The Puppet Showplace ...
Mission
The Puppet Showplace is located at 32 Station Street in Brookline Village, a stately brick building listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Its mission is to promote and present the world of puppet theatre to a broad community; to educate and enlighten audiences of all ages, abilities and backgrounds about this ancient, worldwide theatre; to share a passion for puppetry as a vital, living art. The Puppet Showplace is also the home of BAGOP (the Boston Area Guild of Puppetry, the largest regional guild in the Puppeteers of America), and the two share a fruitful relationship and interest in promoting the art of puppetry.
History
The Puppet Showplace Theatre was founded on June 2, 1974 by teacher and puppeteer Mary Putnam Churchill. She originally intended to perform mainly her own puppet shows, but the storefront theater soon attracted other local puppeteers, and Mary Churchill began to include the best shows of these new friends. Audiences grew, and in 1980 the theater moved next door, into two storefronts. It remains in the same premises to this day.
