DescriptionA memorial to the Abbe de la Caille, at Aurora in the Western Cape of South Africa.JPG
English: The English portion of the inscription reads: "This is the site of the Maclear Beacon positioned in 1838 near the original North Terminal of the Arc of Meridian positioned by Abbe de la Caille, the first surveyor to introduce Geodetic Surveying into South Africa."
Afrikaans: The Afrikaans portion of the memorial reads:
This conveys slightly different information to the English portion. A liberal translation into English would be: "Here is the site of Sir Thomas Maclear's northern terminal of an arc [of] longitude surveying the true shape of the Earth. The site was visited in 1838 to [confirm] similar surveys [in the area] in 1752 by Abbe de la Caille. This was the first geodetic survey [done] in South Africa." The location of the memorial is shown in another image File:Location of memorial to Abbe de la Caille at Aurora.JPG
