Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (born October 13, 1989) is an American educator, political activist and politician. In 2018 Ocasio-Cortez entered the Democratic Party primary race for U.S. Representative for New York's 14th congressional district, and defeated 19-year incumbent Joseph Crowley.[1][2]
A member of Democratic Socialists of America [3] she was also endorsed by MoveOn.[4] and Justice Democrats.
Earlier life
Ocasio-Cortez was born in The Bronx, New York and moved to Yorktown, New York, at a young age. She later attended Boston University, during that time she interned in immigration office of US Senator Ted Kennedy. Her father died in 2008 during financial crisis. To help her mother, she worked as a food server. After she graduated from Boston University, she moved back to the Bronx and got a job as an educator in the nonprofit National Hispanic Institute.[5]
