Revision as of 02:59, 10 April 2008
The University of British Columbia's class SPAN312 ("Murder, Madness, and Mayhem: Latin American Literature in Translation") is contributing to Wikipedia during Spring 2008. Our collective goals are to bring a selection of articles on Latin American literature to featured article status (or as near as possible) by 10 April 2008.
We have the generous support of the (in)famous FA-Team, who have taken this on as their first mission. We have also been fortunate to have the support of members of Novels Wikiproject. The collaboration of other interested Wikipedia editors would of course be very much appreciated.
To discuss this project, please do so here. You may also be interested in this essay about the experience.
And
to see the most recent changes to all articles related to the project.Goals
- To improve Wikipedia's coverage of selected articles on Latin American literature, particularly those related to dictator novels.
- To submit these articles to Wikipedia review processes, such as peer review, good article nominations and featured article candidates.
- To increase the number of featured articles in this area.

Stages
These seem to me the stages we need to pass through:
Start. Get familiar with wikipedia. Make some trial edits, however minor. Demystify the process. Leave behind any sense of intimidation. As wikipedia puts its, learn to be bold. Learn basic editing skllls. By now (January 5), everyone should have made at least one edit.
- Plan. But minor edits alone won't get us much closer towards Feature Article status. We need to have a sense of what more needs to be done, and an overall plan for the article. Look at models and guidelines (e.g. guidelines for articles about novels) on how to write good and feature articles. What sections are required? What will be the article structure? What information is needed? By Spring Break (February 15), each group should have their plan in place. It would be useful to put details on article talk pages.
- Share. We will need to divide up the tasks that we've identified in the planning stage. Who is going to do what and when?
- Research. This is vital. A wikipedia article is worth nothing unless it comprises verified research, appropriated referenced. This will entail going to the library, as well as surfing the internet!
- Assemble and copy-edit. As the referenced research is added to an article, we need to ensure that it does not become baggy and disorganized, though there will be moments when it is obviously in a transitional stage.
- Informal Review. First, informal reviews among ourselves and consultation with members of the FA-Team.
- Good article nomination. Ideally by March 22 (perhaps March 29 at the latest?), if we are going to submit subsequently to Feature Article review, as there's a backlog of articles to be reviewed, and because a nomination can easily be put on hold until the article is improved in line with a reviewer's suggestions.
- Further Informal Review.
- Feature article nomination. By April 10.
The above could probably be refined. (Be bold and do change it!) And of course, there's no precise order for everything. There's always the need for small, incremental change. But over the course of the project we're looking for radical change, in some cases seeking to create a feature article from scratch. So we need also to be methodical.
And it may turn out that not all articles will be submitted to Feature Article Review. But this should still be our goal!
NB see also what wikipedia has to say about article development.
- Talk pages
Whenever you edit, make sure that you are signed in. Also, add four tildes ~~~~ to the end of all comments you make on talk pages. This will let people know who is talking.
Style guides
To get past the stumbling blocks of GA and FA, articles will have to conform to the Wikipedia style guides. The three largest barriers are:
- Wikipedia:Layout – this guide describes heading and sub-headings.
- Wikipedia:Lead section – the all important abstract at the head of an article.
- Wikipedia:Manual of Style – the collection of rules.
Secondary style guide are specific to different projects. Articles must conform to these also. Conflict between any of these is inevitable and troublesome; editors simply have to work out conflicts through consensus.
- Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction) - collection of rules for fiction.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Style guidelines – mostly lay out issues for articles on novels.
The simplest way to understand the various style guides is to examine articles that have passed GA or FA. Here is a recently promoted Featured article of a novelist: Chinua Achebe

Progress
Progress Report and to-do (March 31, 2008)
With ten days left, here's a progress report and to-do list for each article:
- Domingo Faustino Sarmiento: 126 edits, three active group members. Remains at B-class, but now in Good Article Nomination, congratulations! There has been a lot of work on this, most recently by members of the FA-Team. What's to be done is summarized in the reviewer's comments and extensive notes on the talk page.
- Miguel Ángel Asturias: 44 edits, one active group member (of two). Remains at B-class, and still in Good Article Nomination. This article has been somewhat in the doldrums, but a new review indicates what still has to be done.
- Augusto Roa Bastos: 107 edits, two active group members (of two). Now at B-class, congratulations! More sourced content still required.
- Gabriel García Márquez: 282 edits, three active group members. Now a Good Article, many congratulations! A huge effort has been put into this article. Now under peer review. The lead could be improved, and some sections (e.g. "More on Style and Themes") fleshed out, but mostly what's required is a question of style and copy-editing.
- Mario Vargas Llosa: 81 edits, one active group member (of three). Now a Good Article, many congratulations! The pace has slowed on this article, but a good indication of what's to be done can be found at peer review and on the article talk page.
- Facundo: 251 edits, three active group members. Remains at B-class, but now in Good Article Nomination, congratulations! There's been a lot of work on this article. Strong on sources, but needs quite extensive clean-up for style and flow.
- El Señor Presidente: 190 edits, two active group members (of three). Remains a Good Article. On the verge of Featured Article Candidacy.
- I, the Supreme: 45 edits, one active group member (of three). Remains at B-class, but now in Good Article Nomination, congratulations! The pace has slowed on this article, but what's to be done is summarized in the reviewer's comments.
- The General in His Labyrinth: 115 edits, three active group members. Now a Good Article, many congratulations! A good indication of what's to be done can be found at peer review
- The Feast of the Goat: 92 edits, three active group members. Now a B-class article, congratulations! The lead and characters need to be fleshed out, plus there are a couple of dodgy sources, but otherwise this is looking good.
- Dictator novel: 64 edits, three active group members. Remains at B-class. Progress has quickened up somewhat. The "style and theme" section is still the one that probably needs most attention. But this is probably on the verge of a Good Article nomination.
- Latin American Boom: 111 edits, two active group members (of two). Remains at B-class. Now well-sourced. A few sections need expansion (e.g. "Impact"), but probably close to a Good Article nomination.
Progress Report (March 25, 2008)
Another chance to take stock, as there are just a couple of weeks left. What follows are details of progress during the past week:
- Domingo Faustino Sarmiento: 28 edits, one active group member (of three). Remains at B-class. New sources have been added, but some weak ones remain and more sourcing is required.
- Miguel Ángel Asturias: 84 edits, one active group member (of two). Remains at B-class, and still in Good Article Review. Still a couple of issues to be cleared up as part of the Good Article Review.
- Augusto Roa Bastos: 29 edits, one active group member (of two). Remains at start-class. A couple of sources have been added, but more are urgently required.
- Gabriel García Márquez: 205 edits, three active group members. Remains at B-class. A huge amount of new material and sources have been added. Requires some formatting and editing, but coming close to GA review.
- Mario Vargas Llosa: 376 edits, three active group members. Remains at B-class, but now in Good Article Review. This has been a huge effort on the part of this group, and particularly Lincoln. We are mostly now waiting for a review.
- Facundo: 45 edits, three active group members. Remains at B-class. Sources have been added, but expansion required, most urgently a full synopsis.
- El Señor Presidente: 100 edits, two active group members (of three). Now a Good Article. Inadvertently put in to Featured Article Candidacy; subsequently withdrawn. Some sources issues remain, and some stylistic issues too, but Manual of Style questions loom large.
- I, the Supreme: 71 edits, two active group members (of three). Remains at B-class. Now has some good, reliable sources, and probably not far to go before a Good Article nomination.
- The General in His Labyrinth: 227 edits, three active group members. Remains at B-clss, but now in Good Article Review. A tremendous effort, above all from Eva and Carla. A few issues remain, above all the book synopsis.
- The Feast of the Goat: 57 edits, three active group members. Remains at start-class. This article is starting to take shape, but still has some way to go.
- Dictator novel: 38 edits, three active group members. Remains at B-class. Progress has been slow but steady. The "style and theme" section is the one that probably needs most attention.
- Latin American Boom: 111 edits, two active group members (of two). Remains at B-class. A number of good sources have been added. This article is taking shape, but structure still needs work.
So there has been a decent amount of progress pretty much everywhere across the project. Let's see a bunch more Good Article nominations this week!
Progress Report (March 16, 2008)
This seems a good time to take stock, before we start on the final straight towards (hopefully) Feature Article status. What follows is an account of each article's progress in 2008:
- Domingo Faustino Sarmiento: 143 edits, has progressed from start-class to B-class.
- Miguel Ángel Asturias: 381 edits, has progressed from start-class to B-class, currently in Good Article Review.
- Augusto Roa Bastos: 12 edits, is still at start-class.
- Gabriel García Márquez: 118 edits; is still at B-class.
- Mario Vargas Llosa: 135 edits, is still at B-class. (It had initially been incorrectly marked as GA-class.)
- Facundo: 149 edits, has progressed from unrated to B-class.
- El Señor Presidente: 579 edits, has progressed from non-existence to B-class, currently in Good Article Review.
- I, the Supreme: 121 edits, has progressed from non-existence to B-class.
- The General in His Labyrinth: 184 edits, has progressed from start-class to B-class
- The Feast of the Goat: 32 edits, has progressed from stub-class to start-class.
- Dictator novel: 170 edits, has progressed from unrated to B-class.
- Latin American Boom: 80 edits, has progressed from unrated to B-class.
So there has been a decent amount of progress. We just need to keep it up!

Statistics
Article traffic
Some interesting info about Wikipedia article traffic statistics... You can check to see how often your page has been viewed in any particular month. Here are the links and statistics for March, 2008, though if you follow the links you can change the parameters to any other month:
- Gabriel García Márquez: 62,170 views.[1] Or c. 740,000 views per year.
- Mario Vargas Llosa: 11,869 views[2] Or c. 140,000 views per year.
- Domingo Faustino Sarmiento: 5,142 views.[3] Or c. 61,000 views per year.
- Miguel Ángel Asturias: 4,892 views.[4] Or c. 58,000 views per year.
- Facundo: 4,416 views. Or c. 52,000 views per year.
- The General in His Labyrinth: 4,119 views.[5]. Or c. 49,000 views per year.
- El Señor Presidente: 3,345 views.[6] Or c. 40,000 views per year.
- Latin American Boom: 3,319 views.[7] Or c. 39,000 views per year.
- Dictator novel: 2,143 views.[8] Or c. 25,000 views per year.
- The Feast of the Goat: 2,031 views.[9] Or c. 24,000 views per year.
- Augusto Roa Bastos: 1,558 views.[10] Or c. 18,000 views per year.
- I, the Supreme: 1,176 views.[11] Or c. 14,000 views per year.
Obviously, quite a number of these page views are from group members working on the article itself.[12] But not all. Especially for the more popular pages! So there have been people out there reading our work...
Google page rank
Some more information to bear in mind to help you think about the significance of what you're doing in this assignment. What follows are the google page ranks of each article. In each case I've used what I have thought would be the most likely search method: for instance submitting the search term into google without using quotation marks or accents (i.e. Gabriel Garcia Marquez rather than "Gabriel García Márquez")...
- Dictator Novel: google rank #1 on first page of results
- Facundo: google rank #1 on first page of results
- Feast of the Goat (also Goat Feast): google rank #1 on first page of results
- General in his Labyrinth (also General Labyrinth): google rank #1 on first page of results
- Latin American Boom (also Latin America Boom): google rank #1 on first page of results
- Roa Bastos: google rank #1 on first page of results
- Domingo Sarmiento: google rank #2 on first page of results
- Mario Vargas Llosa: google rank #2 on first page of results
- Gabriel Garcia Marquez: google rank #3 on first page of results
- Yo el Supremo: google rank #3 on first page of results (though my blog is #2, heh)
- Miguel Angel Asturias: google rank #4 on first page of results
- El Senor Presidente: google rank #10 on first page of results
- I the Supreme: second page of google results
It does looks as though the newer pages (El Señor Presidente and I, the Supreme) take a while to get indexed properly. Though they are likely to move up the rankings.
