Finding a source
- Tips for finding a source yourself
- Send a request to the author(s) of research papers for a copy of their paper by email
- Check on Google Books, or your local library or national library may be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan or subscription
- Search Google Scholar for archived copies of journals in institutional repositories
- Check whether your alma mater's library offers electronic document delivery services for alumni—many do, for a small fee
Note that sites like LibGen and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a very large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Wikipedia community endorses them.
- Making a request
- A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work
- All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
- We cannot perform full book scans requests due to copyright
- You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page
- To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences
- Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN ISSN, PMID, etc.
- Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
- Filled requests are archived.
- Requests unfilled after three months will be archived

Fulfilling a request
- Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
- Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
- Notify (mention) the requester using
{{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}
- You can point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... ). You can share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal, or by emailing the content to the requester.
- You can email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.
Copyright tips:
- Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
- Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Wikipedia. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Wikipedia and/or to improve Wikipedia content.
- Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.
- Remember that you take on the individual risk when sharing content, and act in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. Individual editors are solely responsible for sharing copyrighted content and assume all legal risks.

- Doing... #2, #3, — Pajz (talk) 05:50, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- Vmavanti, as to #3, the volume has no annual index, and the individual issues, too, do not include a detailed table of contents (e.g., they don't mention reviews). Unfortunately, I do not have the time to search the entire volume. Regarding #2, there is a sentence in an untitled, as far as I can see, editorial section in the June issue, page 24, that says: "Teddy Norman's crooning on the icky “One Love" is pure dross, but thrush Chris Adams’ saucy innocence on “I’m a Big Girl Now’ (2 parts) is winning; she and McKinley address a tragic postwar shortage in “Have You Got Any Gum Chum?”". As best as I can tell, no other page 24 of any 1988 issue contains any mention of the song title. I'm not sure what the point of this reference is anyway; the fact that "Have Ya Got Any Gum, Chum?" comes from the phrase "Got Any Gum, Chum?" appears entirely trivial and the less obvious remainder of the sentence is already sourced. — Pajz (talk) 15:04, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

- They can't access full books of all material (been there), hence my question. They can access some of the material if it is considered out-of-print and meets some additional criteria. I infer from your response that you don't know if this book qualifies. Well, I suppose you can wait for someone from a partner institution to check the status of this particular book. It remains doubtful if someone can legally provide you with the entire book, though. There's no real reason why the restriction "We cannot perform full book scans requests due to copyright" wouldn't apply here; the rightsholder didn't make the material available, so the (U.S.) user would have to abide by the requirements of the fair use defense. — Pajz (talk) 06:21, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

- LeadSongDog, thanks, though I suppose the problem is not so much finding someone with access to a copy of the book as it is scanning the entire volume of 102 pages (Winged Blades of Godric seems to request the entire volume). That would obviously be at odds with the general rule here that "[w]e cannot perform full book scans requests due to copyright". — Pajz (talk) 06:00, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
- For most article development, simply scanning the contents and index is half the battle. Editors such as WBG can assess those and request a second scan of a few useful pages for material of particular interest. LeadSongDog come howl! 14:35, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
- LeadSongDog, well, if he wants that, he can request it (I wouldn't mind supplying it). I just meant to point out a practical issue with the request as it stands. — Pajz (talk) 19:44, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Proceedings of the International Association of Engineering Geology re the 1556 Shaanxi earthquake.
Does anyone have access to the Proceedings of the 5th International Congress of the International Association of Engineering Geology? It has been cited in various places (including our own 1556 Shaanxi earthquake) for the 1556 Shaanxi (Huaxian) earthquake having 830,000 fatalities, but I began to doubt, and am unable to verify. Item has an ISBN of 90-6191-664-X. It might be available at the IAEG home page, but only to members.
Alternately, is there anyone interested in researching some articles in Chinese? ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 00:40, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
- For anyone else working on this request, I think it might be in the 6th conference proceedings, not the 5th. The reference in 1556 Shaanxi earthquake cites the proceedings from 1990, which would be the 6th conference. The 5th was in 1986. I checked the table of contents for all three volumes of the 5th just in case, and I couldn't find anything about Shaanxi. Unfortunately, these are the only proceedings I have access to. Mcampany (talk) 04:01, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
- I have a source that states the 5th congress, volume 4, with 1990 when the Proceedings were published of the Congress held October 1986 in Buenos Aires. Also, ISBN 90-6191-664-X may be invalid; see also ISBN 978-906191664-2. ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 22:16, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

- Vmavanti, regarding #3, I checked the tables of contents of all 1985 issues (bound in two volumes, ~ 15cm thick) and could not find anything. There were non-descriptive titles, which I did not have time to investigate further, the whole endeavour already took 10-15 minutes. On a more general note, I do not intend to act on similar requests going forward; the cost-benefit ratio just doesn't seem right. Not to criticise you--I understand you can only work from what is provided in the articles--just a bit of general feedback on this type of requests. Best, — Pajz (talk) 19:14, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
- OK, then I apologize. I guess I'm not clear enough on how this process works. Thank you to everyone who has helped. If there's a thorny problem with an article, trying to find something like a citation without a title, one that is especially obscure or in a foreign language, to whom can I request help?

- Vmavanti, well, there's nothing to apologise for, really, and I also believe this is the proper page for such requests. I'm just pointing out some practical difficulties with them. You can't really know that before you hold the volume in your hands. Sometimes there is an annual table of contents (the likelier the more journal-esque the periodical), which helps locate articles where you only know the author. Sometimes there are few issues and the issues have tables of contents that are very clear, which may also enable one to retrieve the article rather quickly. I'm just saying that there are also instances where that is not the case, and I think it makes sense in these cases to indicate that it's too difficult instead of either leaving the request here untouched (so someone else will have the same experience) or spending an extraordinary amount of time on it. Just my two cents. — Pajz (talk) 22:22, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

- As an aside, in case you have to deal with this again, it's likely that many music articles simply bear the titles of the album or person they are discussing. So if a person asks, "What's the title of that review of Kind of Blue? it will sometimes simply be "Kind of Blue". Or "Miles Davis: Kind of Blue".

Looking for review of Sexual Preference
Hello, I am looking for a review of Sexual Preference. The review is by Robert Herron, it was published in Christopher Street magazine's December 1981 issue, Vol. 5 Issue 11. Based on information from EBSCO, it appears to be on pages 55 through 57 of the issue. The ISSN is ISSN 0146-7921 and the Accession Number is 9357026. Note that while the review is listed on EBSCO, EBSCO does not provide the actual text of the review, otherwise I wouldn't be making this request. The Voice/Florida Catholic (newsletter of the Catholic diocese of Miami): Primum Regnum Dei recipient lists
Hi, I'm trying to determine whether Jim Towey, a Florida politician, was a recipient of the Catholic archdiocese of Miami's Primum Regnum Dei award, granted in honour of the late Archbishop Coleman Carroll. (According to various non-reliable sources, he received the 'Archbishop John Carroll' award or the 'Regnum Dei' award from the archdiocese, neither of which appears to have ever been given to anyone else.) I'd also like to track down when and where he received the papal cross.
The diocesan newsletter (called The Voice prior to 1990, the Florida Catholic afterwards) seems to have published yearly lists of the recipients of both the PRD and the Papal Cross. I'm looking for any archived copies of the newsletter from between 1991 and 2003; so far, I've only been able to find ones published before 1991 or after 2009. I'd particularly like to see the April and September 2000 issues, as these are when two different sources say he was given the Papal Cross.
Cheers, Genericusername57 (talk) 21:08, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

- The Jacksonville public library has copies from 2000 and 2003 [6]
- The Barry University library has microfilm up to 1996, physical copies from 1998 on [7].
It seems also that the Florida Catholic had different editions for the different regions of Florida; I think that the Miami edition is most likely to bear fruit. Genericusername57 (talk) 01:37, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
I've found three different obituaries that mention people being awarded the medal on December 8, 1992; but it seems that more recently it's been given out in late September/early October. Someone else received one on October 4, 1998. Genericusername57 (talk) 02:41, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Genericusername57: Our volunteers may surprise me, but I'm not aware of any of the regulars being in Florida or near the other libraries with holdings. Consider trying the The Florida Catholic's article search service. It's free if the search is easy (which it probably would be if he received the award). They'll quote you a price if it looks like it will take substantial research (which it probably would to prove a negative). --Worldbruce (talk) 17:52, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you, I put a request in there last week, and haven't heard anything back yet--so I thought I might as well ask here as well, even though it's a fairly long shot. If that request pans out, I'll take this one down. Cheers, Genericusername57 (talk) 12:18, 22 October 2018 (UTC)
- The Florida Catholic archival staff sent me lists of Oct. 1998 PRD recipients and Nov. 2000 Pro Pontifice papal cross recipients. Towey wasn't on either, so I've asked them to take another look. Cheers, Genericusername57 (talk) 23:53, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- Another update: The Florida Catholic staff sent me a few dozen articles related to Towey. He received the St. Vincent de Paul award in 1999 and the papal cross in September 2000. I still haven't found anything about his receiving the Carroll/Regnum Dei/PRD, though. Cheers, Genericusername57 (talk) 00:39, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

- Rourke, J.P. (1969). "Taxonomic Studies on Sorocephalus R.Br. and Spatalla salisb". Journal of South African Botany. 7 (Supplementary).
- Williams, I.J.M. (1972). "A Revision of the Genus Leucadendron (Proteaceae)". Contributions from the Bolus Herbarium. 3.
For Paranomus, Sorocephalus, Spatalla, Leucadendron and their species.
Thanks in advance, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 21:17, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Dwergenpaartje, #3 has 425 pages, #1 another 70. You're asking for scans of entire volumes, which goes against the instructions at the top of this page ("We cannot perform full book scans"). If you need something specific, please narrow down the request accordingly. The same seems to be true for #2 (124 pages per http://gateway-bayern.de/BV026864581). — Pajz (talk) 21:31, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Ah, yes, I am aware of the size of these publications. I tried to buy #1 and #3 from the publishing institute, but they do not reply to mail. In the end, I will work through the entire publications, though I do not need the literature lists at the end. Working through the 288 pages of TAXONOMIC STUDIES ON LEUCOSPERMUM R. BR. by JOHN PATRICK ROURKE (which is on-line) took me half a year, but resulted in 49 new or very much extended articles. I understand it is a lot of boring work to scan many pages. I do not know what people can get their hands on, so I asked for three publications this time. One of them in monthly portions of 25 pages or so would be as much as I can digest. Does this make the request do-able? Thanks for your patience. Dwergenpaartje (talk) 22:45, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Well, as far as I'm concerned, I couldn't fill it even if I wanted because #1 and #3 are still offered by the publisher and the making of full copies therefore does not qualify as a permissible "private copy" pursuant to the copyright law of my country of residence. Similarly, US and UK users typically cannot justify the making and providing of copies of whole books under applicable fair use/fair dealing provisions. (That is also the reason behind the "We cannot perform full book scans requests due to copyright" notice at the top.) Besides, to be frank, I personally wouldn't scan 425 pages even if I were allowed to -- too time-consuming. And while #2 is perhaps out of print, I personally cannot help with that either as it is unfortunately held in an institutional library that I do not frequent. — Pajz (talk) 23:29, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for explaining the legal restrictions, that is good to be aware of. Perhaps it would be possible for #1 and/or #3 to send me the pages with the tables of contents. That would give me the possibility to determine what I would need for any particular wiki article. Thank you for understanding. Dwergenpaartje (talk) 09:28, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

Looking for reviews of Freud and Philosophy
Hello, I am looking for the reviews of Paul Ricoeur's Freud and Philosophy that appeared in the American Journal of Psychiatry, the International Philosophical Quarterly, and the Psychoanalytic Quarterly. Unfortunately I do not know the specific issues in which the reviews were published. If possible, I'd appreciate the text of these reviews, but even information such as the issue and volume numbers in which they appeared would be extremely helpful.
Thanks, FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 00:34, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
- @FreeKnowledgeCreator: Most bibliographic information for the first two is readily available from the publisher's website:
- "Book Reviews: Freud and Philosophy". The American Journal of Psychiatry. 127 (7): 978-. January 1971. doi:10.1176/ajp.127.7.978.
- Ihde, Don (March 1972). "Briefer Book Reviews: Freud and Philosophy". International Philosophical Quarterly. 12 (2): 138–139. doi:10.5840/ipq197212123.
- "?". The Psychoanalytic Quarterly. ? (?).
- Since they have dois, someone here should be able to supply the first two. The third seems to have been digitized only back to 1990, so it may prove more difficult. --Worldbruce (talk) 01:22, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Worldbruce: I have digital access to the first and can email that to you. I have physical access to the second and third, but for various bureaucratic and personal reasons, won't be able to get them until I return in January. With regards to the third, I have physical access to the Psychoanalytic Quarterly from 1932 onward, so do you have a more specific period in which to search? I assume the 1970s, but any additional bibliographic information would help. Wugapodes [thɑk] [ˈkan.ˌʧɹɪbz] 06:00, 12 December 2018 (UTC) Oops, pinged the wrong person. Let's try again: @FreeKnowledgeCreator: Wugapodes [thɑk] [ˈkan.ˌʧɹɪbz] 06:01, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
- Freud and Philosophy was first published in English in 1970, so the Psychoanalytic Quarterly review would likely have been published early in the 1970s. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 08:15, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
- @FreeKnowledgeCreator: sent first two. --Worldbruce (talk) 00:38, 16 December 2018 (UTC)
