Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here. | |
---|---|
Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection) After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism. Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level
Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level
Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here |

Indefinite extended confirmed protection: Right now transclusions amount is closer to 10,000. George Ho (talk) 04:45, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- Question: If I recall correctly, extended confirmed protection is not to be used unless in cases where disruption is actively occurring and semi protection has failed or will not work. Souldn't template protection be considered instead? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:32, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- Template-protection means no one (exactly no one) except an administrator or template-editor would accessibly edit this template. ECP allow others to edit... but not as many people as "autoconfirmed". Also, what about WP:NOTBUREAUCRACY, which discourages overly strict interpretations on rules, like WP:ECP? By the way, the protection on ECP is discussed at WP:AN. --George Ho (talk) 10:21, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- Oshwah is right - policy would show preference towards template protection in this case. ECP is only for after semi has proven insufficient. However, WikiProject templates do not typically have template protection according to my quick survey. Samsara 02:35, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
- I requested an administrator to downgrade protection of Template:WikiProject University of California from template-protect to ECP. In fact, that template is used by 2,000+ pages. George Ho (talk) 02:47, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
- Also, I reread WP:PAG#Adherence. It says,
Use common sense when interpreting and applying policies and guidelines; there will be occasional exceptions to these rules.
However, it also says,Conversely, those who violate the spirit of a rule may be reprimanded even if no rule has technically been broken.
If the template is TP-ed, this implies that administrators may not trust EC users to edit this template. ECP might be up to administrators, but very little or less amount of EC users are vandals or sockpuppets... right? George Ho (talk) 02:52, 1 December 2016 (UTC)- Well... no. There's a big difference that we're missing here: We must understand that article content and template code are two entirely different things. Extended confirmed protection is to be used on articles and collaboration pages in order to protect the content from higher levels of disruption. Template protection restricts editing of widely-used or high-risk templates so that only users who have demonstrated competency and experience with the proper handling and modification of template code, objects, scripts, etc can modify them. This is due to the fact that making a mistake and pushing a change with bad code and without testing first can cause a very high level of damage and impact to the project in one save. These protection levels were designed from two entirely different processes, and placing ECP on templates is not the intended purpose of that protection level. I agree... common sense should always be used.... of course. Who wouldn't agree with that :-)? But this means that we don't (for example) chase administrators for applying ECP on an article when there's a clear need for it simply because he didn't apply semi first, then do it again. Although these protections levels do the same thing but at different user levels, they were made for entirely different areas and processes and are protecting pages for completely different reasons. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:07, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
- Total amount of EC users is nearly 30,000, while that of template editors is 147. Not many of people would request to become template editors. Why is that? George Ho (talk) 03:17, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
- I think the idea is that people who need to edit templates should be given the template editor user right. You can request it at WP:PERM. I haven't worked in the permission-granting arena lately, but I would expect having the right granted would depend on prior experience in template editing. Samsara 04:54, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

- Declined Protecting while AfD nominated is not a good course of action, as it may prevent needed improvements and "doom" the article. The "BLP violations" do not add up to much, it's more of a dispute over whether certain aspects should be included. On balance of those two things, I don't see a good rationale for protecting. Panthéon-Assas University
- Panthéon-Assas University (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Protection: There is a disruptive editing on the Panthéon-Assas page. One user is not happy with the reputation of this university of "top law school of France" that all the sources state (he’s deleting in the lead, but there are more sources in the "reputation" section, so he’s deleting things with sources, and is doing only personal attacks on me in talk page (like I would be clearly protecting paid contribution!?)
Note that it’s part of a broader POV pushing on the Sorbonne in general. There is currently a push on Pantheon-Sorbonne_University and there has been vandalism through false edit summaries also on Sorbonne University (alliance) and Sorbonne Law School pages, or with no edit summary of Paris-Sorbonne University page. But for example my work on University of Lorraine or the good ranking that I add in Aix-Marseille University page is not vandalized because there is no link with the name Sorbonne. There was also Science Po but it has already been fully protected. I took care of the latter Sorbonne University and Sorbonne Law School, others are taking care of Pantheon-Sorbonne and Paris-Sorbonne, but the user is insisting on Panthéon-Assas (Sorbonne Law School) and is now attacking me personally on talk page.
--Launebee (talk) 21:46, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- Indeed, cross-wiki disruptive contributions have targeted pages related to Pantheon-Sorbonne_University (or its rival, like Sciences Po which is already protected because of Launebee's contributions).
- I have 30'000+ contributions on the French Wikipedia, and we had to deal with the same problem during the last months (same methods, same articles). But to put it simply :
- the account Droas82 was created on the 1st of December 2015], targeted the fr: Université Panthéon-Assas, used Eduniversal source to back his/her claims... and met a strong opposition
- the account Launebee was created on the 1st of December 2015], targeted the Panthéon-Assas University (among others), used Eduniversal source to back his/her claims... and met a strong opposition
- To go back to this specific article, I have already mentionned (with references) on the talk page that a lot of mainstream newspapers rank this university far from the top places. It doesn't bother Launebee, and he/she keep putting again, and again, that the university "has always been ranked first in law in national rankings". He or she knows that the claim is false, but keeps putting it on the lead section. XIIIfromTOKYO (talk) 22:38, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Current requests for reduction in protection level
Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.
- To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
- Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
- Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
- If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.
Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Current requests for edits to a protected page
Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.
- Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among
{{Edit protected}}
,{{Edit template-protected}}
,{{Edit extended-protected}}
, or{{Edit semi-protected}}
to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed. - Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the
{{Edit COI}}
template should be used. - Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
- If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
- This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
