Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, known in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX (遊☆戯☆王デュエル モンスターズGX Yūgiō Dyueru Monsutāzu GX) is an anime spinoff of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. A manga version made by Naoyuki Kageyama (影山なおゆき Kageyama Naoyuki) is published in Shueisha's V-Jump magazine in Japan.
In North America, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX is distributed by Warner Bros. Television Animation and 4Kids Entertainment. GX stands for Generation NeXt.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX starts out with the lead character Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki in the Japanese version) obtaining a card, Winged Kuriboh (Hane Kuribo), from Yugi Muto (Yugi Mutou in the English manga), the renowned Duel Monsters champion. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX follows the exploits of Jaden and another female character named Alexis Rhodes (Asuka Tenjouin) as Jaden goes to a dueling school named Duel Academy. The academy was created by Seto Kaiba on a remote island, with its dormitories named after the three Egyptian God Cards. In the chain of the Egyptian God Cards, the most elaborate dorm and the highest of the God Chain, Obelisk Blue (オベリスク・ブルー Oberisuku Burū), is named after the God Card Obelisk the Tormentor a.k.a. The God of the Obelisk (Obelisk no Kyoshinhei (オベリスクの巨神兵), Kaiba's card. Those who earn the highest scores are sent to the Obelisk Blue dorm and wear blue suits to symbolize their highest ranking. The center dorm and the middle of the God Chain, Ra Yellow (ラー・イェロー Rā Yerō), is named after The Winged Dragon of Ra a.k.a. Sun Dragon Ra (Rā no Yoku Shin Ryū (ラーの翼神竜), Marik Ishtar's card. Those who were given regular or average scores are granted yellow suits to symbolize their middle ranking in the God Chain and are given dorms that are similar to Obelisk Blue's, but with less pleasantries. The lowest quality dorm, Slifer Red (Osiris Red, オシリス・レッド Oshirisu Reddo in the Japanese version), is named after Slifer the Sky Dragon (Osiris no Tenkūryū (オシリスの天空竜 in the Japanese version), Yugi's card. Those who failed completely or scored from low to lowest are given red suits to symbolize their low ranking in the God Chain and are given shoddy dorms. The naming choices reflect Kaiba's grudge against Yugi for losing to him. Produced by Nihon Ad Systems Inc., or NAS for short, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX started airing on TV Tokyo in Japan on October 6, 2004. The anime has been licensed by 4Kids Entertainment and is currently airing in North America at 5pm Eastern time on Cartoon Network's Miguzi block, it also airs in Canada on YTV on Fridays at 6pm.
Characters
Main characters
Names are in Western order, with the surname after the given name.
- Judai Yuki (遊城 十代 Yūki Jūdai) / Jaden Yuki - Jaden Yuki is the main character, who lives in the worst dormitory of Duel Academy, Slifer Red. 15-year old Jaden gets the rare Winged Kuriboh (Hane Kuribo, ハネクリボー Hane Kuribō) card, which becomes his spirit partner, from Yugi Muto (Yugi Mutou), the famous duelist from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series. In the first season, he plays an Elemental Hero deck, but by the second, he loses the ability to see his cards temporarily, and is given a Neos deck with cards he created when he was young.
- Asuka Tenjouin (天上院 明日香 Tenjōin Asuka) / Alexis Rhodes - 15-year old Alexis is a strong female duelist from the Obelisk Blue dormitory. Her family name in the Japanese version has been written as "Tenjoin", "Tenjouin", "Tenjyoin", and "10 Join" in Roman characters. Her deck is based on Cyber Girls. In the second season, she protects Obelisk Blue from being converted by the Society of Light, only to become one of its leading members herself.
- Sho Marufuji (丸藤 翔 Marufuji Shō) / Syrus Truesdale - 15-year old Syrus is the weaker younger brother of Zane Truesdale and a friend of Jaden's, and initially a student of Slifer Red. Syrus looks at Jaden as his older brother since (he feels) his true older brother Zane is ashamed of having a weakling for a brother (In the original anime, Ryo is less ashamed, and wishes for his brother to learn from his mistakes). He plays a Vehicroid deck, and advances to Ra Yellow in the second season.
- Ryo Marufuji (丸藤 亮 Marufuji Ryō) / Zane Truesdale - 17-year old Zane Truesdale is Syrus's stronger older brother. He is in the Obelisk Blue dorm. Nicknamed "Kaiser" (A German title meaning "emperor)", Zane is (at least his brother assumes) ashamed of having a weaker younger brother. In reality, he loves his younger brother, and only wants him to improve. Zane uses a deck that revolves around his Cyber Dragon and its incarnates. In the second season, he moves on to the Pro League, and takes on the dark persona of "Hell Kaiser."
- Jun Manjoume (万丈目 準 Manjōme Jun) / Chazz Princeton - 15-year old Chazz is another strong duelist from the Obelisk Blue dorm. Chazz uses several decks throughout the series, and greatly dislikes Jaden, though as the series continues, they come to a shakey truce. Chazz's family pressures him to do his best, as his two brothers are a famous businessman and a politician. Chazz, after losing to Bastion, left the school and later returned, only to be put in Silfer Red Dorm with Jaden. Chazz uses a rotating lineup of monsters, including Armed Dragon, Chthonian Soldier, and the VWXYZ series. He always uses the Ojama Trio in the later episodes as his trump cards, as they become his spirit partners. He has a crush on Alexis, and during the second season, becomes one of the leading members of the Society of Light whose mission is to convert Duel Academy.
- Cronos de Medici (クロノス・デ・メディチ Kuronos de Medichi) / Dr. Vellian Crowler - 35-year old Vellian Crowler is the leader of the Obelisk dorm. He holds a grudge against Jaden who he believes to be a slacker and tries to get rid of him on many occasions, but by the second season, protects Slifer Red from demolition multiple times. He uses an Ancient Gear series Deck.
- Daichi Misawa (三沢 大地 Misawa Daichi) / Bastion Misawa - An analytical 15-year old of Ra Yellow who uses seven different decks (Six elemental decks and one "Anti-Jaden" deck) to defeat his opponents. Bastion has a British accent in the dub. To date, he has used a water deck, and an earth deck based on Magnet Plus/Minus monsters.
- Hayato Maeda (前田 隼人 Maeda Hayato) / Chumley Huffington - Another one of Jaden's friends who is a student of Slifer Red, 16-year old Chumley has a face that resembles that of a koala. He uses a beast deck that focuses on Austrialian animals, and his father, Kumazo Huffington (Kumazo Maeda), is a famous duelist and owner of a successful hot sauce company (In the Japanese version he has a drinking problem involving sake). Towards the end of Duel Academy's first year, Chumley leaves the school to work with Maximillion Pegasus (Pegasus J. Crawford) as a card designer.
- Tyranno Kenzan (ティラノ剣山 Tirano Kenzan) - A new student of Duel Academy introduced in episode 53. He plays a dinosaur deck, and stays in the Slifer Red dorm despite being a duelist of Ra Yellow.
- Ed Phoenix (エド・フェニックス Edo Fenikkusu) - A Pro League duelist introduced in episode 53 with a troubled past. Ed's main deck, like Jaden's, is a hero series, but is different as he also uses Destiny Heroes.
Other characters

The Shadow Riders
The villains of the first semester who intended to revive the Sacred Beast Cards (original version 三幻魔, Sangenma, Three Wicked Phantoms). They were known as the "Seven Stars Assassins" in the original version.
- Kagemaru (影丸) - The leader of the Shadow Riders and the former chairman of Duel Academy. Kagemaru hoped to attain eternal youth by sacrificing duel monster spirits to his Sacred Beasts. He uses a sacred beast deck.
- Fubuki Tenjouin (天上院 吹雪 Tenjōin Fubuki) / Atticus Rhodes - Alexis's older brother, who disappeared in a haunted dorm. Atticus resurfaced as Nightshroud (Darkness ダークネス Dākunesu), the first Shadow Rider. Atticus, as Nightshroud, wore a dark dragon mask and was possesed by an evil persona. After he is set free, Atticus had almost no memory of what had transpired, but he managed to help Jaden by giving him the other half of the Shadow Charm in his possession. Over time, Atticus regained his memory and reverted to his old self, much to the annoyance of his sister, as he constantly tried to set her up with duelists, or to go into show business with him. As Nightshroud, his deck revolved around Red-Eyes Black Dragon. His own deck is an Idol deck. In the Japanese version, he often writes his last name as "10 Join."
- Camula (カミューラ Kamyūra) - A vampiress who is the second Shadow Rider. She is very serious when it comes to dueling, as she hoped to revive her race from its destruction by the people of Medieval Times. She captures the souls of her opponents following their losses within dolls to fuel her cause, playing her Shadow Game-exclusive "Illusion Gate" to ensure victory. Her deck theme reflected vampirism.
- Amazoness Tania (アマゾネス・タニヤ Amasonesu Taniya) - An amazoness who is the third Shadow Rider. She fell in love with Bastion, and after sweet talking as well as amazing dueling, defeated Bastion and made him her bridegroom. She has a pet tiger named Bass, and after Jaden defeats her, is revealed to be a white tiger herself. She used Amazoness Series cards in her two decks, Knowledge & Courage.
- Don Zaloog (首領-ザルーグ Shuryō Zarūgu) - The fourth Shadow Rider who is the leader of the band of thieves called the Dark Scorpion Gang. He is a sort of Robin Hood figure, as he steals from the rich and never hurts or kills anyone. He masquerades himself as a detective named Detective Zaloog (Keibu Manguer) set to help hide the actual keys while his posse work on taking the Spirit Keys incognito. After his defeat by Chazz, he and the rest of the Dark Scorpions faded away, leaving behind their cards. His deck revolved around the Dark Scorpion Gang.
- Abidos the Third (アビドス3世 Abidosu Sanse) - The fifth Shadow Rider. He is the spirit of an ancient pharaoh who never lost a single duel. Realizing that he only kept winning because his opponents always lost on purpose, simply because he was pharaoh, Abidos joined the Shadow Riders to show off. It was later found out that he was undefeated simply because he was pharaoh. His servants lost to him on purpose out of fear that he would kill them if they won. His deck was themed on servants of the pharaoh.
- Titan (タイタン Taitan) - A hitman formerly hired by Crowler to deal with Jaden, Titan was the one who captured Alexis and forced Jaden to duel for her safety. Despite his reputation of possessing the power of a Millennium Item, the "Millennium Item" was a fake Millennium Puzzle, and Titan used various tricks to mimic a Shadow Game. Falling victim to a true Shadow Game, he was saved by Kagemaru, returned as the sixth Shadow Rider, and dueled Alexis. He uses an Archfiend series deck, which is later supported by Fiend's bullfighter cards. Ultimately, he was pulled back into the pits of darkness.
- Daitokuji (大徳寺) / Lyman Banner - The professor of the Slifer dorm. The "Banner" that Jaden, Syrus, and Chumley know is later revealed to be Amnael (アムナエル Amunaeru), the seventh and final Shadow Rider. He runs an alchemic deck, and is actually a Homunculus of his original self.
Society of Light
The villians of the 2nd semester that wish to take over Duel Academy.
- Takuma Saiou (斎王琢磨 Saiō Takuma) - A mysterious duelist who is leader of the Society of Light. He uses a Tarot deck.
- Ryusei Gin (銀流星 Gin Ryūsei) - An assassin of the Society of Light and the champion of the Shooting Game. His deck revolves around B.E.S. monsters.
- X (エックス) - A top rank duelist of the Society of Light. He uses a deck destruction deck.
- Princess Rose (プリンセス・ローズ Purinsesu Rōzu) - Saiou's representative, who plays a frog deck.
- Ikazuchimaru (雷丸) - An assassin employed by Mizuchi who is Kourimaru's partner and a member of the Four Emperor (四帝 Yon Tei) duelists. Uses a Thunder deck.
- Kourimaru (氷丸 Kōrimaru) - An assassin employed by Mizuchi who is Ikazuchimaru's partner and a member of the Four Emperor duelists. Uses an Ice deck.
- Honoumaru (火丸 Honōmaru) - An assassin employed by Mizuchi who is a member of the Four Emperor duelists. Along with Iwamaru, the two fled Mizuchi's lair when she threatened to seal them within mirrors.
- Iwamaru (岩丸) - An assassin employed by Mizuchi who is a member of the Four Emperor duelists. Along with Honoumaru, the two fled Mizuchi's lair when she threatened to seal them within mirrors.
- Mizuchi Saiou (斎王美寿知 Saiō Mizuchi) - The younger sister of Saiou who challenged both Jaden and Ed to a tag-duel in KaibaLand's virtual world.
Characters from the original series
- Yugi Mutou / Yugi Muto (武藤遊戯 Mutō Yūgi) - The protagonist of the original series who gives Jaden the Winged Kuriboh card. Yugi has grown up a bit since the original series and has turned out a lot like Atem in height and in voice (only in the dub), even though his face is not visible in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
- Seto Kaiba (海馬瀬人 Kaiba Seto) - A character from the original series who started Duel Academy. He appears in episode 35 in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX as only a silhouette standing in front of a bright window in his office. - Mokuba Kaiba (海馬 モクバ Kaiba Mokuba) - He appears in episode 62 in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX in Jaden's flashback.
- Meikyū Brothers (迷宮 Meikyū) / Paradox Brothers - Twin brothers that dueled Yugi and Joey Wheeler (Katsuya Jonouchi in the original manga and anime series. In Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, the brothers appear in episodes 10 and 11 as Jaden and Syrus' tag-duel opponents.

- Sugoroku Mutou (武藤 双六 Mutō Sugoroku) / Solomon Muto - Glimpsed from the waist down in episode 49 during a cut scene in his game shop during Jaden's duel with Kagemaru.
