Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, known in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX (遊☆戯☆王デュエル モンスターズGX Yūgiō Dyueru Monsutāzu GX) is an anime spinoff of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. A manga version made by Naoyuki Kageyama (影山なおゆき Kageyama Naoyuki) is published in Shueisha's V-Jump magazine in Japan.
In North America, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX is distributed by Warner Bros. Television Animation and 4Kids Entertainment. GX stands for Generation NeXt.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX starts out with the lead character Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki in the Japanese version) obtaining a card, Winged Kuriboh (Hane Kuribo), from Yugi Muto (Yugi Mutou in the English manga), the renowned Duel Monsters champion. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX follows the exploits of Jaden and another female character named Alexis Rhodes (Asuka Tenjouin) as Jaden goes to a dueling school named Duel Academy. The academy was created by Seto Kaiba on a remote island, with its dormitories named after the three Egyptian God Cards. In the chain of the Egyptian God Cards, the most elaborate dorm and the highest of the God Chain, Obelisk Blue (オベリスク・ブルー Oberisuku Burū), is named after the God Card Obelisk the Tormentor a.k.a. The God of Obelisk (Obelisk no Kyoshinhei (オベリスクの巨神兵), Giant Divine Soldier of Obelisk) Kaiba's card. The Obelisk Blue dorm can be graduated to, but the only way to enter the dorm from the first year is to attend and do well at the affiliated junior school. As the highest rank dorm, Obelisk Blue's dorm facilities are of the highest quality, on the level of the world's classiest hotels and restaurants. The center dorm and the middle of the God Chain, Ra Yellow (ラー・イェロー Rā Ierō), is named after The Winged Dragon of Ra a.k.a. Winged Divine Dragon of Ra (Rā no Yoku Shin Ryū (ラーの翼神竜), Marik Ishtar's card. Those who were given the highest scores in the entrance exam, or who only did mediocrely in the junior school enter this dorm, which while not quite as extravagant as Obelisk Blue's, still has incredibly clean and well-kept facilities and meals of a quality far above the lifestyle of the average salaryman. The lowest quality dorm, Slifer Red (Osiris Red, オシリス・レッド Oshirisu Reddo in the Japanese version), is named after Slifer the Sky Dragon a.k.a. Sky Dragon of Osiris (Osiris no Tenkūryū (オシリスの天空竜 in the Japanese version), Yugi's card. Those who failed completely or scored from low to lowest are given red suits to symbolize their low ranking in the God Chain and are given shoddy dorms. The naming choices reflect Kaiba's grudge against Yugi for losing to him. Produced by Nihon Ad Systems Inc., or NAS for short, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX started airing on TV Tokyo in Japan on October 6, 2004. The anime has been licensed by 4Kids Entertainment and is currently airing in North America at 5pm Eastern time on Cartoon Network's Miguzi block, in Canada on YTV on Fridays at 6pm, and in the UK on ITV2 on weekdays at 8am.

The Shadow Riders
The villains of the first semester who intended to revive the Sacred Beast Cards (Three Wicked Phantoms; 三幻魔 Sangenma). Known as the Seven Stars in the original version.
- Kagemaru (影丸) - The leader of the Shadow Riders and the former chairman of Duel Academy. Kagemaru hoped to attain eternal youth by sacrificing duel monster spirits to his Sacred Beasts. He uses a sacred beast deck.
- Fubuki Tenjouin (天上院 吹雪 Tenjōin Fubuki) / Atticus Rhodes - Alexis's older brother, who disappeared in a haunted dorm. Atticus resurfaced as Nightshroud (Darkness; ダークネス Dākunesu), the first Shadow Rider. Atticus, as Nightshroud, wore a dark dragon mask and was possessed by an evil persona. After he is set free, Atticus had almost no memory of what had transpired, but he managed to help Jaden by giving him the other half of the Shadow Charm in his possession. Over time, Atticus regained his memory and reverted to his old self, much to the annoyance of his sister, as he constantly tried to set her up with duelists, or to go into show business with him. As Nightshroud, his deck revolved around Red-Eyes Black Dragon. His own deck is an Idol deck. In the Japanese version, he often writes his last name as "10 Join."
- Camula (カミューラ Kamyūra) - A vampiress who is the second Shadow Rider. She is very serious when it comes to dueling, as she hoped to revive her race from its destruction by the people of Medieval Times. She captures the souls of her opponents following their losses within dolls to fuel her cause, playing her Shadow Game-exclusive "Illusion Gate" to ensure victory. Her deck theme reflected vampirism.
- Amazoness Tania (アマゾネス・タニヤ Amasonesu Taniya) - An amazoness who is the third Shadow Rider. She fell in love with Bastion, and after sweet talking as well as amazing dueling, defeated Bastion and made him her bridegroom. She has a pet tiger named Bass, and after Jaden defeats her, is revealed to be a white tiger herself. She used Amazoness Series cards in her two decks, Knowledge & Courage.
- Don Zaloog (首領-ザルーグ Shuryō Zarūgu) - The fourth Shadow Rider who is the leader of the band of thieves called the Dark Scorpion Gang. He is a sort of Robin Hood figure, as he steals from the rich and never hurts or kills anyone. He masquerades himself as a detective named Detective Zaloog (Keibu Manguer) set to help hide the actual keys while his posse work on taking the Spirit Keys incognito. After his defeat by Chazz, he and the rest of the Dark Scorpions faded away, leaving behind their cards. His deck revolved around the Dark Scorpion Gang.
- Abidos the Third (アビドス3世 Abidosu Sanse) - The fifth Shadow Rider. He is the spirit of an ancient pharaoh who never lost a single duel. Not realizing that he only kept winning because his opponents always lost on purpose, simply because he was pharaoh, Abidos joined the Shadow Riders to show off. It was later found out that he was undefeated simply because he was Pharaoh. His servants lost to him on purpose out of fear that he would kill them if they won. His deck was themed on servants of the Pharaoh.
- Titan (タイタン Taitan) - A hitman formerly hired by Crowler to deal with Jaden, Titan was the one who captured Alexis and forced Jaden to duel for her safety. Despite his reputation of possessing the power of a Millennium Item, the "Millennium Item" was a fake Millennium Puzzle, and Titan used various tricks to mimic a Shadow Game. Falling victim to a true Shadow Game, he was saved by Kagemaru, returned as the sixth Shadow Rider, and dueled Alexis. He uses an Archfiend series deck, which is later supported by Fiend's bullfighter cards. Ultimately, he was pulled back into the pits of darkness.
- Daitokuji (大徳寺) / Lyman Banner - The professor of the Slifer dorm. The "Banner" that Jaden, Syrus, and Chumley know is later revealed to be Amnael (アムナエル Amunaeru), the seventh and final Shadow Rider. He runs an alchemic deck, and is actually a Homunculus of his original self.

- Ryusei Gin (銀流星 Gin Ryūsei) - An assassin of the Society of Light and the champion of the Shooting Game. His deck revolves around B.E.S. monsters. His name is a pun - "gin" is silver, and "ryūsei" is meteor, or shooting star.
- X (エックス) - A top rank duelist of the Society of Light. He uses a deck destruction deck.
- Princess Rose (プリンセス・ローズ Purinsesu Rōzu) - Saiou's representative, who plays a frog deck.

- Kourimaru (氷丸 Kōrimaru) - An assassin employed by Mizuchi who is Ikazuchimaru's partner and a member of the Four Emperor duelists. Uses an Ice deck. (Each of the element-tei users' names are a hint as to what element they use - Kōri means ice)

- Seto Kaiba (海馬瀬人 Kaiba Seto) - A character from the original series who started Duel Academy. He appears in episode 35 in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX as only a silhouette standing in front of a bright window in his office. Trivia
- "GX" is short for the term "Generation neXt" obviously referring to the time of Duel Monsters' "Next Generation".
- The shift from the original series to GX is accompanied by the notion of modernization. Dueling technology has evolved, and cybernetics surface as a prevalent theme among monsters, either in totality (Cyber Dragons/Vehicroids), or enhancement through the addition of machinery (Cyber Girls/Dinosaurs/Tarot) to emphasize the replacement of the ancient with the futuristic.
- Chaos Emperor Dragon, similar to its counterpart in the actual card game, is banned in sanctioned tournaments in the anime.
