Alvin and the Chipmunks is a live-action/computer-animated film, based on the popular musical group Alvin and the Chipmunks (and, in several ways, the animated series of the same name). It is directed by Tim Hill and produced by Bagdasarian Productions, New Regency Productions, and 20th Century Fox.
The film was released in the United States, Canada, Iceland, and Romania on December 14, 2007. It will be released in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2007 and in Australia on January 3, 2008.[1]
Plot
The story begins when struggling songwriter, Dave Seville (Jason Lee) gets his world turned upside-down by getting fired by Jett Records then meeting a trio of talking and singing chipmunks formed by Alvin (voiced by Justin Long), Simon (voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler), and Theodore (voiced by Jesse McCartney), who soon become instant stars. When Ian Hawke (David Cross), CEO of Jett Records and Dave's former college classmate sees the boys as nothing more than a gimmick to make a quick buck and coerces them with promises of superstardom and perks, their relationship with Dave becomes strained and tested. In the end, however, the Chipmunks decide to desert Ian Hawke and return to Dave.
Cast
- Jason Lee as David "Dave" Seville: a bad-tempered rock music maker
- Justin Long as Alvin Seville (voice): the leader of the chipmunks, wears red
- Matthew Gray Gubler as Simon Seville (voice): the brain of the chipmunks, wears glasses and blue
- Jesse McCartney as Theodore Seville (voice): the chubby shiest of the chipmunks, wears green
- David Cross as Ian Hawke, the music producer and main villain of the film
- Cameron Richardson as Claire Hanson, Dave's crush
- Jane Lynch as Gail
- Celestina as Witch Doctor Back-Up Singer
- Kevin Symons as Ted

Critical reception
The film received generally negative reviews from critics. As of December 14, 2007 on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 26% of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 62 reviews.[2] On Metacritic, the film had an average score of 40 out of 100, based on 15 reviews.[3] Most of the negative criticism is because of the Chipmunks voice pitch.
Box office performance
Despite negative critical reception, Calvin and the Chipmunks was released in the United States and Canada on December 14, 2007 and grossed $44.3 million in 3,475 theaters its opening weekend, placing #2 at the box office.[4]
Soundtrack
The soundtrack was released November 20, 2007, three weeks before the film's opening and contains new versions of most Chipmunk songs.
