Revision as of 03:09, 9 July 2012
This WikiProject exists to coordinate efforts to improve editor retention at Wikipedia by addressing existing difficulties and the ever changing needs of the community while providing a positive environment to discuss new ideas that will further this goal.
Editors leave Wikipedia for a number of reasons. In order to improve the overall quality of articles at Wikipedia, we recognize that we must find new ways to get the community more involved in maintaining the pool of talent from both new and established editors.
The policies of Wikipedia are NOT decided here. Policies are discussed here, with the goal of finding solutions that are specifically tailored toward editor retention, so that these changes can be proposed via RFCs and other appropriate venues here at Wikipedia.
As some of the topics discussed are controversial or contentious, participants should strive to remain civil at all times. We may have very different ideas for solutions but we all share the same goal of keeping good editors here.
This is a new project, and many, many things are liable to change in the format and lists below. Join the talk page and help be a part of creating the project. It is open to every single editor who shares the concerns and is willing to help.
Goals
- Increase retention of editors at Wikipedia
- Advise participants of methods they can use to prevent editor loss
- Promote a more congenial environment that editors will want to participate in
- Document ways in which all editors can achieve these goals
How you can help
- Promote this project by telling others about it, and displaying one of these userboxes
- Participate on the talk page and develop ideas
- Get involved in the policy areas of Wikipedia that affect editor retention
- Help us develop this project into a catalyst for positive change
What this project is NOT
Editor retention is a project-wide problem, so the focus of this wikiproject is not on individuals, we aren't here to point fingers, or make accusations. Our focus isn't on the problems of the past, it is to build a stronger Wikipedia in the future, a Wikipedia that editors want to stick around and participate in. We will not condone making lists of "bad actors". Pointing out the good actions of admins and others is encouraged, as we believe the best way to lead is by example. We want to point out what is RIGHT about Wikipedia, encourage others to use those methods, and establish new methods and ideas that make editing Wikipedia fun, fulfilling and rewarding for everyone.
Reasons editors leave
Not all reasons that editors leave can be "fixed", as many simply move onto other interests or have lifestyle changes that limit their participation. This list focuses on the reasons that can be addressed here at Wikipedia, rather than these lifestyle decisions. These are problems that are within the scope of this project, in no particular order. Feel free to modify if needed.
- POV issues from other editors
- Frustration from the process (bad blocks or other administrative actions)
- Sockpuppeting causing insurmountable obstacles to editing enjoyment
- Edit warring from other editors
- Ownership of articles by one or more editors
- Frustration from the confusion of rules and guidelines
- Personal attacks, accusations and incivility
- Deletion of their contributions
- Outing of personal, off-site information
- Atrophy
More data on this issue is available from the Former Contributors Survey Results.
