About the school
History
Mountain View High School opened in 1979 as the second high school in the greater Bend, Oregon, area[2] It was the first new high school in the area since Bend High School opened in 1904, and the two schools remained the only traditional high schools in Bend until Summit High School opened in 2001[3] (John Marshall High School is a magnet high school also located in Bend). The school's first principal was Jack Harris; after his retirement in 1987, the school named the football stadium after him.[4] MVHS underwent major renovations in 2005 to expand the library and main offices.[5]
Fight Song
MVHS originally adopted Notre Dame University's fight song, but it is now based on that of Washington State University, whose mascot is also the cougar.
Interesting Facts
- One of the unique things about MVHS is that the halls and many classrooms are filled with painted ceiling tiles painted by former students.
- The school's colors are red and black.
- Until 1979, Bend had only one high school (Bend) and one junior high (Pilot Butte). That year, Mountain View High School and Cascade Junior High School both opened, but were situated on opposite sides of the city (Mountain View in the northeast, Cascade in the northwest). Due to the geography of the various schools, junior high school students in the east side of town attended Pilot Butte Junior High, while those on the west side attended Cascade Junior High. However, upon reaching high school, those students in the north attended Mountain View High School, while those in the south attended Bend High School. This resulted in students attending high school with half of the rival junior high, and having half of their former junior high classmates attending the rival high school. Although there are now three high schools in the area, Bend still splits its high school and junior high attendance maps unevenly, resulting in similar circumstances.
