Mistaken Ip identity
When I accessed Wikipedia this afternoon I was told I (i.e. someone using my IP address) had been causing your site problems in August 2008. I bought this computer new from Staples in January 2009. How could I be responsible for something in August 2008? Roger Smith —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.67.139.179 (talk) 02:38, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- You are not responsible, and no-one has suggested you are. Someone else who previously had the same IP address as you was responsible. You need do nothing about this, but if you intend to use Wikipedia a lot, you might want to create an account to avoid the possibility of such problems in the future. Algebraist 02:44, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Thank You. And thanks for being so prompt! Roger —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.67.139.179 (talk) 02:54, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- IP addresses are routinely assigned to new machines, so it can happen that your computer gets assigned the IP of someone who vandalized part of Wikipedia in the past before your computer even existed. Creating an account will avoid any potential mistaken identities. - Mgm|(talk) 05:56, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
How do I request undeletion of a deleted page?
I am new to Wikipedia and attempted to add a new page today. I thought I did everything right, clicked "save the page" and bookmarked it. When I returned later I received this message: 19:21, 22 March 2009 Kicking222 (talk | contribs) deleted "Las vegas and the mob" (R3: Recently-created, implausible redirect)
I have no idea what I did wrong. I used the help topics and went to page after page looking for an explanation and couldn't find one. I attempted to contact Kicking222. I found his page but couldn't figure out how to post or send my question.
I'm trying to find out if the problem can be fixed - maybe it just needs a new name or something simple - or if this is a dead issue and I need to start from scratch.
I am user Dennis N. Griffin. My email address was included in my profile and has been verified.
Thanks.

- You should be able to leave him a message, click the tab Discussion, then Edit this page.
- Maybe he felt your contribution was better suited for History_of_Las_Vegas#1947-1963:_Postwar_boom_.26_organized_crime. It is generally hard to make a new article on Wikipedia since most everything already has an appropriate article, they want to keep things organized. Here is the information of what warrents its own article: Wikipedia:Notability - Habanero-tan (talk) 03:51, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- Denny, Did you see the message from User:Kicking222 on your user talk page? Apparently your article was titled Las vegas and the mob, and it was about Anthony Spilotro. There is already an article about Spilotro; so your article was redundant. You can edit the existing article if you like.
- Kicking222 mentions a book you have written; I can’t tell what if any connection it has to your article. It is frowned on for you to use Wikipedia for publicity, and any article that looks like publicity will be deleted. All articles on Wikipedia must be written from a neutral point of view. For you to write neutrally about your book would be difficult because you have a conflict of interest. If you still want to write about the book, you should read Wikipedia:Your first article—particularly the parts about notability and reliable sources. —teb728 t c 03:58, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

New Article
Dear Sirs,
I created a new article about my mother, Barbara Everard, and saved it. How long will it be before it appears in Wikipedia? And how do I up load .jpg pictures? I have photographs of her and some of her paintings and book covers to illustrate the article.
Regards
Everardmr01 (talk) 17:28, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- The article is currently in your user space at User:Everardmr01. To appear in the mainspace, it will have to be moved there. Before we do that however, you need some reliable sources to support her notability, otherwise it will probably be deleted. To upload images, see WP:Upload (your account must be autoconfirmed before you can upload files and move pages). Also because of your relationship with the subject of the article, you have a significant conflict of interest and the article will be heavily scrutinised for neutrality. – ukexpat (talk) 17:33, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

- I don't know the translation, however, many Wikipedias will send a welcome email if you visit from another project. Maybe you stopped by a foreign project? TNXMan 18:58, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- According to this language identifier, it's Bulgarian. If you have a unified login, you'll sometimes get welcome messages from wikipedias you've never visited before. — jwillbur 19:24, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- Actually (and I should have thought of this before), it's Macedonian. Compare the links listed in the email (which start with mk) and the List of Wikipedias. TNXMan 19:26, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- The Law of unintended consequences has kicked in with the unified login option, which has now undermined the previously valid assumption that when someone creates an account on a particular Wikipedia, they probably read the language of that Wikipedia, and therefore they should be able to read a welcome e-mail message. Now we can automatically create accounts on Wikipedias in any language without intending to or even realizing that we did. This has created several instances of this question on this Help desk, and will probably create more. Ideally the unified login feature would include a language preference feature, such that when we blunder into a foreign-language Wikipedia, any system communication we get would account for our language preference. However, it will probably be a long time before the Wikipedia community figures out how to solve the language problem. Check out Commons which tries to accommodate all languages in one site. --Teratornis (talk) 20:50, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Flickr images upload for a User
How can I tell what Flickr images (ONLY) I have uploaded and how many Flickr images I have uploaded?--Doug Coldwell talk 22:14, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

- Thanks, however I am looking for a method where the database list ONLY my Flickr uploaded images. I have hundreds of images uploaded, however I want to see ONLY a list of Flickr images that I have uploaded, not all my images. In other words a filter that shows ONLY the Flickr images from the hundreds of other images. Thanks.--Doug Coldwell talk 23:00, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- You can ask someone (probably a developer) to run an SQL query on the database. I got a list of all articles with a certain URL that way. Your request should be no different you can search for flickr related licensing tags in your contributions. - Mgm|(talk) 23:35, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
A picture i took of a copyrighted work
I was talking to an admin and he doesn't know the answer to this. So, here is my question: Is this picture I took with my cell phone camera of my copy of Denis Leary's book Why We Suck OK to use on Wikipedia? I think I added the appropriate tag. The filename of the image I uploaded is File:Whywesuckcover.jpg (new user and can't figure out how to link to the image) Thanks for the help! Amicianthony (talk) 23:32, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- In the relevant article it's okay to use, but it would still be fair use since you're reproducing a copyrighted work. Rule of thumb: If the thing you photograph is copyrighted (book or image), the resulting image is still copyrighted. You can't transfer ownership or copyright by reproducing the work. - Mgm|(talk) 23:37, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)A better place to ask this question is WP:MCQ. That said: in general, book covers in articles about the book fall squarely within the non-free content criteria. You might want to use the template {{Book cover fur}} to generate the fair-use rationale. The only problem I can see with the image is that, being taken by a mobile phone, it isn't a very high-quality image. If you have access to a scanner, a scan of the book cover would be much better. You can link to images like this. Algebraist 23:40, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for all your help! I will try to scan it soon, i just wans't sure, as the copyright notice mentioned something about it being "low-resolution", and I wasn't sure what it meant. Amicianthony (talk) 23:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- You can always lower the resolution of your scanned image. It'll still look better than a dodgy photo. Algebraist 23:56, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- Check the page now, I uploaded a scanned copy. On the image's page, I tried to put in WP:MCQ, but it is very confusing and I don't understand the formatting. Amicianthony (talk) 00:17, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Death Certs
How can a death certificate be cited? I'm thinking specifically for citing the cause of death. Dismas|(talk) 00:10, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- What notable person's cause of death does not appear in news media articles? I don't understand why you would need to cite a death certificate, not that you couldn't, I just don't understand the need. For example, just perusing some of the recent celebrity deaths (Natasha Richardson, Jade Goody, etc.), the press accounts go into great detail about the causes of death. If you do need to cite a death certificate, if it's online somewhere, maybe you could use the catch-all {{Cite web}}. If it's not online, maybe just a {{Citation}}. Or you could join the legions of Wikipedia editors who eschew citation templates and use whatever format they please (not something I particularly like, but millions of people don't care what I like). --Teratornis (talk) 04:56, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- Diane Webber. I welcome you to search. I can't find anything online. Dismas|(talk) 05:08, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- Where did you see the death certificate? Has it been published anywhere? If not then it may not satisfy Wikipedia:Verifiability, but I don't know anything about the availability of American death certificates. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:22, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- I never really thought about this before, but is the cause of death of an otherwise notable person automatically notable? It sounds as if Diane Webber was notable when she was young, and then as she aged she sank into a Stygian obscurity, such that by the time she died, the cause of her death was only of interest to a few bloggers and not to the professional news outlets, biographers, and so on. If the mainstream media doesn't report the cause of her death, is that a sufficiently notable feature to include in her article? --Teratornis (talk) 01:25, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'm probably the last person who would cite a need for notability, given that I think the notability requirement tends to be abused on Wikipedia just a bit (yes, I lean toward inclusionism), but in this case if there are none of the usual reliable sources reporting on an event, then maybe the notability argument is something to think about. Personally, I wouldn't object to citing a death certificate, but it wouldn't be the easiest thing for other editors to verify. I wonder if you could scan the death certificate and send a copy in e-mail to our OTRS? I don't know whether OTRS gets used for this sort of thing, but it would seem like a reasonable way to verify printed information that is otherwise inconvenient to access. As far as how to cite a death certificate, you could Search Wikipedia with Google for: "death certificate" which seems to find some examples, such as:
- --Teratornis (talk) 03:37, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- Her social security death index information can be looked up here (go to advanced search and plug in CA for state and 2009 for death year and her death cerificate can be ordered here. Note that not all jurisdictions list anything other than "natural causes" on death certificates, and even when a cause is listed, it may just say "cancer".--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:41, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
To secure or not to secure?
I have just been granted NPWatcher, and I have problems staying logged in in order to use it. I normally log in using the secure server, but it seems to be causing me problems, as I get inexplicably logged out whenever I try to do something that ends up not getting done because I'm logged out. So my question is: am I just as safe not logging in on the secure server as I am doing so? --Whip it! Now whip it good! 00:38, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

- What topic are you considering editing? What changes do you intend to make? Why do you think you'd get in trouble with the law? As long as you're not comitting libel, copyright violations, or make death/terrorist threats, you really shouldn't be worrying about the law. But please do provide some more context. Someguy1221 (talk) 01:10, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- In trouble with law!?!? No! If you make a controversial edit, it will simply be reverted, and you may get a notification about your edit on your talk page. If you continue to make controversial edits without discussing them on the talk page after getting multiple warnings, you will be blocked. Law enforcers do not get involved with anything around here, unless you were to do something illegal in real life that correlated to your behavior on Wikipedia, or as the user above said, made any threats of physical harm, libelous claims or threats of a lawsuit towards Wikipedia. --Whip it! - Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup shows {{Howto}}. I have not seen a medical specific template for articles. All pages link to Disclaimers at the bottom. I don't think articles should refer to Wikipedia:Medical disclaimer or contain medical disclaimers. - The article could use some editing to remove the peacock language, improve the reference formatting, and fix the odd lettercase in the second word of the title, but I don't see any point in deleting it. Hardly anyone seems to be viewing the article yet which means it is not hurting Wikipedia. Deleting the article won't save any server space, since we keep copies of all deleted articles in the database. If nobody is viewing the article, it isn't using up any bandwidth. As far as I can tell, the only result of deleting the article might be to bite and possibly drive away another new user who might otherwise go on to contribute something worthwhile. --Teratornis (talk) 04:49, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, but the problem is the article doesn't have any reliable sources that cover the subject, other than local newspapers and a Facebook profile. He's been mentioned in ESPN, that's the biggest source I found mentioning him and he has some Google hits, although Google hits alone shouldn't get you an article in Wikipedia. So what now, remove the speedy deletion template and make it go through the normal AFD process? --Whip it! Now whip it good! 05:06, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Rootsweb
Is Rootsweb considered a reliable source? Dismas|(talk) 04:02, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- For what claims? And considered reliable by whom? If you write something that lots of people are likely to disagree with, a sufficiently determined opponent can find all sorts of guidelines or policies to throw against it, regardless of the reliability of the source. Precedent might be relevant here; a Special:LinkSearch on ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com seems to find a whole bunch of links. If nothing else, you won't be the first to link to this site from Wikipedia. --Teratornis (talk) 04:41, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

- No offense taken, since I'm not responsible for the vagueness and contradiction of Wikipedia's rules (WP:IAR, for example, contradicts every rule - including itself). Rather, the fact that we have 47,476,521 registered users is responsible for the difficulty of "getting an answer" - there is no easy way to ask 47,476,521 people representing every opinion on every issue to speak with one voice. It would be nice to reduce Wikipedia to a definitive algorithm, but we're not there yet. If you get an answer from one user, that doesn't predict how other users will react if you act on the answer. What seems reasonable to me probably seems outrageous to someone else (check my talk page for evidence). It would be useful if we had a super-powerful search tool that could show us whether an action one is contemplating now has generated debate in the past. Some heavily-debated issues are relatively easy to look up, but many debates are obscure, scattered around Wikipedia, and hiding behind unguessable synonyms. Sometimes the only way to tell how people will react to something is to just go ahead and do it, and see if it "sticks." As I pointed out above, it seems quite a few people have sliced the Gordian Knot of Wikipedia's vague rules by linking to the Rootsweb site. --Teratornis (talk) 16:59, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

I took a quick read, you'll need to fix the refs before submitting. Wikipedia:Citing sources is a good place to start to learn the format. Also you need to check if your article is not already covered in some manor on wikipedia or it may be merged early on in its life. With your user account you should be able to create the article yourself rather than have someone else do so when your ready. How to ADD my companies description as an article.
Hello,
I am first time user and i wanted to publish an article about my company and pretty much confused how to go about.
As the content in your website is well respected and people like me tend to come to this website to have more clear insight about a product or service or features or articles.
If you can guide me in completeing my article would be of great help.

- Unfortunately, Wikipedia does not publish advertising. All articles must be written from a neutral point of view and must be supported by independent reliable sources. Also, it sounds like you have a conflict of interest, which means you are discouraged from writing articles about yourself or your company. However, if you feel that you can write neutrally, I would suggest working on the article on your user page and asking other editors to review it. That way you can work on improving your article. BLP
If information is added that is accurately sourced and presented as fact, but is placed to insinuate something further is it considered a violation of BLP? I'm referring to material placed in a scandal page. The person's income is placed along with her husband's profession. While both facts are accurate, they have no place in the section other than to insinuate that the income was too high for her position and thus gained fraudulently despite that not being proven. Is that a violation and/or WP:SYN? Soxwon (talk) 15:02, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- Just to be clear, we are talking about Madoff investment scandal? – ukexpat (talk) 15:52, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I believe the allegations being made by reporting Annette Bongiorno's income and her husband's occupation were being used in synthesis, especially after getting this justification for their inclusion:
ann the personal secretary has been given perks to keep her mouth shut. there is an article http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE52J4IF20090320 an eyewitness discusses how everyone was overpaid. besides, you deleted the footnoted source. [2]
- While the sources support the claim I think the reasoning for its inclusion is not supported by wikipedia policy. Soxwon (talk) 16:19, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
- There are three things you should do, and give each some time to work...
- Start a discussion of the contested information at the article talk page. If that does not resolve the problem after a few days. The most appropriate place to discuss problems with an article is on the talk page of that article...
- Ask for a Third Opinion or a request for comment to get outside input, and if that leads no where...
- Ask for help at The Biography of Living Persons Noticeboard, which is patrolled by editors and admins with a special interets in solving problems with BLP articles.
- Good luck! --Jayron32.talk.contribs 23:03, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Fiction Type
Hello all! I have a question on what the heck kind of a...thing...I'm writing. It's set up almost like a screenplay or scriptment, where everything is presented in detail, save for the dialogue, which is largely paraphrased, and the inclusion of italicized, stream-of-consciousness thoughts. Some of the descriptions also tend to use very odd metaphors. So, what IS this thing? It's like a weird blend of scriptment, poetry, and novel, but whenever I try to pull it one way or the other, it just seems to lose its honesty and the message I'm trying to convey. Is this a funky new fiction type, or am I pretty much in a sinking boat? Because I really do enjoy writing it... Thanks! 74.46.148.173 (talk) 22:56, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Moslem Terrorism
I fully accept that the foreign policies of the USA and West have encouraged the spread of Islamic terrorism. One cannot create a jewish state for the second time (first one was on the fictitious conversations that Moses had with his Jewish God); take away the land of the indiginous people and keep many of them in refugess camps, where third and fourth generations are being born; give Israel economic help and provide advisors; allow them to develop a nuclear bomb; and at the same time ignore the plight of these displaced arabs. Just like the Northern Ireland conflict, the original inhabitants wanted a United Ireland and had to suffer from the ptotestany migrants brought in by a previous English Monarch to keep the catholic population under control. The 1920 agreement was absurd and because of the injustices Irish patiots eventually turned to violence which has succeeded in them realising part of their aspirations. The same applied to populations under the Ottoman Empire, so let us not be surprised by what has happened by the policies of so-called enlightened governments. We have to examine the route causes, apologise for our past mistakes and try and create a democratic world where all people can live in peace with their neighbours.
The greatest threat facing world citizens is what is being done in the name of religions because of the injustices imposed on ordinary people - that is at the heart of all unrest.
I want to continue my research into the causes of terrorism and would like the following information.
(1) The countries of the world where Islam is the main religion.
(2) Which of these countries is democratic and has only secular law.
(3) How many of these countries have both secular law and sharia law.
(4) How many of these countries have separate courts like Israel with its secular and Halakha laws.
(5) Would it be possible for the UN t create a Moslem Task Force to esnure that moderate people of all religions will subscribe to their kind of democracy where there is only one law in the land - that is secular law.
I am an 84 year Welsh Retired Aviator and hope you will be able to help me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.11.192.172 (talk) 11:06, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

- If this is homework, it sounds like a strange course. The questioner can find plenty of material on Wikipedia and elsewhere relating to the questions. It's probably worth pointing out that while the Israeli-Palestinian conflict gives rise to terrorism, most of it remains local, and groups like Hamas have for the most part avoided widening their operations beyond attacks against Israel. The wider spread of Islamic terrorism into a global phenomenon has been due more to groups like Al Qaeda and owes much to the ideas and leadership of Osama bin Laden, who comes from a prominent family of Saudi Arabia. While Osama bin Laden has no love for Israel, he spent his career first fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan (after being recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency) and then later fighting almost everybody else and the United States in particular. After the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan, when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and the U.S. began mobilizing to drive him out, bin Laden tried to persuade the Saudi Monarchy to let his organization lead the fight against Saddam, to avoid allowing large numbers of infidel American and other Western troops onto Saudi soil (regarded as sacred by Muslims). However, large numbers of infidel troops did move into Saudi Arabia to fight the Gulf War, and then remained afterwards to "contain" Saddam. This enraged bin Laden and (according to his own writings) became the reason why he declared war on the U.S. - to drive the U.S. out of Saudi Arabia (which, by the way, has to some degree occurred, as the U.S. has moved most of its forces out of Saudi Arabia and into neighboring countries like Iraq and Qatar, although I am sure no U.S. official would to portray this as a concession to bin Laden, and bin Laden for his part seems unsatisfied). Of course no discussion of Middle East politics makes sense without a mention of petroleum; Alan Greenspan claims the situation would probably never have occurred in the first place if the developed nations did not depend critically and increasingly on petroleum from the Persian Gulf. Robert Zubrin claims that energy independence is the decisive front in the U.S. war on terror. Merge request remedy
I just put my article Aglossa cuprina up. It has already been suggested that it be merged with a redirected page, Aglossa pinguinalis. How do I remedy this suggestion? I don't even know who submitted it. It said to begin a discussion, but I agree with the request. I just didn't know how to do it. Where should I go from here? - If he's notable, you should create the page on William Troy (editor) or William Troy (writer) for example chandler · 15:45, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- You can place a hatnote on the existing William Troy, for example

User script compatability
I was recently informed that my new script, User:Drilnoth/assessortags.js (see documentation) works in practically no browsers other than Firefox 3. I'm still kind of new to scripting, so it would be much appreciated if someone with a little more knowledge of it could take a look at the code and see what the problem is... other scripts based on the MoreBits library work find in many browsers that this one just isn't showing up in. Adding pictures
Dear Wikipedia Team!
I know I don't have the rights to ad pictures, but was wondering who I would need to talk to to add them! And after reading all the instructions my page is still up for speed deletion! Why is it so difficult to add something to Wikipedia???

- Hello Sonia, welcome to Wikipedia, where even Happy sunfish may occasionally sing the blues. New users often find Wikipedia difficult because they get fooled by Wikipedia's unusual style of reactive control. Most real-world organizations rely more on proactive control, by putting up barriers to prevent people from making certain kinds of mistakes.
- Proactive control: before you get permission to do something, you must demonstrate that you are qualified to do it.
- Reactive control: everybody gets permission with no qualifications, and when they make a mistake, other people delete it.
- Wikipedia is a do it yourself system that relies on reactive control. To succeed with a do it yourself system, you must read instructions. Since Wikipedia is one of the most complex systems available to the public, we have correspondingly complex instructions. To save yourself some frustration, read: Wikipedia: The Missing Manual. --Teratornis (talk) 20:28, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

uploading images for use in the main encyclopedia
I have a useful image for an article containing a note that it wants supplementation. I have opened an account and otherwise scrrewed around for an hour and have made no headway whatever. I tried to load the image into the Commons to start with as the "uploading images" link suggested. Nothing seems to produce any results. I like to consider myself reasonably computer literate. What's going on here? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Blswagger (talk • contribs) 18:42, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- See WP:Upload for more help. To upload to Wikipedia, your account must be autoconfirmed (4 days old and 10 edits). There is no autoconf requirement for Commons. If you are the creator of the image, Commons is the best place for it. – ukexpat (talk) 19:20, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- I recently learned about this: Commons:Commons:Autoconfirmed users which does mention uploading files. I cannot confirm that behavior because my account on Commons is not new. I agree with the reasoning behind autoconfirmation, but this seems to confuse some new users. We must not be getting these points across to the new
victimsusers. Since my account is no longer new, it's difficult for me to see exactly what new accounts are seeing (unless I were to create a sock for that purpose, a strategy I consider inelegant). Are we displaying the instructions that a new user needs, when they need them, to understand why various features aren't working yet in a new account? --Teratornis (talk) 22:05, 25 March 2009 (UTC)- That page is very confusing because by saying "Autoconfirmed users can... upload files" it strongly implies the converse to be true, which is not the case. You can indeed sign up for an account at commons and immediately upload a picture. I'm going to go change the language or, if protected, post on the talk page.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:25, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- Edit protected request is at Commons talk:Autoconfirmed users.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:56, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. There are some questions currently on the Commons Help desk about autoconfirmation, and it's hard to answer them without a clear statement of who can and cannot do what things, when, and on what site. I guess these questions tend to answer themselves after four days, possibly reducing the incentive for experienced users to clarify the documents. --Teratornis (talk) 00:22, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia table formatting
I am wondering why certain rows in tables do not get separated by a line. An example of what I mean can be found in the Masters Tournament article. Look at the rows for 2005/2004, 1998/1997, and 1991-1990. There are others in the same table. The formatting in the code looks the same as any other row. What gives? Subpage and new article
Hello, some months back I asked about writing an article about the mystery writer Cara Black and I was told to write it as a subpage. Someone else has since written the article but there is content in my subpage that might be worth adding. Other people edited my subpage too so I don't know how to add this without giving proper attribution to them.
Is it also fine if I have the subpage deleted once the material has been added to the article?
Thank you. LovesMacs (talk) 00:29, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- The only other contributor to the subpage is Fuhghettaboutit , so the simplest may be if you two reach an agreement. If you agree to delete the subpage after using the contents then I don't see a problem in the deletion. Normally you should keep the edit history of a page if you copy content not made by yourself to another page, and link the original page in the edit summary. Help with uploaded picture and the copyright tag
Greetings.
New editor here. Sorry, but I'm overwhelmed with the cautions, restrictions and boatloads of info regarding uploaded images (and I do understand the need for them) . . however, I'm still befuddled about a simple photo upload that I would like to post.
I've received a photo from Robert J. Kuntz that he would like to have in his Wikipedia entry. I don't know what tag to use.
Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks.
Here's the link to the photo:

Much appreciated,

- Assuming that Mr Kuntz owns the copyright of that image, he will have to follow the process set out at WP:IOWN to grant permission for it to be used on Wikipedia. When that's done, then we can deal with adding it to the article. – ukexpat (talk) 03:21, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. For now I've added the non-free promo tag. Rhuvein (talk) 16:27, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Migrating images using Commons Helper
I am attempting to move images to the Commons using CommonsHelper and CommonsHelper Helper. I feel as though I am following all on-screen prompts correctly, but there is a problem: Only the most recent image gets transferred, not the full image archive. See, for example, this wikipedia version versus the migrated version on Commons.
Is this a documented issue? So far as I know, using these tools is considered to be "best practice" for moving images from Wikipedia to Commons, so how can it be that this method does not follow the stated requirement that the full image upload history go along as well? I must be doing something wrong, but I do not know what. --Notyourbroom (talk) 04:41, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- I would also like to know the answer to this question.
- Searching the Commons: namespace on Commons for: CommonsHelper finds some pages that mention CommonsHelper, but nothing jumps right out in the first page or two of search results about the question of copying old revisions of an image.
- Commons:User talk:Magnus Manske has some discussion about CommonsHelper. The author of CommonsHelper mentions the JIRA system for reporting and tracking bugs to his tools. You might find something in there.

Problem with Wikiproject Philosophy Participants page
In the page Wikipedia:WikiProject_Philosophy/participants a number of templates are supposed to be incorporated into the page which display the names of participants of various philosophy task forces. As a participant of the analytic philosophy task force, I updated the required template (i.e., Template:AΦTF) adding my name, incidentally the only name on it right now. I also placed the appropriate userbox on my user page (i.e., Template:User_WP_Analytic_Philosophy) . Yet on the page listing the particaipants' name, my name does not appear. Hi,
I creted a login and wrote a post years ago. I cant remember my user id or password, and cant remember the post either, but am curious as to what it was.
I know what my email addresses are, so, if I provided you with a list of email addresses i use, could you tell me what my user name was, so I can reset my password and log in? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.71.143.91 (talk) 14:10, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- Unfortunately such a thing isn't possible; it would break the privacy policy to reveal a user's email address. If you can't remember any details about the account, then it's lost forever. But if you can remember even a part of what your user ID was, you can use Special:ListUsers to list all usernames that begin with a certain sequence of characters. Here is a list of all Someguys, for example. Someguy1221 (talk) 14:19, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- Alternatively, you could try to remember where and when you made your post, and trace it (and your account) that way. Algebraist 14:20, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
How to toggle to insert mode for symbols, Wiki markup, Greek, etc. while editing
