The names to be used in "nationality x" naming formats are not prescribed for any nationality. In particular, the name used for such categories pertaining to the [[United States]] is not specified. |

For categories named "nationality x", a straw poll on this page has indicated a strong preference (44 out of 48 voters) for standardization of some sort on this issue. Approximately 2/3 of those supporting standardization indicated a preference for "American x" over "United States x" or "x of the United States" (31-12-2 with one voter voting for two options and one additional voter indicating a preference for some standard without indicating which), with the obvious exception of proper nouns (e.g. the U.S.Army does not call itself the American Army). Some users suggested there may have been a [[systemic bias]] in this poll, although there is no specific evidence of such bias. |

Most editors agree that standard usage in the United States would be "American x". (Some editors claim that this is standard usage in other English-speaking countries as well). Some editors claim using "American" to refer exclusively to the United States in this fashion is culturally insensitive and such usage should be avoided. |

The category naming conventions specify the country names to use in categories for "x of country" and "x in country" naming formats. In these categories the agreed usage is already "x of the United States".
Some users suggested there may have been a systemic bias in this poll, although there is no specific evidence of such bias.
