Move conflict (re: Sea of Faces)
Minutes ago, I was about to move Sea of Faces (Fowley, Parker song) to Sea of Faces (song) (as the only such article at this writing documenting a notable tune under this title). Turns out I was blocked by the existence of the latter, which has redirected to the Kutless album of the same name since 2009. What next to do from here? Informative Videos on Wikipedia
As we see all the scrap on YouTube why don't we come up with informative videos on Wikipedia.
This help people to search for specific content they are looking without getting deviated with irrelevant content.
Every parent will feel safe while kids search for content that help them in studies or knowledge.
Wikipedia will become will be everyone's place to search any kind of content. Appala.baipilli (talk) 06:49, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- Appala.baipilli, if WP were everyone's place to search for any kind of content, then it would be (for example) the porn-fiend's place to search for porn -- whereupon parents (or many of them) would not feel safe. That's just one contradiction. Your idea has plenty of other problems too. But if you want to pursue it, then the place to do so is Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab). -- Hoary (talk) 08:38, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Appala.baipilli: Wikipedia is crowdsourced by volunteers who each do whatever they choose. Good videos are a lot of work. If you personally wish to make videos, please feel free to do so. If you personally wish to create a project to do this systematically, please go ahead. You will probably attract others to help you if you have a plan and have produced a good first example. -Arch dude (talk) 12:58, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Appala.baipilli Note that Wikimedia Commons encourages the upload of videos and would be happy to host those of the type you suggest. Full details at c:COM:VID Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:08, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
Error: Unable to display the reference properly. See the documentation for details.
In W3af the error: "Error: Unable to display the reference properly. See the documentation for details." appears.
It is caused by: {{wikidata|property|edit|reference|P348}}
The same (or a similar) problem is at for example: GimPhoto and slrn. Can someone explain wtf is going on and how to fix it? Thanks! 2A02:A46E:9885:0:8998:4211:DCCE:3A82 (talk) 10:42, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- The error message links to Module:Wd/doc#References which says: "The reference to be displayed has to have at least title (P1476) and reference URL (P854) properties." The pencil icon where the reference is used in the infobox links to [1] in the Wikidata item where I added a title.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 11:11, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- @PrimeHunter: Ok, so if I understand you correctly using the Wikidata thing just creates a bunch of busywork and we should stop using it (for example see GimPhoto and slrn). Asking a reference URL for every single version of a piece of software is nonsensical. It shows an error, does not even explain what the actual error is, and people have to read a bunch of stuff and then use the wikidata interface to solve the error. I actually tried to understand it but it turns out it is just wasting my time and making Wikipedia inaccessible to anyone who values their time on this planet. How do we get rid of wikidata? 2A02:A46E:9885:0:8998:4211:DCCE:3A82 (talk) 11:41, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- Or, how do we make wikidata usable? It should at least show which missing piece of data caused which problem. 2A02:A46E:9885:0:8998:4211:DCCE:3A82 (talk) 12:06, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- Module:Wd/doc#References starts with: "When either the
reference
or thereferences
command is used and a reference is encountered (in Wikidata), the module attempts to display it using the {{Cite web}} template." So the current calls explicitly ask for making a reference. If you omit|reference
in the call then the reference and any associated error message will disappear. Suggestions for Module:Wd and its error messages can be posted to Module talk:Wd. The first section is currently about reference errors but has no posts since August. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:26, 23 October 2023 (UTC)- Looking at GimPhoto (and GIMPshop), where the error is still present, the error was introduced by an IP editor on 30 August 2022, so presumably they are responsible for introducing the error and not asking for help to fix it at the time. TSventon (talk) 13:16, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- This may be a stupid question, but is this fixable by bot? There are ~1300 pages in this category. I could not find a tutorial on how to fix those errors. Did I not use the correct search terms? Looking at for example ACE (editor) and AbsoluteTelnet and the joke software called .NET the red errors are very prominently displayed despite being quite unimportant (e.g. no URL for a version of a program). 2A02:A46E:9885:0:8998:4211:DCCE:3A82 (talk) 14:15, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- The current error message was added 6 May 2023 [3][4] after discussion at Module talk:Wd/Archive 1#Reference formatting bug when using "author name string" (P2093). I do think a reference url without a title (which appears to be optional at Wikidata) is handled poorly. For comparison,
{{Cite web|url=https://github.com/andresriancho/w3af/releases/tag/1.6.54}}
produces: - https://github.com/andresriancho/w3af/releases/tag/1.6.54.
{{cite web}}
: Missing or empty|title=
(help) - That still gives a clickable reference and the red message is less prominent and doesn't call it an "error". But this dicussion belongs at Module talk:Wd if you want attention from editors of the module who can actually change it. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:27, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Help in article submission Review
The rules say that articles in AFC will be reviewed at random. Is it possible to ask other people for help? For example if I write articles about military subjects, would a request in corresponding Wikiproject be lawful and people will review submission ahead of time? F.Alexsandr (talk) 10:51, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- It's not "at random", exactly; it's according to what the volunteer reviewers choose to work on. You may certainly request assistance on your draft from a relevant WikiProject. Whether that will get the draft reviewed any sooner is not predictable - there may not happen to be any reviewers who watch that project, and even if they are, that does not necessarily mean that they will get to your draft any sooner.
- But if members of the WikiProject are interested in your draft, they may help you improve it and improve your chances of its being accepted when it is reviewed. ColinFine (talk) 11:31, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- To clarify one point: it's not like an exam where you have to stop writing when the invigilator calls "time"/you submit the draft. You (and others) can continue to improve the draft until a reviewer(s) get round to it. Also, you can collaborate with others at any point, before submission, awaiting review, and after review. (The draft's Talk page is there for discussion and co-ordination of such collaboration.)
- Basically, submitted drafts go into a 'pool' and each (volunteer) reviewer chooses what they want to review next. They often go for "low-hanging fruit" where a draft is obviously inadequate (e.g. no citations at all) or obviously well-composed – drafts that look borderline are sometimes avoided for a while because they will likely take more effort to examine and critique. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 46.65.231.103 (talk) 12:44, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
The search box
What happened to the "search box" which was at the top of every page? Wikipedia cannot always read a user's mind, but a user can tell Wikipedia what specific page (such as the name of a town or a person) they are looking for. With the search box the user can go to the page they are looking for directly. 90.254.174.146 (talk) 12:17, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- For me, nothing has happened to it. It's where it used to be. And if I take a look while logged out, I see that it's still where it used to be when logged out. Ditto if I look while logged out and in the "mobile view". -- Hoary (talk) 12:29, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- [Edit Conflict] It's still there (and more central), but with the new default 'skin' is often reduced to just the magnifying-glass logo, which you need to click to expand the actual box. (Or so I understand; I myself apply an automatic url extension [if that's the right term] that retains elements of the old skin.) {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 46.65.231.103 (talk) 12:31, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

How do I create a page for myself?

- See your first article. But please bear in mind that Wikipedia is not Facebook, LinkedIn etc, and if the article lacks significant sourcing or has a clear conflict of interest, it is likely to be deleted very quickly. On creating my first article
Writing new articles for Wikipedia is always something I've had a passive interest in, but it's also something I've never done before. I realize that if I wanted to create an article I would be able to from the get go, as I have the user rights to do so; however, realizing that articles require a certain level of quality, and that I'm not going to meet the criteria flawlessly on my first attempt, I'm hesitant to just go ahead and make an article. I'm aware of the existence of WP:AfC, but from what I've seen there's a large backlog of articles waiting for review and I don't know if I want to wait that long for something that seems tailored to editors who do not have the sufficient permissions to create articles on their own in the first place.
My question, then, is this: say I want to create my first article, but I want it to be checked for quality before I'm confident enough to actually put it into mainspace. How should I go about this? Is there some sort of peer review system in place for draft articles (as I assume I can just prop up a draft in the Draft: namespace or in my sandbox) that I could use to get the opinion of other editors on my draft, without the lengthy waiting period that comes with AfC? I might be answering my own question here, but I don't know where I would find such a thing or a reasonable alternative to it in the event that that is the case. Cheers — theki (hit me up) 17:38, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- If your draft at WP:AFC is clearly notable it is likely to be accepted within minutes, if not then it can take longer, it isn't a queue, reviewers pick and choose, and obvious passes are easily reviewed. Theroadislong (talk) 18:03, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- In minutes? More likely weeks or months, regardless of its quality. There's always a big backlog. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:33, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- That's primarily my issue. I don't really mind a wait that long if it's what I have to do to wait for some sort of peer review, but I'm just curious if there are any alternatives— I don't have any Wikipedia editor friends who could look over it, so asking someone personally to informally review a draft is not an option for me. — theki (hit me up) 12:33, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Userbox
so I think I put the right stuff in the Userbox but how do I get the actual box to show up on my page because it's just the code on the page when I publish it and not the box?. DON'T CRY BY GUN'S N ROSES (talk) 21:41, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- @DON'T CRY BY GUN'S N ROSES: Userboxes are a form of templates. You are editing with VisualEditor where templates are added in a different way from the source editor. In your edit [5] you probably tried to use the source method, but VisualEditor surrounded your code with
<nowiki>...</nowiki>
which is a way to display source code instead of executing it. See Help:VisualEditor#Editing templates for how to add templates with VisualEditor, or see the end of Help:VisualEditor#Getting started: the VisualEditor toolbar for how to switch to the source editor. Multi-member district infobox
Hello, I'm not too experienced with infoboxes and I'm trying to use This one. Is it possible to use it in a way that will show multiple members (like if a single district sends 1 senator and 2 representatives), or will a different infobox template need to be used? If so, does the different template exist yet?

I moved Aphra to Aphra (moth) to create a dab page. Question about how to correctly include an article source
Hi there,
Some days ago, I wrote this Wikipedia article together with another person:
The current sources of information are written in the "external links" section, but there is another source that we would like to include in the article and we haven't been able to include it because Wikipedia seems to not accept YouTube links as sources. This Wikipedia article is about Venezuelan actor Asdrúbal Blanco, and the YouTube link we wanted to include is a recent interview with him where he says many things that we wrote on his Wikipedia page. How could we do to put the YouTube interview with the actor himself as a information source, and how could we fix the sources problem?
Best regards and thank you in advance. 2A0C:5A81:E209:7800:9880:59B6:B26A:BF18 (talk) 20:04, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

- I guess you were startled to see three footnotes to one sentence appear as “[2][3][1]”. This is nothing to worry about. When a reference is cited more than once, it gets only one number; and it so happens that the last of these three is a repeat. If you find it æsthetically displeasing, the cure is simple: move the last “<ref …/>” ahead of the other two. —Tamfang (talk) 23:03, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

- Are you offering to provide a recorded audio pronunciation? That is complicated. However if you are comfortable with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) or you are willing to learn it, you can create an IPA pronunciation. The current article has a completely broken IPA pronunciation and we should either remove it or replace it. IPA is fairly easy to learn and you can check your work by using any of several "IPA readers" in the web, such as this IPA reader. Since I don't know Greek and I don't know the pronounciation, I cannot do it. If you do create the IPA and cannot figure out how to correct the article, then please come back here.-Arch dude (talk) 15:36, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hello. Please see MOS:PRON, which recommends an IPA transcription, but does mention the possibility of an audio file, as Arch dude said, but it doesn't give much information about producing or using one. (See WP:Audio for more).
- I am not very skilled in Greek, but I think something like
{{IPA|el|ana bɛnaki psaruða}}
- which displays as
- Greek pronunciation: [ana bɛnaki psaruða].
- But I'm not sure of the precise vowels or the stress. ColinFine (talk) 16:36, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Citing art exhibition posters
Hi. I'd like to know if there is a way to cite a poster from an art exhibition. Specifically, for the YuYu Hakusho article. There is this poster from the "Togashi Yoshihiro -Puzzle-" exhibition (more photos are available here) detailing the actual serialization period of the series. The article currently just includes the cover dates of the issues where the series was published. I would appreciate any help or suggestions in this regard. Xexerss (talk) 15:59, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- You can perhaps use {{cite sign}}. But the question may arise whether the poster has been reliably published: if after the exhibition is over, it is found only where individuals or organisation have chosen to keep a copy, I'm not sure if it can be said to be published. ColinFine (talk) 19:15, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your suggestion. At the moment, I can only argue that the photos of the exhibition presented in the link I posted before can at least serve to verify the content of the poster itself. I understand that this is not ideal, but I think it is better than just citing the poster without showing what it looked like and the content it possessed. Xexerss (talk) 20:04, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

I represent Fairbanks Morse Defense. I tried to make a new page that was speedy deleted for our company.
There is already a Fairbanks Morse page for us that is live. When we try to update the information on this page the edits are removed.
What is the best way to move forward for us, should we complete a new page? If so, how should we make sure it is not deleted?
Should we make the edits to the already existing page? How do we make sure they are not removed?

Kim Zmeskal and the children
I just want to ask to put of personal life of Olympian Kim Zmeskal, and she have 3 children that she married Chris Burdette. 108.21.67.83 (talk) 20:41, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what you're asking - you yourself just added a paragraph on that subject to the article, two minutes ago. Though I'm not sure whether including the birthdates of minor, non-notable children is really appropriate. 57.140.16.45 (talk) 21:10, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Detailed personal information about non-notable minor children should be kept to a minimum, unless widely publicized by highly reliable sources based on the obvious consent of the parents. Otherwise, "notable person A married person B, and they have two children, a girl born in 2014 and a boy born in 2017" is adequate if properly referenced. Nothing more than that needs to be said. The children of notable people face enough challenges as it is, without making them easily searchable on a top ten website. Cullen328 (talk) 05:54, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
How to change Wikipedia Display to darkmode?
Hello there! I would like to know how to change the display to darkmode through the Wikipedia application for Windows.
Any constructive answer would be kindly appreciated! :) 2A00:6020:451A:8F00:6C45:B0A4:E579:4C1F (talk) 21:26, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

How to cite an already-gone IG story?
So I'm writing about AJR's "Yes I'm a Mess" music video. 3 weeks earlier, the band posted an Instagram story which hinted at the video's release. However, the video is now gone.
I found a tweet that reposted a screenshot from it.
I'm… kinda lost on how to cite the story. Baxyofh4rd (talk) 00:26, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Baxyofh4rd: You shouldn't. A screenshot on twitter of a deleted Instagram post is not a reliable source. and even if it wasn't deleted it would need to follow the guidelines at WP:SOCIALMEDIA. You will need to find other sources. RudolfRed (talk) 01:26, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
What's the bot called that identifies sources?
I installed a bot/java script thing that identifies by colour the sources used under references for any wiki article (green is a reliable source, yellow is an iffy source, red is not a reliable source), but I can't recall what the official name of this "thing" is called here... A user asked me about it recently, and I can't seem to find what it is or where to install it. Help? Can anyone point me to the page for this bot? Oaktree b (talk) 03:15, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Moving a draft page to live wikipedia page
I would like to know how to move a draft page to a live wikipeadia page if I don't have the more button that have the move button? I need assistance on how to move the draft page to live please. I do not see the move button on my menu. Frontlinestrat (talk) 09:02, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Frontlinestrat New accounts cannot directly create articles, and must submit their drafts for review. I've now provided the information to permit you to submit the draft, on the draft itself(this is provided automatically if you use the article wizard). If you were to submit it now, though, it is not likely to be accepted, as it is highly promotional and several parts are unsourced. Please see Your First Article. 331dot (talk) 09:22, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- If you are connected to this person, that needs to be disclosed, see WP:COI and WP:PAID. 331dot (talk) 09:23, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Since you are evidently part of Frontline Strat, an organisation founded by Matinyarare, you must, before you do anything else, do two things:
- Change your username to a name that does not suggest that it represents an organisation. All accounts are personal. You don't have to use your real name (I do, but many editors don't), but it needs to be your personal account, used only by you as an individual. "Joe at Frontline" would be an acceptable name.
- Make a formal declaration on your user page of your status as a paid editor. This is mandatory, and you will be in breach of Wikipedia's terms of service if you continue to edit without doing so.
- Then you will probably need to throw your existing draft away and start again, because I believe you have written it BACKWARDS.
- First, find sources wholly unconnected with Frontline Strat or Matinyarare that talk about him (not just about the company) in some depth. Wikipedia is basically not interested in what Matinyarare or his associates say or want to say, but only in what unconnected people have published about him. Ignore anything written or published by Frontline or Matinyarare, and anything based on a press release or interview.
- If you cannot find several such sources, you will know that he does not currently meet Wikipedia's requirements for notability, and any attempt to write an article about him will fail.
- If you can find the sources, then you need to forget everything you know about Matinyarare and Frontline and write an article based on what the sources say - even if you think they are wrong. (Do you see why editing with a conflict of interest is difficult)?
- You should probably read (and show Matinyarare) PROUD and BOSS as well. ColinFine (talk) 14:48, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

IP restricted sources
Hi, I've been unable to find what the policy is on referencing sources which are IP address restricted. Specifically: some movie articles reference reviews on Turner Classic Movies (http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/), but TCM appears to be available only for USA/Canada IP addresses, otherwise you get a "not available" page (I am in the UK). It seems unhelpful that WP should allow geographically IP-restricted source links. Can anyone advise or point me to policy? Thanks! Tobyhoward (talk) 09:51, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- There is no requirement that a source be easy or free to access. I'm not aware of any specific policy on geo-locked websites, but if you really wanted to verify the source material you are free to travel to the US and use the internet there to view it, just the same as you would need to travel to view a book in the Library of Congress or New York Public Library. I realize you probably don't want to do that(I wouldn't) but that's your option. 331dot (talk) 09:57, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) See WP:PAYWALL, specifically: "Do not reject reliable sources just because they are difficult or costly to access. Some reliable sources are not easily accessible. For example, an online source may require payment, and a print-only source may be available only through libraries. Rare historical sources may even be available only in special museum collections and archives. If you have trouble accessing a source, others may be able to do so on your behalf". Not everything is on the web, many older books for instance only exist as hard copies. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 10:13, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Supplemental to 331dot's reply: You can use a VPN to appear to be within the USA or Canada, it's probably cheaper than getting on an aeroplane! Martin of Sheffield (talk) 10:33, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- IP geo-locking is becoming commonplace for US news websites as well. They often say that it is because of the GDPR requirement in Europe. One possible way round this is to archive the link on the Wayback Machine or a similar service. It helps to archive the cite anyway.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:47, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks @331dot, @Martin of Sheffield, @Ianmacm for your helpful replies. Cheers Tobyhoward (talk) 11:06, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Module:Age - Date format
Hello there! I wanted to ask a question at the aforementioned module's talk page but I got an edit notice suggesting I should actually ask it here or on the VP. (Not sure if we want tech-questions to be delegated here but I'm following its instructions at the moment.)
I recently imported Module:Age in my homewiki. Everything is fine but it uses the ymd format and in Albanian (my homewiki) we use the dmy format. Can someone show me in which line do I make the change for that? Thanks in advance! - Klein Muçi (talk) 11:38, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Klein Muçi: Hi there! If you do not receive an answer here, I suggest posting your question at Module talk:Age. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 13:26, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- @GoingBatty, when starting a new topic on that page, an edit notice pops up which says
Talk pages in this namespace are generally not watched by many users. Please consider visiting the Help desk or the village pump for a more prompt response.
That's why Klein Muçi came here instead of posting there (as they explained above). That said, the talk page does seem to be semi-fairly-active, so a post there might actually get a response, in spite of what the edit notice says. 57.140.16.31 (talk) 13:38, 26 October 2023 (UTC)- Thank you - apologies to @Klein Muçi for not absorbing the first sentence before responding. - Not really obvious what you want. Does this not work at sq.wiki?
{{age in years, months and days|10 Jan 2001|20 Feb 2012}}
- 11 years, 1 month and 10 days
- —Trappist the monk (talk) 13:56, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Trappist the monk, that does but this doesn't: {{Birth date and age|28|01|1936|}}
This however does work: {{Birth date and age|1936|01|28|}}
I've said ymd above but apparently I should have said ydm. — Klein Muçi (talk) 15:04, 26 October 2023 (UTC){{Birth date and age|1936|01|28|}}
uses positional parameters which is not YMD format. Here are en.wiki, YMD format (1936-01-28) is allowed only in certain places, yet so far as a I know, we have not felt the need to rearrange these positional parameters to something other than the rational{{Birth date and age|<year>|<month>|<day>|}}
arrangement. Do you really really want to change that?- —Trappist the monk (talk) 15:51, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Trappist the monk, the thing is that in the Albanian official writing style guide there is only one order of acceptable date formats and that is DMY. We have rules for different styles of it, like how to act with abbreviations, punctuation and letter-number mixing but they all need to follow the DMY order. — Klein Muçi (talk) 16:05, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- Trappist the monk, that does but this doesn't: {{Birth date and age|28|01|1936|}}

List of My Three Sons episodes
Does anyone know why seasons 10, 11 & 12 cannot be viewed on the List of My Three Sons episodes page. They were there not long ago. The source code for the three seasons are there. They work perfectly when seen with preview. A lot of work went into those seasons and they should be viewable. Thanks for any help. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_My_Three_Sons_episodes# Entercontainment (talk) 14:17, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

- I'm not sure what "Don't Close" at the end of Template:Episode table. means. There are 12 seasons, it will be a large page. Is there any way there could be two List of My Three Sons episodes pages? Maybe one with Seasons 1 - 5 and another page with seasons 6-12. It's important that these seasons be viewable. Thanks. Entercontainment (talk) 14:32, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
