The Britannica account is that he refused all financial help - except the Italian pension is mentioned. Other literary and biographical encyclopaedias do mention him refusing positions, but like the Italian Wikipedia article, have him being helped also by the Austrian government. Also some of them, for example this one, have him dying in Milan, not Nice, which does seem to accord better with his continuing to live frugally there; however, Italian Wikipedia like Britannica has him dying in Nice.
