you pointed out Example 1+3+4 that we now have fixed, but think it is very unlikely an in depth look at all my contributions will be as fruitfull as your targetted search already was. Previously I have used citations and quotes in several cases. The fact that it accidently slipped in 3 cases, does not mean I have a habbit of doing so. I think the administrators time would be far better used, to investigate other editors contributions than the ones originating from my account. Best regards, Danish Expert (talk) 00:00, 26 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I apologise for not getting to this earlier. That said, I did some spot checking of Danish Expert's major edits (~20 diffs). I found a couple of small problems on [65]/[66][67] but also a lot of substantial contributions that appear OK. From what I've seen, it's mostly the eurozone debt articles that have potential problems. This request is borderline and I'm willing to let it slide if Danish Expert checks his previous contributions to eurozone debt crisis articles for close paraphrasing. MER-C 12:25, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- That sounds reasonable, though it might be helpful if you weighed in on whether copying a "common standard technical description" or a "topical list" from a source without the use of quotation marks is a copyright violation. Edits like this, made after the CCI report was filed, seems like a copyvio of [68] to me, but Danish Expert disagrees. TDL (talk) 19:17, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- In those cases, I suggest the use of quotation marks. MER-C 12:39, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- In fact I already did use the "italic quotation marks" for the new "topical list", that TDL raised his concern about in the reply above, so I consider that edit to be perfect straight from the start without any need for correction. By the way, I have today now also added the same italic quotation marks to the Previous Example 5 (topical list), which TDL raised his concern about from the start. And to remove all uncertainty now also reformulated the identical "technical description" (previously reported as Example 2), where it should be noted it was only the first out of my seven lines previously being identical with the source - and now all seven lines are different. In regards of the new problem discovered by MER-C with [1]/[2], I sincerly appoligy. Clearly that was a genuine "copy mistake" on my behalf, where I forgot to reformulate the content after I had copied the lines from the source. It was a huge mistake, and I am kind of chocked that it slipped my attention back then (only excuse is that my edit back then was made "on the fly", where I first copied the lines to an open edit-window, then went on to read a lot of other webpages to check some further content issues, and when returning to save the edit had forgot not to reformulate the lines with my own words). I have immedeately solved the problem in both articles (where the paragraphs are close to being identical): [69] / [70]. I can guarantee to have an entirely clean record during the past month, and of course will now -as you kindly asked me to- also begin to check if I accidently have uploaded other copied lines into the "Eurozone debt articles" (although I sincerly doubt having made any additional mistakes, compared to what has already been reported here in our long discussion). :-) Best regards, Danish Expert (talk) 15:24, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Forgive the intrusion, but perhaps this may help: there is no such thing as "italic quotation marks". The two single-quote marks you have used display italic text, not quotations. What WP:MOS says is "For quotations, use only quotation marks (for short quotations) or block quoting (for long ones), not italics." --Stfg (talk) 19:40, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks for the info, and please forgive me that I accidently mixed-up the quotation mark rules. As far as I remember it is illegal at Wikipedia both to use italic text and quotation marks (unless the italic text refers to an exact title), and this accidently caused my mind to think it was okay just to pick one of the styles; but I got that wrong -sorry. I have now added the correct quotation marks instead of the italic marks for all of my citations. Best regards, Danish Expert (talk) 02:57, 25 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I request for this case to be closed, as suggested above by MER-C. I have fully collaborated and solved the found issues (that by the way only constituted a very small percentage of my total amount of contributions), and we have all moved on with other important work at Wikipedia. :-) Danish Expert (talk) 15:11, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- In those cases, I suggest the use of quotation marks. MER-C 12:39, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- I was drawn to this user's contributions following a listing at CP. Spot-checking another article, i found and cleaned substantial copy-pasting in Dependent personality disorder (which I've cleaned). I checked what he added to Goris in 2006 and found it matches verbatim to this 2001 book. (Removed.) Going one level further, I see more pasting in Infertility ([71]; symptoms and signs; [72]. I see that some of this content has been removed, but I haven't had (nor do I really have) time to check and see if it's all gone. :/ It seems that most of his content I've looked at so far is copied verbatim from various contributors to health.am - this content is under copyright ]. I don't know that a full CCI is needed here, but I'm parking his contrib list in the hopes that we an handle it here. I'd first noticed problem edits here [84] and initiated discussion at the user's talk page [85], and followed up at Chiswick Chap's talkpage [86]; he appears to be mentoring Ellie. I subsequently found a history of copyright violations and close paraphrasing at numerous articles. Overall the account appears to have good intentions, and has made substantial contributions, but the history is problematic, weaving scholarship with passages of copy-pasted text, and will entail a lot of mopping up. COI is certainly a motivation, as most of the edits in question derive from Cambridge University's website, where the account works [87]. Rather than list the many diffs, I've provide links to the articles above, accompanied by links to some of the copied text (by no means a complete listing). A Google search of the larger passages added by AllieBywater will reveal the original sources. 99.136.255.134 (talk) 13:05, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- I recently noticed a copyvio inserted by this user to United Nations System, which I cleaned up. While the user doesn't generate a significant amount of prose, instead focusing on maps/tables/lists/etc, I found that a significant fraction of their recent text-contributions appear to be copyvios. Within the last month or so I found:
S: "Immediately after the General Assembly vote to upgrade the Palestinians on November 29, UN officials still opposed Palestinian diplomats’ efforts to independently change “Palestine” to “State of Palestine” in the formal name of their permanent observer mission ... When they saw that the sign on the Palestinian delegation’s bench in the General Assembly Hall that used to say “Palestine” had been replaced with a sign reading “State of Palestine,” they demanded the new sign be replaced with the old one. As long as Palestine is merely a nonmember state, the officials insisted, it cannot independently ask for its name to be changed on the sign adorning its bench ... The head of the Palestinian UN mission, Riyad Mansour, requested the name change on December 12." "On Dec. 17, the U.N.'s head of official protocol ... the designation of 'State of Palestine' shall be used by the Secretariat in all official United Nations documents ... The designation is on all the nameplates at the U.N. and will appear in activities related to the U.N., such as international conferences."
S: "Security Council’s membership committee deadlocked on the issue .. “The committee was unable to make a unanimous recommendation to the Security Council” " "... was the result of seven weeks of meetings. It details myriad disagreements between the council members on whether Palestine fulfills the requirements set forth in the U.N. charter for members countries."
This user previously edited under User:Alinor, and based on edits like this:
it seems that this issue predates the WP:CLEANSTART. For the sake of transparency, I've been involved in various content disputes with this editor. However, I think the evidence speaks for itself. TDL (talk) 23:10, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- I don't know if this is the place to respond, but a few things should be noted: now I can't address any issues with another user (Alnor). Regarding my edits mentioned above - these are in very contentious topics subject to constant disputes, where often editors argue over minute details of the wording (if it goes against their POV), constantly request more sourcing, accuse of OR/SYNTH, edit-war, etc., that's why in some cases the content is close to the source - edits are in articles with 1RR, ARBIA regulations for whole article ranges, etc.; some of the cases above are initial edits, that I or another editor redacted afterwards; some are quotes and thus obviously are the same as the source; some are from official documents/legal texts of the UN, governments, etc. where the point of using the source in the first place is to show specifically what the act of said institution is - without interpretations by Wikipedia editors or other 3rd parties; some are copied from another Wikipedia article where another editor has initially added those.
- I should note that I fully support the copyright policy of Wikipedia and whatever the result of this procedure is I will be extra careful in my future edits.
- And yes, TDL and I are engaged in "big" disputes and I find this as part of some campaign on his side utilizing the CCI system against me. I'm regret that, because previously I had a good opinion of that editor. Japinderum (talk) 07:36, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- I just noticed that you restored copyright violation #2 to the article, right after your promised to be careful. Please, you need to read WP:COPYVIO and take it very seriously. Do you not understand why this edit a copyvio?
- Also, can you clarify which of the copyvios listed above are the cases of you WP:CWW without attribution that you alluded to? Can you provide a diff of the edit where this content was first added to wikipedia? If you're accusing someone else of adding copyrighted text to the project, we'll need to get to the bottom of that since the original source of the problem will need to be cleaned up as well.
