Some Wikipedians have formed a project to create a workable system for Deletion sorting, which has evolved into a complementary way of organizing deletion discussions (e.g. they are organized by category in addition to their normal organization by date alone).
To help this project, please add new AFD discussions to one of the current list of deletion categories.
For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProjects and Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices.
Title
WikiProject on Deletion sorting
Scope
This project involves transcluding AFD discussions in category specific pages, that makes it easier for people find a topic they have knowledge and interest in. In the past, and still in most cases presently, these discussions are organized solely by date. At one time this level of structure was adequate, because there were sufficiently few deletions that a person could review most of them on a daily basis while still contributing as a Wikipedian. However, Votes for deletion has grown far beyond human scale, with a throughput now approaching 1,000 pages per week and rising quickly. This has the effect of separating deletion debates from the healthy process of encyclopedia-building. It is hoped that a workable system for categorized deletion, which will bring deletion debates to the attention of editors active in relevant topical areas, will alleviate these problems.
Inspiration
This project was strongly inspired by Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting, and also by the ongoing discussion on deletion reform.
Descendant WikiProjects
No descendant WikiProjects have been defined.
Similar WikiProjects
This project is similar to others concerned with improving Wikipedia's internal practices, such as those listed at [[1]]. In particular, since it is concerned with categorization, it is similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories as well as Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting.

Goals
The ultimate goal of this project is to create and pilot a categorization system that can fully replace Votes for deletion. The ultimate decision on that replacement, of course, will have to be made by the community. The following are largely sequential goals. By fulfilling each in turn, we can bring deletion back into the healthy process of encyclopedia-building.
- Develop an initial, conservative set of deletion categories and criteria for inclusion. (Arguably finished, see /Flat and Talk)
- (concurrent with above) carry out a 10-day survey of debates in VfD, CfD, and possibly also TfD and RfD. Put each debate in one or more places on the list of proposed categories, according to article and discussion content. (Finished, see /Beta)
- Draft clear criteria for inclusion in each category.
- Create transcluded topical lists, based on selected categories. Publicize these to the relevant editing communities, using WikiProjects, notice boards, or other fora. (Under way).
- Create actual categories. This will require inserting category tags into VfD subpages, but need not disrupt the VfD process in any way. All discussions would continue to take place on VfD subpages, and to be included in the daily log.
- (may be concurrent with any of the above). Include transcluded debates on the talk page of the affected article. This does not contravene existing policy, but it is not yet commonly done. (This would also guarantee that kept articles retain a record of the debate, which at present is often not the case). Formally propose that a subpage of the article be the standard location for debates, with the VfD subpage being a redirect.
- (may be concurrent with any of the above) Document the many serious problems with the existing VfD process. Someone's going to need to get their hands really dirty for this one.
- Make sure that the entire process is running smoothly, with all debates finding their way to relevant categories and lists. There are various technical and procedural wrinkles to be smoothed out here.
- Propose that the main page of VfD be turned into a general information page on the topical deletion process, and the daily log converted into a simple list.
Tasks
- Improve list of cateogries, to ensure every article has an appropriate place, and their aren't the large number of unused categories. This may involve removing a number of dormant categories.
Other subpages
- /Flat, a list of all current deletion lists.
Templates
Proposals for topical deletion templates are welcome. These should be unobtrusive, so that they could be added in-line to a deletion discussion, and contain a category link as well as a topical-list link.
Categories
A draft category structure can be found at /Beta. Please join the discussion and help to improve it!
Lists
It will be useful to create transcluded lists of deletion debates included in specific categories. Since such lists need not interfere in the VfD process directly at all, they could be created at any time. If you create such a list, please also publicize it to editors working in the topical area. This will help to community awareness of categorized deletion, and demonstrate its use value.
List of lists
See /Flat or Special:Prefixindex/Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting for a complete list of active lists.
