A Roman Catholic church in Lake Worth, Florida, Sacred Heart Church also runs a private school of approximately 200 students[1].
The church was built in the early 1950s[2], although the parish was founded in 1921.[3]
Eventual spree killer Charles Whitman attended the church with his family in the 1950s, serving as an altar boy, and fostered a close relationship with Fr. Joseph Leduc, which he maintained throughout his adult life.[4]. Whitman was confirmed at the church, where he adopted the confirmation name "Joseph" for himself.[5]
In October 2006, congressman Mark Foley tried to explain his responsibility in the on-going scandal by revealing that he had been abused as a teenager, while he was serving as an altar boy at the church.[6] Fr. Anthony Mercieca confessed to the abuse, but argued that it had been consensual.[7]
