Kiran Choudhary (born 5 June 1955) is an Indian politician from the state of Haryana. She is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party since June, 2024.[2] She is an MLA from Tosham assembly constituency in Bhiwani district. Previously, she was a member of the Congress party in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha.[3][4]
She comes from a prominent political family of Haryana and has been a five-time MLA from Tosham, Bhiwani since 2005.[2] Her father-in-law, Bansi Lal was a three-time Chief Minister of Haryana and among the most influential leaders of the state.[5]
Political Career
Choudhry entered Haryana electoral politics following the death of her husband and Bansi Lal’s son, Surender Singh, in 2005.[6] Choudhry became known as the daughter-in-law of former Haryana CM Bansi Lal, and first got elected as an MLA from Tosham (Bhiwani) in 2005, and has been a sitting MLA from Tosham (Bhiwani) since then.[7]
In June 2024, she and her daughter, Shruti Choudhry, quit the Congress party due to differences with the party leader and ex-Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.[5] The differences had heightened during the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, when the Congress fielded a Hooda loyalist, Rao Dan Singh, instead of Choudhry's daughter, Shruti Choudhry, a former MP from the Bhiwani-Mahendragarh parliamentary seat. [6]. Subsequently, both of them joined the BJP on June 19, 2024, in the presence of former CM Manohar Lal Khattar.[2] After joining the BJP, Choudhry claimed she was inspired by Prime Minister Modi's vision to develop India by 2047, especially with the formation of a BJP-led central government for the third time.[8]
There were mixed reactions to her leaving the Congress party, wherein senior Congress MP Selja Kumari expressed regret over Choudhry's leaving and called it a loss for the party.[8] The Hisar Congress MP Jai Prakash attacked Choudhry and asserted that since, in a patriarchal society, women are not considered political heirs, and therefore Kiran Choudhry cannot represent the political legacy of her father-in-law, Bansi Lal.[9] Choudhry responded that Jai Prakash's remark reflected an "anti-daughter mindset", while Kumari Selja opposed Prakash's remark noting that some leaders still had a "patriarchal mindset".[10]
