List of characters, with biographical details, from the HBO series True Blood and the Charlaine Harris novel series it was based on.
Sookie Stackhouse
- Anna Paquin potrays Sookie Stackhouse in True Blood
Sookie's telepathic powers manifest as a child, and her parents initially consider her to be mentally ill, going so far as taking her to a psychologist and "having her brain scanned every other month". However, Sookie mentions one incident when her father asked her to "listen" in on a business meeting to discern the true intentions of a potential client. She told her father the man intended to take his money and her father took her advice, indicating his unspoken belief in her telepathic ability. Her parents die in a flood when she was seven years old, leaving her and her older brother Jason Stackhouse to be raised by their grandmother.
Sookie Stackhouse is in love with Bill Compton and chose him for her first sexual encounter (Sookie's telepathic abilities had caused her to abstain from romantic relationships).
Sam Merlotte
- Sam Trammel portrays Sam Merlotte in True Blood
Sam Merlotte is a character from the The Southern Vampire Mysteries book series by author Charlaine Harris. Sam is the owner and operator of Merlotte's, the bar where telepath Sookie Stackhouse works as a barmaid. He is described as being a small man(around Sookie's height) with reddish-blond hair and a fair boss.
Sam is also a shapeshifter. His preferred shape is that of a collie, although he can essentially change into any animal he sees. On nights when the moon is full, Sam -like all shapeshifters- feels a strong urge to change, the rest of the time he can do it at will.
In True Blood, an HBO series based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries, this character is played by American actor Sam Trammell.[1]
Relationships
Sookie Stackhouse -- Sam has expressed his interest in Sookie and has kissed her on more than one occasion, but the two have never actually dated. He remains her good friend and supporter, however, often covering for Sookie when she misses work due to vampire business.
Callisto -- a maenad who briefly drifts through Sookie's hometown (and later attacks Sookie). Sam engages in a sexual relationship with her, which ends with Callisto's departure.
Tara Thornton -- On the television series, he and Tara engage in a brief sexual relationship that ends when Maryann arrives in Bon Temps.
Bill Compton
Bill's full name is William Thomas Compton and was supposed to have been born in Louisiana in approx. 1835 and served in the 28th Louisiana infantry in the civil war. On his way home from the war in 1865 he is "made" a vampire.
Approximately 150 years later (two years after vampires have "come out of the coffin" thanks to Japanese synthetic blood) he returns to Bon Temps upon the death of "old Jesse" Compton. Jesse Compton had no heirs so the ownership of the old family home will "revert” back to him if the Vampire Rights Act is passed. It is possible that old Jesse Compton was Bill's great-grandson. In the novels, it is revealed that the Bellefleur family is also related to Bill.
Relationships
He left a wife, daughter and a son in Bon Temps, Louisiana.
He was made vampire after the Civil War by the vampire Lorena (name not given in the television series).
He has an intense romantic and sexual relationship with Sookie Stackhouse. In the novels, this relationship eventually fails, but Bill remains in love with her and determined to win her back.
Eric Northman
He is the Sheriff of what is called "Area 5," and owns the vampire bar Fangtasia in Shreveport. As sheriff, he is Bill Compton's boss.
Eric harbors very a strong physical attraction to Sookie, in part because of her fairy blood.
After being attacked by a clan of witches, Eric temporarily loses his memory and ends up spending a few days hiding at Sookie's house. During this time, he sleeps with Sookie, but when his memory is eventually restored he has lost all recollection of the time he spends living at her house. Sookie is perfectly happy with this, because she doesn't want him to have power over her, but she is eventually coerced into telling him anyway, and later he remembers on his own.
During his time with Sookie, he confesses his love for her and offers to give up everything to stay by her side. When he regains his memories, he becomes very confused about his emotions towards Sookie, especially while he doesn't remember what had happened during those three eventful days. This distinctly bothers him. Eric likes to have control over situations.
Pam
She is Eric's second-in-command. Physically, Pam is described as having a preference for pastels and light colors, and is said to look rather like Alice from Alice in Wonderland. She is originally from England, and at times of stress will sometimes speak with an accent.
