A few minutes ago I uploaded this image: to replace this one: as it was missing a few countries. I typed in the name of the old image as the source file name (as I wanted to replace it, not make two images), but I did that before I chose the file I wanted (by clicking on the 'Browse' button on the upload page), so when I chose my file, the source file name changed automatically, overriding what I had just put in. There's now two images, but this one: is the one that's correct. I've replaced all uses of the old image with the new one, so could someone (an admin, maybe?) delete the old image, or should I just add the 'redundant' template to it? Thanks! - Lewis R « т · c » 20:02, 1 September 2006 (UTC) |

*I don't think that's a good idea. The image you were trying to overwrite is on the Wikipedia Commons. I recommend you reinstate the links you altered and try to overwrite the image there. It would be a shame to have a free image like yours not be on the commons anyway. I'll see if I can do this for you. - Mgm|(talk) 20:32, 1 September 2006 (UTC) |

== Service mark as subject of Wikipedia entry == |
|||
When a registered service mark is the subject of a Wikipedia entry, and the Wikipedia entry recognizes expressly that this is the case (that the term is a registered service mark), does not the owner of the mark have the exclusive right to define the meaning of that term under Wiki guidelines if it desires without compromise? Under the law that is the case, ie., no one can offer the services under the marks name without consent from the owner and it needs to be done precisely as defined by the owner or it is unlawful. This is, of course, separate from appropriate comment in the entry on the service provided under the mark. But does not he owner get first crack at defining what his mark stands for? Also, are you aware of other service-marked entries that might be a good example? |

Forgetting to log in
Hey, i'm someone who keeps forgetting to log in before i edit, meaning a lot of my edits end up just being attributed to my ip address, making it sort of hard for me to keep track of my own edits.
Is there any way to like...'claim' an edit as being mine (of this user account) after the edit has been made and recorded as an anonmyous edit from my ip?
often i make an edit, and as soon as i've made it, i've realized that i haven't actually logged in. I don't suppose there's a function avaiable to re-claim that edit as being from my account? Yaksha 12:41, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
I've done this, too, and I'd love to know how to put it right! StuFifeScotland 14:51, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Might I suggest checking the Remember Me box? It can be found under the password box just before you login. By checking this box every time you come to Wikipedia you will be automatically logged in. Just make sure that if you clear your cookies you login again as that is where most of the login information is stored. Tarret 00:28, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

In creating an entry for Whiteley Village, the word "village" in the title is all lower case. Whilst not critical it is annoying. How do I rectify that situation so that when retrieved, the title comes up correctly as "Whiteley Village"
Thank you - Wikipedia at its best. Not only do you give the answer extremely quickly but by the time I get back to the article, the title has been corrected as you suggested and the external references have been properly formatted as well - awesome!

Here is what I know: The sign was the mark of the ancient Babylonian goddess ESSE pronounced ER-SHE/SHE-ER in approx. 2000 BC she was replaced by the god Marduk that absorbed all the other gods. She was She-mother earth the good god of food and water and good luck to the hunters and gathers. She began as the goddess of green growing things then to all life then to the goddess of all things her sign was the suastika/swastika which means all-the god of the six directions east-west-north-south-up-and down. However she remained in the language of the people to represent food and good luck-the word happiness means I have food. Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers of Chartley
Walter Devereux (c. 1431 - 1485) was a minor member of the English peerage and a loyal supporter of the Yorkist cause during the Wars of the Roses. He was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field, fighting for Richard III.
Walter was born in Weobley, Herefordshire. At the age of only thirteen, Walter married Anne Ferrers - who predeceased him by seventeen years - and became Lord Ferrers of Chartley in right of his wife in 1462. As a Yorkist, he held many offices under Edward IV. In 1461 and 1469, Walter was commissioner of array for Herefordshire, Shropshire and Gloucestershire, as well as Worcestershire in 1469. He also served in 1470 and 1471, as joint commissioner of array for Herefordshire, and then again in 1474 for Herefordshire and Shropshire.
Walter's military career was also thorough. He fought at Towton in 1461, where he was made a Knight of the Garter. He also fought at Barnet and Tewkesbury.
Walter Devereux supported King Richard III during Richard's reign, and fought at Bosworth on the 22 August 1485. There, Lord Ferrers commanded in the vanguard under John Howard, Duke of Norfolk, alongside Sir Robert Brackenbury and Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey. Devereux was slain during the initial fight with the Earl of Oxford's opposing van, fighting next to the young John, Lord Zouche. An in-law, Sir John Ferrers, was also killed at Bosworth.

Linking difficulties
There is an article entitled Atatürk's Reforms however I can't seem to create a link to it. The reason I bring it up is that there is an attempt to link to it in Turkish people that doesn't work and I was trying to fix it, but everything seems to be in order. If someone can figure out the problem please do so. Thanks. --24.225.95.249 08:09, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- The URL of the article is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atat%C3%BCrk%27s_Reforms --24.225.95.249 08:15, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- It seems to be linking properly for me...What exactly is the problem you're having? Sorry I can't help more. —Keakealani •talk•contribs• 08:18, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- In Turkish people there is a link to it, or an attempt to link to it, under the Culture subsection. It's written as language reforms which looks fine to me, but it doesn't work. - Works for me too! What page does the link go to? There is a redirect from Atatürk's reforms (small r) to Atatürk's Reforms (big R) - the second article is the one with content. Which is unfortunately wrong as second words in the title ahouldn't be capitalised but there you go :D. Other than that the links all look fine on the article you mentioned. --Errant Tmorton166(Talk)(Review me) 11:31, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- When I click on the link it takes me to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atatürk's_Reforms, but I can copy and paste the URL into IE and go to the correct article. Could there be a problem in the way IE(6) is rendering the link? Still, it seems very strange that I would be the only one having trouble and so far as I know it's never happened before.--24.225.95.249 19:00, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Merging_and_moving_pages needs a little more advice
I recently used templates to propose the merging of gene knockout and knockout mice. I refered to the help page Wikipedia:Merging_and_moving_pages for an idea of when it would be acceptable to go ahead an merge the pages but found no further advice. I would like someone to suggest whether it is appropriate to wait 30 days and then merge in the absense of objections or whether I need to obtain a minimum number of votes with at least two thirds in proposition in order to go ahead and merge the articles. If I could collect people's opinions as to an appropriate action then I will go ahead an edit the Wikipedia:Merging_and_moving_pages article to include this advice afterwards. --Username132 (talk) 11:42, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- Voting is evil. Try to get the opinion of the people who edited the article most recent/often and people on any related WikiProjects and try to develop a concensus. - Mgm|(talk) 11:46, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- No voting isn't evil that is a fallacy, voting is essential for concensus. The difference is most people assume a vote only has 2 or 3 possibilities. If you are asking someone to choose between merge or not merge they are voting. hmm rant over, anyway. As to the merge you mention yes get some opinions form people who have contributed and see what they think. If you get general agreement (as in most of them agreeing and the opposers not coming up with good reasons) thwen go ahead and do it. IF things get complicated with loads of discussion and argument then go for a straw poll to sort it out. If you get no real response within a week or 2 then go ahead and merge anyway! --Errant Tmorton166(Talk)(Review me) 11:54, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- I edited the above named article to inlcude the following advice
- "After proposing the merge, place your reasons on the talk page and check back in a couple of weeks for a response. You may be able to invoke a response by contacting some of the major or most-recent contributors via their respective talk-pages. If there is a clear agreement after two weeks, that the articles should be merged then go ahead and merge them. If there is no response after four weeks then go ahead and merge the articles." --Username132 (talk) 15:56, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Self-published source
Hi,
I am the author of an XML tutorial called Caffè XML (Caffè XML) and I would like to add the link of the tutorial on the XML page of Wikipedia under the section External Links. However, I red on the Wikipedia official policy that self-published sources are largely not accepted with the exception of well-known professional researches in the relevant field. Should I edit the page myserf or not?
I teach XML at the University "G. D'Annunzio" (Italy) and I do research on the XML field. You can find more about me on my personal web page at Massimo Franceschet Home Page.
Best regards,

- The best idea would be to post your suggestion for an external link on the article's talk page and then let other editors familiar with the subject decide if it merits inclusion. This is recommended by WP:EL. --Hetar 17:27, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
what is WYSIWYG page editing
I have seen many Wiki applications on the comparison chart and I don't understand the difference between having and not having WYSIWYG page editing. At first I thought it meant that I would have a little text editor but I visited one that says didn't have this option (WYSIWYG page editing) and it did have one. Can someone please help me with this and if you can clear it up bu showing me a wiki with and without this feature and the differrence. Thanks.
- It stands for "What You See Is What You Get". We actually have an article on the concept. - Mgm|(talk) 16:06, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- WYSIWYG is 'What You See Is What You Get', the software or interface that in theory shows you as you are editing what it will look like when it is published. In contrast to our WP edit window, in which we see text and formatting codes, and we have to preview in order to see what it will look like when it is published. Anchoress 16:07, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Help Desperately Needed for Writing Links to Contributions Page
I'm trying to make a link on my user page to my contributions page, but I don't know how to write the link. Could someone please help me? And while I'm on this subject, how do you write internal links where the link gives you a page that has a different title than the exact words you clicked on (example: having a link reading Greek redirect to the Greek Language page)?--The Great Honker 17:13, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Citing sources on the Shawn Green article
I have read the citing sources article WP:CITE/ES but I am still having problems actually doing it on the Shawn Green article. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help. Benje309 18:02, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- The <references/> tag (note the final /) stands alone, without repeating the references. And cite .... needs to be . That nearly fixes it. Notinasnaid 18:12, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- I've fixed it in the article. After the point you are referencing you should include the source within
- Then, in your references section you should include the <references/> tag which will produce show all the references you have cited in the article, like so:
==References== <references/>
- You can see the result in the article now. --Cherry blossom tree 18:33, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

- Yes. Often pictures are stored on commons: , to allow everyone to share. For some historical reasons, not all images on nl.wikipedia are stored on commons, however. The easiest way is to just download this image, and upload it back to commons, this should be legal to do. Kim Bruning 20:56, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Error in main, multilingual, page.
There is an error in the main multilingual page, www.wikipedia.org. "Slovencina" (which I believe is slovene) is listed twice. One links to the slovene, www.sl.wikipedia.org, the other to the slovak, www.sk.wikipedia.org. I believe the slovak link should be entitled "Slovensko" which means "slovak" in slovak.
Also, when I typed in the non-existent URL: http://www.en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Main_page, I was lead to the Wikimedia equivalent of the 404 page and there is a mistake on that page as well. Slovensko and slovencina are both listed there, but the links are inversed. Slovencina wrongly points to www.sk.wikipedia.org and Slovensko wrongly points to www.sl.wikipedia.org. It should be the inverse.
I don't know how to edit those pages, does anyone know how?
Thanks,

Image upload help
Hi, I'm a recent Wikipedian here. So far, I've helped with text edits of Wikipedia articles. I'd like to further contribute to the article Saki Nijino with a pic of said character, but the Wikipedia copyright rules are puzzling me like hell (and while I have a good level of English, it's still not my native language, so those complicated rules are even further puzzling me). The pic I've found directly comes from Konami's (game company which own the Tokimeki Memorial franchise, from which the character comes from) official website. Is the use of that pic is fair use, and thus useable in Wikipedia ? And if so, which tag should I use to go along with the pic ? -- AceNoctali 22:29, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Editing the Hinchliffe Stadium entry
There's a line describing the stadium that's set ABOVE the first "edit" link and that doesn't appear in the first edit box (i.e., when you click the first [edit] link). Like the rest of the original entry about the stadium I've taken the liberty of editing, it sounds a bit shall we say uninformed: "Hinchliffe...is an old stadium...etc..." But because it IS above the edit link, I don't seem to have the option of editing it....or do I? Does the original entry have to be deleted and the whole thing started over?141.153.165.218 22:40, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi!. You can choose to edit an entire article by clicking "edit this page" from the menu at the top of a Wikipedia article. This will allow you to edit the first section, as well as the entire article in one fell swoop. However, if you want to edit just the top section, locate the URL address of one of the edit links (you can do so by right clicking on one, choosing properties, and copying the url), then paste that address into your address bar and change the section number at the end, i.e., "section=1" to zero—"section=o"--Fuhghettaboutit 23:05, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- There is a user script available which will show a tab allowing you to edit the '0th section'. Create an account, and go to your monobook.js file - if you register the account name 'Account123', your monobook will be at User:Account123/monobook.js. Or you can follow this link: Special:Mypage/monobook.js. Then copy and paste the contents of Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Add edit section 0 into that page, purge your cache (instructions will be at the top of your monobook page), and you're done. IE 7 Font Style/Size
I'm sight impaired. When I'm using IE 7 to search/read Wikipedia I find the font style/size to be very hard to read -- this in spite of the fact that I've got IE 7's font setting on the largest size. Experiencing technical dificulties...
Hello, and thanks for taking the time to help. Your page has been my home page for ages now and I love your site. Only reciently, as in yesterday, have I had a problem. When I try to get to your English Home Page Only I get a prompt to save or not the page. I have tried doing so, but I still get the same windows prompt, and am unable to access it normaly. Far as I can tell, nothing on my end has changed and NO OTHER PAGE ANYWHERE does this. Bright ideas? Oh, I have gone to saved links I have to your content and they all work fine. Please contact me at Andrew(dot)Blikken(A)gmail(dot)com Email address obfuscated to prevent eternal spamming :)--Deon555talkReview 01:34, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if I completely understand your problem, but is it possible you're right-clicking when you try to get to the Wikipedia home page? That could give you a menu asking if you want to save the target page or not. -- Natalya 02:25, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Internet Explorer tries to save Main_Page instead of opening
Hi Guys, not sure if anyone has had this but when surfing from this page: http://www.wikipedia.org/ and clicking on the English button IE give me a prompt "File download. some files can harm your computer etc etc. File name: Main_Page File type: From: en.wikipedia.org would you like to open the file or save it to your computer?" I then try to select open which then asks me what program do i want to use to open Main_Page
Any ideas? have just patched IE up to the hilt but hasn't changed behaviour. Firefox just works, but unfortunately the company uses IE as standard :|
Cheers Sean
Thanks for your response. I don't have a login so don't have preferences. This behaviour seems sporadic, sometimes it opens the english wikipedia, sometimes it doesn't and prompts for download. I work in support of MS platforms and have had a job logged to me from a client. So far only wikipedia pages appear to exhibit this symptom. IE 6 - multiple versions are effected. Sean
Problems getting to a page.
Every time I try to search the Wikipedia say for loopback once I click on result it asks me if I want to download loopback file? If I do it’s just a binary file if I look at it using WinHex.
Not sure what the problem is why I’m not getting to the page?

- "which I remember to have been produced by the Macanese government." could be a problem. Memories have made mistakes in the past. If it's made by a commercial ad-creator we're probably out of luck. Perhaps someone can contact the airport and ask? - Mgm|(talk) 07:28, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Corporations Listing
I am concerned that companies are using the medium as a naked form of advertising - see Nationwide Building Society for example. Can any corporation promote itself like this? Best regards
- No, Wikipedia has a strict policy against advertising. As far as I can see Nationwide Building Society isn't abused to promote the company, although I will change the opening line. Anyway, since this company appears to be "the largest building society in the world with approximately 11 million members, 15 million accounts and employs 15,500 people across the UK" and since "it is the only UK building society to clear its own cheques, and the only UK financial institution to offer completely fee-free transactions (both electronic and cash withdrawals) worldwide with their VISA branded cards." means it's noteworthy for inclusion, at least in my own opinion. - Mgm|(talk) 07:23, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
writing articles
Why do you have to make it so hard? I have tried to add articles on two poets. One - Catherine Fisher - was deleted by someone called Adam Bishop due to "copyright violation". But all the stuff on it came from her web site, which I wrote, with her agreement! The other, on Paul Henry, has a note saying "please wikify as suggested in style guidelines". I can't see how it contravenes them and frankly the bloody things are so long that no one with a job/life would have time to read the lot. That's the last time I try....
- Thank you for your contribution, and sorry you were disappointed. On copyright violations: anyone could say they wrote stuff, and so you have to prove claims to own what you write, quite thoroughly. Look at it the other way round: suppose someone went to your site, and copied all your work and claimed to have written it. Copyright is vital, and you should be happy, as a creator, that Wikipedia is diligent in protecting it. This is why it's generally preferred to rewrite even your own material. The other note doesn't mean you have to do it. As a new editor, you won't know how to wikify, but if you stay you'll learn. Remember that it's a collaborative project: someone else is likely to wikify it. In fact, that is already happening. Notinasnaid 09:28, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- As a member of WikiProject Wikify maybe I can help. Many articles such as the one you wrote have good content but need reformatting with section headings etc. Also words can be linked to specific Wiki articles to provide other information. Article or Section may require Cleanup
Dear Wikipedia, I have just read the Wikipedia article on the Fairbanks House, Dedham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairbanks_House,_Dedham), and noted that a note is included at the beginning of the article stating that "To meet Wikipedia's quality standards, this article or section may require cleanup." I am not the author of the article, and have never contributed to Wikipedia. However, I am the current Director/Curator of the Fairbanks House, and am definitely concerned to make sure that the information on the House remains available to Wikipedia users. Is it possible for you to let me know what cleanup needs to be made in order to meet the quality standards? Is that something in which it would be useful for me to become involved? Thank you, Alex Service, Director/Curator, the Fairbanks House

Wikilinks in different versions of English
Hello. If I discover a page with a red link because the link and the page title are spelled in different versions of English (e.g. the link is spelled in British English but the article is titled in American English), what is the proper course of action? Should I 1. Change the spelling on the page? 2. Make it a piped link to the correct page? or 3. Create a redirect from the British spelling to the American spelling? — Michael J 19:18, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Articles are written in the type of English that is relevant to the subject. So a page on Doctor Who should be in British English, Statue of Liberty in American English. Either piped links or redirects work. Personally, I would use redirects so other people who use the different spelling will have the advantage of the redirect in articles afterwards. - Mgm|(talk) 19:26, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- In general, all common alternate spellings can be redirected, like Mgm said, to aid in the ease of searching for users in the future. You'll probably want to add the R from alternate spelling template to the redirect, too. —Keakealani •talk•contribs• 22:52, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Downloading Wikipedia
I was reading an article in Make DIY Magazine from August of last year where they tell you how to make a portable encyclopedia using wikipedia and something like a palm-pilot. In the article it describes how to upgrade the device, and it says that he downloaded Wikipedia (at the time it was about 500,000 articles), and then transferred it to the device. I believe the article said that it only took up about 400-500 MB.
My question is; How do you download Wikipedia(all 1,000,000+ articles) for use offline? (aside from saving every single article individually)
- I'm sure there's software that'll do it, for example the Encyclopodia. To download Wikipedia you'd have to copy the database; see Wikipedia:Database download. Ziggurat 23:46, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

--Fugabutacus 00:02, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- You can simply go to an article with an infobox that fits your purposes, go into edit mode, copy the code of the box, paste it into the artilce you want to add it to and change the parameters for that article's information. You can also explore various types of blank infoboxes at Category:Infobox templates.--Fuhghettaboutit 00:37, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Adding a disambiguation to a page with only one current meaning
Hello all, thanks for any help:
at www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Always_Ready , the only thing that comes up is a Hong Kong Television show. However, I would like to add another meaning to this, a new 2006 book that just came out through Xlibris, also called Always Ready. Now, this is my first time adding to wikipedia. Here is the evidence I am going to use in citing: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14081404/ . Pretty much, I would like to create another disambiguation for 'Always Ready' that would be a short explanation of this book, but of course would be secondary to the TV show...for example, maybe if anyone went to www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Always_Ready they would be initially be directed to the TV show, but on top it would say: "if you are looking for the spy novel Always Ready, click here" or however that normal link away goes.
How could I add this second page?
Thanks so much! ChowderInopa 01:40, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- You want Otheruses4. See Wikipedia:Disambiguation for more info. MECU≈talk 01:49, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Self-published books, especially the ones for which you have to pay to get them published, are generally not considered notable. Make sure the CIA review and MSNBC article and the CIA review are included in the article to avoid deletion. Also, a short line to indicate any notability the author may have would also help. - Mgm|(talk) 04:51, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Newbie unable to stay registered when editing an Image page
I just became a registered user, ID docduke. I have confirmed my email address.
I made a really trivial change (ar -> an) in the text of:
title=Image:Construction_of_Golden_rectangle.svg&action=edit§ion=1
When I was looking at the page, it showed me as logged in. However, when I attempted to edit a section, the edit screen came up telling me that I was not logged in. The change was made, but after the edit was saved, I noticed that there was no "history" tab on the page, so there was no way to determine whether the edit was attributed to my ID or my IP address.
While looking at the FAQs before posting this, I tried a section edit button, and it worked normally (by normally, I mean like the MediaWiki I have installed on another of my home computers).
Is there something odd about the "Golden_rectangle" page? Do I need to do something special to remain "logged in" during editing that page? If this problem is new to you, how can I document the problem if someone wants to look into it?
Thanks!
- You say that editing worked on a MediaWiki hosted on a home computer. Have you checked your browser settings to make sure cookies from external sites are enabled? Also, have you tried editing another page (the sandbox, for example) on Wikipedia? Let us know how it goes. Cheers, Tangotango 01:50, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- What page did you try and edit? Construction_of_Golden_rectangle.svg doesn't seem to exist. MECU≈talk 01:53, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. You tried to edit Image:Construction_of_Golden_rectangle.svg, which is not hosted on the English Wikipedia - it's an image included from Wikimedia Commons. At the moment, you need a separate account to edit Commons pages, and logins are not synchronised - that is why you found yourself logged out. The history can be found at [1]. - You can tell a Wikipedia-hosted image from a Commons-hosted image by looking at the tabs at the top of the page - if the "image" tab is red, then it's a Commons image. If blue, then it's a Wikipedia image. Commons images are also designated by the "This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. The description on its description page there is shown below." banner that appears under the image. Cheers, Tangotango 02:25, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Will I be liable for editing a legal topic (e.g., criminal law, torts, contracts) if someone else relies on it and is harmed by doing so? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.139.41.220 (talk • contribs)
- You are accountable for the changes you make, but whether you are liable is a legal question which I cannot answer. I'm not a lawyer. - In the first instance, post a comment on the article's talk page, raising your concerns. It is worth reading through the existing talk page to see if the concerns have already been discussed. Give at least a week, I think, before any further action. Notinasnaid 07:53, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Really? Then you have a lot more patience than me, lol. Unless it's an issue being actively worked on as evidenced by talkpage activity, I just slap a tag on the article and explain why on the talk page. Anchoress 08:15, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- I suppose it depends on how egregious it is. But there is a particular problem of people who just add the tag to the article and go away without adding anything to the talk page at all. I consider this little better than vandalism. Notinasnaid 08:24, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, I agree. I'm inclined to remove unsubstantiated tags. It is vandalism of a sort, IMO. Anchoress 08:27, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

I have edited many song articles on Wikipedia by adding the lyrics of the song. However, many of these articles are swiftly changed to remove the lyrics. marking for deletion an article which was previously deleted and resurfaced
- I've just stumbled on this article, which is nothing more than a vanity article. I was trying to mark it for deletion but it seems that it was already deleted in the past but was rewritten, which hinders the AfD process. So, what option do I have to re-brand it as a AfD? What is the normal procedure to mark AfD an article which has a history of being deleted and rewritten? --Mecanismo | Talk 22:21, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- There's two answers. When nominating a good page for a second (or later) AfD, you can use afdx (example: 2nd or 3rd). In the case of this page, db-repost might be more appropriate. :) Luna Santin 22:26, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! And it seems that someone already deleted the article. Very nice. But isn't it also possible to lock the article or some other procedure to stop that from happening? --Mecanismo | Talk 17:02, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

people from omaha nebraska
I have a cousin that is a singer and actor....he is not listed with the people from omaha nebraska....He is a member of the group The Platters...how do i get him on the list
- Just go to Notable natives of Omaha, Nebraska, click the edit this page at the top of the page, and edit it. WP 01:00, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
- Note that people added to the list should be noteworthy enough for their own individual article. See WP:BIO for our guidelines on notability of people generally - WP:MUSIC also has guidelines on notability of bands. If your cousin was a member of the The Platters, as in the famous rock and roll band of the 50s and 60s, he would certainly be notable enough, but I'm guessing he's a member of a different one. --Sam Blanning(talk) 01:02, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

- There are three tags. The first and second are essentially the same, asking you to link to other articles. That seems to be done already. The third however asks you to establish notability for the band. Just go through the guidelines for Wikipedia:Notability (music) to understand more about it. Otherwise the article stands the risk of being tagged for deletion on the grounds that it is not notable enough to be included in Wikipedia. - You should have said:
- "Until Escape is a British grunge-specializing rock band. Formed in Brighton, United Kingdom in 2005, the band has three members. Davey Redfern is the band's guitarist and vocalist, while Rob Kempson plays bass guitar and Mark Wyss is the drummer of the band."

modifying public domain images
The description of PD-USGov-CIA-WF says the image has been copied and/or modified (from the CIA World Factbook). Is there any point at which I am obliged to indicate by some other tag because of extensive modification of the public domain original?
I in fact just want to take portions of CIA WF map images, and add a placename and an arrow pointing to a location, and for this I would understand I just need the PD-USGov-CIA-WF copyright tag, but what if I were to modify the image further, such that I think it would be misleading to suggest the current image was 'copied' from the particular source without some acknowledgement of the modification?
Is there any Wikipedia protocol/"best use" regarding this procedure: taking a public domain map and modifiying it to identify/highlight a particular area (i.e., the subject of a wiki article)? I find a lot of maps in Wikipedia articles would be more effective if they simply had an arrow added. I'd think this would be a fairly simple thing to do: is it avoided by experienced wiki article-editors for some reason I am not aware?
I've cut out a portion of a CIA World Factbook map on my computer, and added a name and an arrow. It is my intention to upload the image (to the Wikimedia Commons?), then place it in an Wikipedia article.
Thank you for any help with my question(s), and any additional information you may think of assistance with my plans. Jauntymcd 18:18, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

I am currently editing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RTS_Index and have a company name which is "Mobile TeleSystems". The wikipage for this company is located at Mobile_Telesystems. How do I edit it, so that the link will show to where it needs to be directed?

- If you want to link to an article which isn't exactly named in the article, you could use Wikipedia:Piped links. (Mobile TeleSystems). There's no need to include the underscore. Also, you could consider moving "Mobile Telesystems" to fix the capitalization and link as normal. - Done. For future reference, you can add articles to categories by adding, for example, to the bottom of the article. The bit after the pipe is the 'sort key', which makes sure it appears under 'G' for 'Georgetown' rather than 'L' for 'List'. [2] --Sam Blanning(talk) 00:40, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

The bearded lady of Guildford
The bearded lady of Guildford does exist, simply ask anyone who lives or works in Guildford 86.2.251.168 12:13, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think you should read our verifiability policy. WP:RS, WP:V. Asking someone in a certain geographical location is not the way we should go about verifying information. If something should get an article we need to distill information from secondary sources, meaning someone should already have written about this lady. - Mgm|(talk) 12:32, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- Also, not everyone is suitable to get a entry in an encyclopedia. The article Bearded Lady of Guildford didn't explain why she was notable; in other words, how she would fulfill the requirements we have for biography articles. (WP:BIO). - Mgm|(talk) 13:11, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Missing diacritic in page title
I created a page that includes a diacritic in the title. I didn't like the way the system handled the URL becaue of the accent (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Rosariolibrarian/Pura_Belpr%C3%A90)
So when I moved my page to the main area of wikipedia, i left the accent out (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pura_Belpre).
however that creates 2 further problems: 1. now the entry itself is missing the accent in the heading 2. when others refer to the entry by its correct name, the link doen't go to the entry i created. See for example, see the reference in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REFORMA to Pura Belpré
I was loooking at other entries with accents to try to figure this out (e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriel_Garcia_Marquez0 but i could not.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rosariolibrarian (talk • contribs) .
- Hi! I have moved the page to the title with the diactritic. It now appears under the name Pura Belpré. By doing so, this automatically created a redirect for the unaccented name, so if someone searched for the name without the diacritic they will still find the article. I have also edited all pages on Wikipedia including REFORMA so that her name is listed properly. I hope this is what you were looking for.
- A few other notes: Please sign talk page posts by typing four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will automatically add your signature and a time stamp. When you want to link to other articles on Wikipeda, instead of typing the URL all you need do is surround the name of the article with doubled brackets. So to get the link REFORMA I typed REFORMA. The URL name doesn't matter much in the grand scheme, both because internally, we make links as I just explained, and externally, if someone searches Google for instance, once this page gets indexed, they'll find the title and can link straight to the article. I think you might get some great tips from trying the Wikipedia:Tutorial. Responding to your post from my talk page, while I typed this, you're most welcome.--Fuhghettaboutit 14:22, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
can factual errors made by a documentary be pointed out in the documentary article, without being original research?
The terrorstorm documentary makes a number of factual errors in its account of the 7/7 bombings. I was hoping to add details of these to the documentary's wikipedia article, in a similar way to what has been done for loose change (video). However, this has been removed as original research. The list of the errors in the film does draw largely from primary sources, so is it therefore correct to call it original research?
I have posted a similar account of the errors in the film on my blog - I thought the primary sources would be more credible references, but would I do better ot link to my blog in order to avoid the contribution to the article being original research?
Thanks,
Jon
- No. Never link to your own blog. It's a conflict of interest. What were the primary sources you cited? Can't you find secondary ones? How do you know the documentary is false and not your source? - Mgm|(talk) 14:36, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks - that's really helpful. Makes sense re. the conflict of interest. I did look for secondary sources, but couldn't find them.
I'd trust the sources cited because the overwhelming weight of the evidence is with them and not Terrorstorm - to give an example from the article "Terrorstorm states that de Menezes was shot more than ten times in the head. He was actually shot seven times in the head and once in the shoulder [3]. 11 shots were fired in total [4]." Other errors (for example, stating that de Menezes purchased a copy of the free Metro newspaper), were sufficiently obvious I wasn't sure if they needed sourcing? Jon m

I'm thinking about starting my own small wiki, and I'm trying to figure out how to make a template that whenever used would make that page's background, text, and links (both unused and used) different colors. I tried to make a template with .div style="background:#000066; color:#66CCCC; font color:#33ffff; link:#33ffff; vlink:#33ffff;". (replace the .'s with <>) but it doesn't work. --blm07 23:52, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

They specialize in knowledge questions, and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that's what this Help Desk is for). Foreign language references
I'm curious to hear your opinions on foreign language references. I'm aware of what WP:REF says about this topic. For some topics comprehensive references only exist in foreign languages. Since not every reader can verify foreign-language links, ntm books, is it always necessary to also add references in English (even if they only cover a fraction of the article's scope)? Or is it acceptable to not feature any English language references at all on certain topics? Thank you in advance for responding. ---Sluzzelin 00:27, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- I imagine if it is at all possible to find an English source, that would be the best, since you're right, it would be very hard to verify unless you speak that language. Alternatively, I think you could write an article written in the language of the source in that language's Wikipedia (if that makes any sense >.>;) and then translate it into English with a citation that it's a translation, you could get away with a bit more foreign citations. Of course, it would be ideal to get English references for an English encyclopedia, but if that's impossible I don't think it should stop you from writing an article with a different language source. —Keakealani •talk•contribs• 04:04, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Use as many English references as you can to support the English readers. - Mgm|(talk) 04:55, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Adding a disambiguation
If there is currently only one meaning to a page, and I wish to add a disambiguation, how can I make the second page? How is it decided which page has prominence?
- Usually, the more notable page is given precedence, or if both pages are about equally as notable the disambiguation page is the default page when the term is searched. You can read up on how to create disambiguation pages at Wikipedia:Disambiguation. Basically, you would create a page Blah (disambiguation) and list all the possible articles for that term, then edit the appropriate articles to link to that page. —Keakealani •talk•contribs• 05:44, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- To distibguish different articles, you put modifiers behind the title to clarify which of the meanings you intend. For example, for an article about the fictional band Foobz, you could have Foobz (band) Foobz (album) (for their self-titled album) and Foobz (film) (for the film made about them). You'd list all of these at the disambiguation page located at Foobz. You only create Foobz (disambiguation) if one of the meanings has clear precedence over the others. - Mgm|(talk) 11:13, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Payment
How does Wikipedia deal with contributors' claims to receive compensation for the content they create?
- When contributors press the submit button they agree to license their contributions under GFDL (note the line below the edit box), therefore any claims for compensation is invalid. --WinHunter (talk) 06:45, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
addition to books or references section
I have tried this several times for several articles. I wrote in the author, title, publisher, date etc. What do I do next to have this actually put in the article? Is there something I have to click? Am I supposed to click Save Page for this? Or does it take some time for the addition to appear on the actual page?
- This seems to be your first contribution under this name. If you added as an IP, then you need to add a references section towards the end of the article and write <references/> below the section. Then you can see the books, provided you added them according to WP:Cite -- Lost(talk) 08:28, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
User contributions on watchlist?
Is it possible to have your watchlist notify you when a specific user contributes? I have just cleaned up a whole lot of junk from one particular IP, and I expect them to strike again at some point. (In fact, there are a few IP addresses I would like to monitor!) I read something about using CSS and enhanced recent changes, but was wondering if there was an easier alternative? Thanks! -postglock 09:47, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Colors in infoboxes etc
As the question arises in the dutch village-pump, is there on the English Wikipedia any concensus over which colors to use in infoboxes etc. Is there a guideline of some sorts? Aleichem 11:05, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

- Which colors to use in boxes is generally decided by the relevant WikiProject. If I remember correctly, they exist in the Dutch Wikipedia too, but I could be wrong. Take a look at our list of Wikipedia:WikiProjects or Wikipedia:Infoboxes and get the projects over there to organize the look of the tables (perhaps use the same colors as we do so you can easily copy what we have done already. - Mgm|(talk) 11:49, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Sangharakshita
The article on Sangharakshita seems to me to be written by a disciple, and as such he/she is using the rules and regs of Wikipedia in a nit-picking way to edit out criticisms of Sangharakshita. This is no more than I would expect. I have a suggestion for Wikipedia policy, which is that authors should DECLARE AN INTEREST in this sort of instance. I would be even happier to see disciples banned from being the authors of their teachers' biographies on Wikipedia! It seems to contravene the spirit of it. The article on Rajneesh is much worse! Dave Simmonds
- The thing about a wiki is that it can be edited by anybody. As a good faith editor, what you need to do is, go to the talk page of the article and discuss what content you feel needs to be modified. If that doesnt work then there are many ways for dispute resolution that you can adopt. In case you have a policy proposal, this is the place to do so -- Lost(talk) 12:44, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- The problem with your idea is that it's mostly disciples who are interested in the article to begin with. You should enforce WP:NPOV and tell that NPOV doesn't mean the article can't have criticism. Criticism is allowed as long is it is from a reliable source. - Mgm|(talk) 17:27, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Customising my signature
Hello, how do I go about customising my signature? I've read WP:SIG, and it says you do it by typing in the signature box in preferences. But I've done that, and it still doesn't want to look how I want it to look when I type the four tildes. I just want to add a superscript tag and a link to my talk page. Thanks. --Richardrj 12:24, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- From what I know, customising signatures needs a bit of html knowledge. In case you know html, then you can simply write the code by going to your preferences. In case you dont, then the best thing would be to copy a signature that you like and suitably modify it by adding a few tweaks and experimenting. That's what I did. You will find a bit of help at WP:SIGHELP -- Lost(talk) 12:52, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks very much, yes I already did that and funnily enough I want my sig to look like yours with a superscript link to my talk page. But I typed in Richardrj(talk) into the signature field in my preferences and it just comes out looking like that when I test it, not with the HTML. --Richardrj 12:57, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Cleanup tag
Hello everyone!! It has been while I haven't asked a question. So, apparently there is a guy, (should I say the name?) and he tagged Tourism in Indonesia with a cleanup tag. Some contributors, including me, have managed to edit the section that has been tagged about three days ago. Now, because we want to nominate it on WP:GA, the template really need to be removed, but this guy hasn't replied my message or given any response. So, what should I/we do? We is the Indonesian WikiProject guys :P. Cheers -- Imoeng 12:46, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Imoeng, ideally the person who added the tag should also have explained why he added the tag. This has been said before in this forum and elsewhere that just adding tags is not good enough. If he mentioned the problems that he sees and if you sorted them out, then you can remove the cleanup tag. -- Lost(talk) 12:56, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- The person who originally added the tag doesn't "own" it. If the concensus in the talk page is that the article is cleaned up, and the original poster does not have input or suggestions, it is right to remove the tag. Overall (just my opinion), I'd say it could benefit from improvements in English grammar (especially but not only the last paragraph), but doesn't really merit the tag. Slow improvements in grammar is the normal editing process, not requiring a tag unless it is incomprehensible. Notinasnaid 12:59, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well, that person did not give any specific suggestion kind of thing. He just put that and thats all about it. I've sent him a message though. So, I will just ask you guys, is that "clean" enough?

- Well, I've been over it and fiddled with the grammar. I hope it is improved. There were a few cases where the English meaning was not completely clear, so it should be reviewed again by someone familiar with the subject. There is one issue remaining. The reference in the final paragraph does not seem to support the sentence it is attached to. It is about Yogyakarta but does not seem to support the assertion that its culture is notable. I hope this helps. Notinasnaid 16:52, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Categories
How do I edit a category box if it doesn't have an 'e' on it which takes you to the edit page?
- I am not sure what you mean, but if you want to see an article under a category, you need to add the category to the bottom of the article. The article will then be seen in that category automatically -- Lost(talk) 14:39, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry I didn't make myself clear enough. For instance, this template http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Southwest_Asia
has the v-d-e, for view, discuss and edit. However, some templates like that one, do not have the v-d-e on them. Why is this and how can they be edited? Thanks.
- The v-d-e links (or something similar) are optional, and are often added for convenience when a template is first created and likely to require tinkering. The links are often removed after the template is established and stable so as to discourage changes that may cause problems—this applies particularly to templates that are used in many places on many pages.
- To get to a template (to view, discuss, or edit it) just put Template: in front of the name of the template in the search box at left and click Go. To create a link to a template page (in a discussion, for example), you can do the same thing. For example, Template:Southwest Asia. Please note that since templates can appear (be transcluded) on many different pages, changes to 'mature' templates should be made very carefully. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 15:18, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Copyright for your own images simplified!
There is seemingly a lot written about copyright here. No doubt the level of detail is necessary. However would someone have a straight forward answer to my question, which is that I want to upload and use a few images in articles on Wiki. I have no problem with others using them provided credit is given in all cases and that they are not used for commercial gain without the express permission from me. What copyright tag should I cite? Many thanks in advance. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Petermalewski (talk • contribs) .

Update on Adding a Link
Dear Wikipedia, On your article regarding the country singer, Hank Williams, Jr., I posted a request to add a link to one of his fan websites and/or an on-line petition to induct him into the Hall of Fame. Could someone please review this request and get back with me? Thanks. My e-mail address is (removed to save on spam)
- The nice thing about Wikipedia is that you can add things on your own without having to ask official permission - in fact, that's the way things work around here. Feel free to add the link to the article on your own. If you're not sure how, then you can go ahead and click right here and leave the information on my talk page; I can then insert it for you. It's probably best to go with the fan website, as we're not really here to promote any particular cause or activity. Tony Fox (arf!) 16:22, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Typing the signature text
This might sound like complaining, but I'll write it anyway. On my Finnish keyboard, it's a bit difficult to type the four tildes: ~~~~ needed for my signature. For each tilde, I have to first press AltGr + the accent key after å, and then press space. This can lead to typos when done four times in succession. Why can't wiki markup code use some other character? I know I could just click on the "Sign your name" link at the bottom but then I'd have to take my hands off the keyboard. JIP | Talk 18:14, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- In the edit window do you have the row of edit buttons over the textarea? There's a button that adds the four tildes with one click, third from the right. Alas, it also adds two hyphens by default. · rodii · 18:50, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- But that does also require this user to take his hands off the keyboard. I havn't got a clue where the tilds are on this Dutch thing, so I'm stuck using those buttons as well. How many keyboards out there, don't have a simple enough tild key? If enough people have this problem, it might be worth looking into. --Username132 (talk) 20:53, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- I doubt we'll find any key which isn't already used and which is conveniently accessible from all keyboard - which is why the "signature" button in the edit window is there in the first place. Oh, come on, you have to take your hands off the keyboard to click the "save page" button, is it really so much to ask that you do it to place your signature? Rodii's solution is a perfectly good one (there is even yet another link to the four tildes, below the Edit window, where it says "Sign your name: ~~~~". — QuantumEleven 06:02, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Judging by your response, I'm guessing that you have a tilde key on your keyboard... ;) To be fair, since my signature is usually the last thing I do before clicking save page, it doesn't really make much difference that I have to click a button; it's possibly just as quick as two dashes and four tildes... --Username132 (talk) 10:34, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

- Include nicely formatted links between < ref > tags (< / ref > to close), then add < references / > to the references section. This will sort all the references you used and put them in a list in the right order. To make these work in a real article, remove the spaces I included here on the help desk. To allow for multiple uses of a single references the tag can also have a name attribute ( ref name="nameofref"). You can use the same ref a second time by entering ref name="nameofref" / between those triangle brackets. I just wrote an article today which uses some references (In Dreams (2005 album)) and I added some to another article (Joseph McManners). Take a look at those to see how it works. Leave a message on my talk page if you need any more help. - Mgm|(talk) 21:18, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- A general piece of advice: If you're stumped by the help pages, go find a page that has a result similar to the one you're looking for (in your case, look for a page with some foot / endnotes, there are plenty out there). Take a look at the code that produces the result (by clicking on "Edit this Page", but not actually changing anything). Often, figuring it out this way is a lot easier than trying to do it 'from scratch' by using the help pages - once you've got the basics down, the help pages should suddenly become a lot clearer. --Graemedavis 21:28, 28 August 2006 (UTC) There is an article in Wikipedia on University of Basrah: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Basrah This can be found by clicking a link for University on the Basra article. However the search engine does not turn up this article - indeed it states that no such article exists. How can this be resolved?
reliable information
Hi there,
This question might be for the editors,
I've been using Wikipedia for a while (I love this website) but I recently found out that anyone can change stuff on the site.
What stops some kids from altering information from the site and putting non-sense information instead? What if they change dates or subttle things that you would not be able to pick up?
I'm just worried the information will no longer be reliable.
Jorge Concerned user
- We have a page that adresses this, but I forgot the link. I'm sure someone else will remind me of it. We have a lot of systems in place to catch nonsense and mean-spirited false information. Generally speaking, articles on well-known subjects are easily corrected when someone alters it because so many people are watching it. Obscure articles are less well watched, but with those you can check the Wikipedia:History to see who added what. Basically, you should treat Wikipedia like any other source. Be critical and ask yourself where the information came from. Follow the references the editors provided and see if you trust the sources. Wikipedia may be freely editable, but anyone can put up a website and although the publishing industry tries its best, books aren't infallible either. - Mgm|(talk) 22:02, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, anyone can edit on this site, but actually this is an advantage, because anyone can add and correct info, instead of a few selected people. (And some of our best editors and administrators ARE kids.) All information on Wikipedia should be verifiable and cite reliable sources. Also see Wikipedia:Replies to common objections. WP 22:09, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- And to address one particular issue you raised, there is no change which is too subtle to be picked up, because the software highlights the exact changes in each edit. -- Meni Rosenfeld (talk) 17:32, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
deletion policy
how soon after a failed attempt of proposing an article for deletion can one propose it again? thanks Rm uk 22:05, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- If someone removed a WP:PROD tag, and you still want to delete it, you have to take it to WP:AfD. WP 22:11, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- ...and if it's been considered at AfD, it's considered a good idea to wait at least one month before AfDing an article again. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 00:24, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Question about editing, etc.
First of all, thank you for your time.
I am confused about Wikipedia in general. A group of people are trying to get the word out about a mission we have for an artist (Hank Williams Jr.). We are wanting to link to the petition to the Country Music Hall of Fame and a link to the Unofficial Fan website that has TONS of exposure and almost 2000 members.
I have tried to "edit" and add the link, however, less than 24 hours later, the link is gone. Can someone please explain this to me. Maybe I am not doing this correctly.
Also, on the "discussion" page, we have made several requests about adding the link and no one has received an answer.
Could we please know how long it generally takes for someone to answer a question or request on the discussion page?
Thank you HankArmy

vandalism warning
There was a power outage at my home a few weeks ago and my IP address was changed when our modem reset. My ISP, comcast gives dynamic IP addresses. The previous user of my current address vandalized the Eastern orthodox church in february 2006 and now I am stuck with the warnings. Is there a way to appeal them? is my IP address logged when I am signed in? --Ted-m 02:11, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Your IP address is logged, but not publically. Certain users with CheckUser capability have the option to view recent edits on a certain IP address, but this will only be used if you are a suspected sockpuppet, which presumably you are not, so it shouldn't be a problem. I don't think those warnings will apply towards a block unless you were to vandalise using that IP. Don't worry, in other words. —Keakealani •talk•contribs• 04:26, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've checked up on my IP addresses and a few of them have been banned multiple times for vandalism. Luckily, my ISP doesn't switch me around more than once a month, so I don't hit IP blocks. Nothing to worry about. -- Consumed Crustacean | Talk | 04:30, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- In case you are stuck with a blocked IP address, feel free to contact any of the administrators here at Wikipedia. With some explanation, they'll probably unblock the IP address in no time. —Jared Hunt August 29, 2006, 12:25 (UTC)
copyright for fowloadable pics JPEG?
Do I need special permission to use a pic I found on wikipedia in my book, which will be published in Germany? Since this involves commercial use, what are the steps I need to undertake to obtain permission to use the pic?
Thanks
Josette
- Contact the uploader to see if they will release it to you under a commercial license (if they created it). If not (and the image is not fair use), your document will have to comply with the GFDL, which will mean releasing it under a very open license (permitting copying and etc.) You might not like that at all. If the image is not GFDL licensed in the first place, but is fair use, you'll have to contact the original source. -- Consumed Crustacean | Talk | 04:27, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Which picture is it? Link us, because although many of the pictures here are "fair use" pictures, many of them are also public domain and allows commercial use. —Jared Hunt August 29, 2006, 12:27 (UTC)

- Looks fine to me as well. Try clearing your cache and reloading your page (
Ctrl+Shift+Del
thenCtrl+R
) in Firefox. —Jared Hunt August 29, 2006, 12:21 (UTC)
- This is a problem with the cached copies of pages. The short-term fix is to WP:PURGE the page. This is NOT simply purging your browser cache, it is forcing the wikipedia server to rebuild the cached page that viewers see. Add ?action=purge to the end of the article URL. See various discussions at WP:VPT and also a discussion at WP:FN. Gimmetrow 13:44, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- There is another issue with the template transclusion database: many articles are listed as transcluding hundreds of templates they don't contain; this is fixed by editing/saving the page (a purge doesn't seem to work for this one). Some of these issues may be remnants of the recent WoW vandalism. Gimmetrow 13:58, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- It's fixed now. I don't know how it was fixed. It could have been something to do with one of the things you all mentioned. Thank you! Cabanes 01:59, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Possible talk page vandalism
I recently came across a user (who I won't name unless I can be sure that what he has done is vandalism) who has blanked his talk page twice; as far as I can tell, it was because some other users left unflattering, but not harassing (there was at least one personal attack, but another user removed it) comments on it.
I think this constitutes talk page vandalism, but I haven't been able to find anything about whether blanking one's own talk page (as opposed to someone else's, or an article's) is considered to be vandalism or not.
Clarification would be appreciated. CameoAppearance 12:12, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not exactly sure of the situation here, but I'm guessing if there is a legitimate reason for the blanking, it could be. One case I could recall is Purplefeltangel, whose discussions were deleted by request. —Jared Hunt August 29, 2006, 12:19 (UTC)
- Did the user show any signs of taking the unflattering comments to heart? - Mgm|(talk) 13:01, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- It's pretty much accepted that people have a right to do what they like to their own talk page. Guidelines are to archive discussions but stil... If he is removing warnings that is viewed in pretty bad light and generally not accepted (ends up with more warnings!). In all if there are nasty things being said then chances are he just doesnt want them there - suggest to him he archives instead of deleting. --Errant Tmorton166(Talk)(Review me) 13:14, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Correction: He only blanks the talk page of one of his subpages; however, he deletes comments of a similar nature from his own talk page (without completely blanking it every time), including what I think was a non-formalised warning about the content of his user page (I don't know if he's since removed the offending content or not). From the time June, 2000, there is deviation from what is claimed on www.swadhyay.org. Even prior to June,2000, the image of Pandurang Shashtri Athavale or Swadhyay was always glorified or exaggerated.
I am not out to defame Pandurang Shashtri Athavale or lower the image of Swadhyay. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and changing facts have to be incorporated in it.
Late Mr.Pandurang Shashtri Athavale is popularly known as Dada. Dada means elder brother in Marathi - An Indian Language spoken in State of Maharashtra. Here-in-after, I shall refer Pandurang Shashtri Athavale as Dada. Dada gave discourses upon message of Srimad Bhagwad Geeta - A scripture of Hindus. He motivated people to use one's god gifted abilities to speak, move, think, hear for selfless work which he called Kruti-Bhakti. Based on this principle/logic his followers known as Swadhyayees moved from house to house and went to Indian villages at one's own cost and spreaded the message of Srimad Bhagwad Geeta and nurtured these activities. The number of followers went on increasing and at present it could be in millions but that does not necessarily mean that the followers observe dictates of Srimad Bhagwad Geeta henceforth shall be referred to as Geeta.
Dada also motivated Swadhyayees to involve in money producing experiments for spread of renovation of Vedic culture. Experiments known as "Yogeshwar Krushi", "Shree Darshan", "Vruksh-Mandir", "Amrutalayams", "Matsya-Gandha" and so on. The financial returns along with donations received were collected in nearly 100 trusts created for Swadhyay activities. The trustees were dedicated Swadhyayees and Dada was not a trustee. Dada used to say that The President of Swadhyay activities was God (Lord Yogeshwar).
Around June, 2000, Dada told trustees that The Swadhyay activities were his ownership and he was handing over reign of These activities to her adopted daughter Smt.Jayshree a.k.a. Dhanshree Srinivas Talwakar popularly known as DidiSwadhyayee 03:24, 30 August 2006 (UTC). Simultaneously, all the neutral trustees from all trusts were removed and replaced by Didi and her husband Srinivas Talwalkar a.k.a. Rao Saheb. Dada used to take blank resignation letters from the trustees in advance.
This was not well received by old dedicated Swadhyayees who had helped in foundation and nurture of these activities from day 1.
This was protested by old Swadhyayees and it resulted in violent attacks on old Swadhyayees by comperatively new Swadhyayees. The first attempt had taken place on 28th January, 2001 on Mahesh Shah an industrialist.
After an year, In June, 2001, The Hon. Ex-Chief Justice of High Court at Ahmedabad and Andhra Pradesh declared to media that Didi was using money and muscle power against old Swadhyayees, therefore he was submitting his resignation to Dada. He told the media that The funds of the trust in securities were valued at Indian Rupees Two Hundred Crores and property valued at Indian Rupees Five Hundred Crores. All the facts here-in are documented in Indian Newspapers. This fact had appeared first in "Gujarat Samachar" and later in all Gujarati newspapers.
Subsequently, number of old Swadhyayees became victims of violence and faced false criminal cases. The criminal cases were over 100 filed in rural Gujarat & Maharashtra ( Indian States) against various old Swadhyayees and/or ex-trustees. In 22 identical cases, an appeal was preferred by one Pankaj Trivedi and others in High Court at Ahmedabad. The High Court ruled in the matter in favour of Pankaj Trivedi and quashed all criminal cases at one go. The High Court further observed and recorded that the language of all 22 cases were word by word same and cases had been filed by different persons miles away from each other. The Court hence stated that the cases were filed in retalliation of bonafide civil case filed by Pankaj Trivedi for opening of a temple which was closed down by Didi to harass Pankaj Trivedi. The temple at Bhav-Nirjar, Ahmedabad had come in existence with the help of Pankaj Trivedi. The Judgement is documentary evidence and can be varified from The High Court at Ahmedabad.
Those who were assaulted and their bones broken are Vinod Shah, Shankar Thakkar of Mumbai, Vinoo Sanchania of London while he was in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India. One Satish Rughani of Rajkot was assaulted in his house. He just came out after bath and his towel was thrown and he was naked. His wife was locked up in other room. Satish Rughani had accompanied Dada for receiving Megsasay Award.
Some of the old Swadhyayees were arrested like core criminals by police from other states and brutally beaten on the way to the state of police and in lock-up too against the legal provisions not to use 3rd degree for confession.
On court dates or while the arrested were presented before The Magistrate, thousands of Swadhyayees from villages were summoned to the court who tried to kill some of the arrested old Swadhyayees. Usually, police had to resort to cane charging to disperse the mob and protect the arresteds lives.
All these facts are documented by newspapers. Cases were filed against number of newspapers by Swadhyayees for reporting such un-becoming attitude of Swadhyayees against old Swadhyayees. The Press Council of India decided in favour of newspapers. In English, a magazine "India Today" had published an article highlighting wrongs of Swadhyay.
Pankaj Trivedi was killed on 15th June, 2006 outside Ellisbridge Gymkhana, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. The police arrested eight to ten senior Swadhyayees. One of them was Ghanshyam Chudasama, P.A. to Dy. Comm. of Police under whose jurisdiction Pankaj Trivedi was killed. Ghanshyam Chudasama was working with some other office and using some influence, he had got himself transferred to Dy. Comm. of Police. As confessed by him, the plot to kill Pankaj Trivedi took place in The High Court premises when the order in favour of Pankaj Trivedi was passed.
Pankaj Trivedi was a green card holder and shuttling between U.S.A. and India. He went to U.S.A. just about 3 months before his life was taken away. He was harassed at U.S. air-port. When he came out of air-port, 4 white-skin people in uniform accosted him and warned of not to speak a word about Swadhyay wrongs while he was to stay in U.S.A.
Next day, Home Security Agency raided Pankaj Trivedi's house in U.S. A. as some one has printed some writing in Urdu with his photo along with photo of Bin Laden and this writing was passed to U.S.A. police stating that Pankaj Trivedi was a Bin Laden associate and threat to President Bush. Home Security Agencied investigated this matter and found Pankaj Trivedi was innocent. These facts can be varified from Home Security Agency, U.S.A.

References section doubled
I just made an edit to the MyFreeImplants page, and when I did so all of the references/footnotes ended up repeating. What's strange is that in the article itself it doesn't start at the number 1, instead it starts at number 5. I'm not sure what caused this since I didn't make any edits related to that section or the reference points either. Jahgok 04:18, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Comment Ah, just answered my own question. I noticed above someone had the same problem. I appended the URL of the article with ?action=purge and loaded the page, and it seems to have fixed it. Thanks! And sorry for the duplicate help topic. Jahgok 04:21, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Minimum age
Is there a minimum age to become an administrator on Wikipedia? If so, what is it? 'FLaRN' (talk) 05:25, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- No, there is not. There has been some discussion as of late at WT:RFA regarding young people becoming administrators. Cheers, Tangotango 05:29, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- I recommend not revealing your age if underage. There was an incident involving an underage administrator pursued by someone twice her age. Anomo 05:56, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- That site's pictures are usually unrelated decorations. The story is true and I know who both people were. There really isn't a better link to it that I could find. Even though that link dramatizes it a bit, it kept all partys's identities secret and tries to be truthful. Anomo 07:18, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- OK, I take your word for the story being true. After describing the event, the site launched into such vicious propaganda against Wikipedia (possibly even the entire idea of anonymous/pseudonymous Internet communities) that I wondered if it had only been created to voice that propaganda. But I trust your word as a fellow Wikipedia editor that the original story is true. But where is that sign "Unattended children will be sold as slaves" located? JIP | Talk 09:12, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- As a decent rule, keep as many personal details out of the Wikipedia as possible. It's not like they affect editing anyways. I just have a few minor personal interests in the form of links on my userpage, for instance. If you're a minor, this is more important. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 06:28, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Dedicated work to the project and a nice personality (keeping your cool during disputes) are generally considered more important to admins, though some consider time spent and a certain number of edits as minimum criteria. Concerning internet safety, you should probably read this. - Mgm|(talk) 07:35, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
See alsos and wiki linking
If something is mentioned in an article and linked to, should it also be a see also, or not a see also? Or does it depend? I searched all the help pages and what is the standard? I heard from some people that say see alsos should be avoided? Should they always be avoided?
Also if an article is really long (let's forget about splitting the article up to make the question and answers simpler) and a subject is brought up and wiki linked to and then pages later that subject comes up again, should it be wikilinked to again for convenience or strictly never wikilinked to because it was once wikilinked before? Anomo 05:51, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Regarding the first part, personally I feel that the see also section is mostly redundant. Its purpose is solved not only by wikilinks but also by categories. So articles with a similar background would mostly be categorised together.
- For the second part, as a general rule, over linking is avoided. If an item is linked once, then there should be no need to link it again. For a very long article, splitting should be a good option else the article becomes unreadable -- Lost(talk) 06:49, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- I don't share Lost's view entirely. See also links can be more closely related to the article without the need to wade through an entire category of links, but generally, you should try to avoid including articles that have already been linked in such a section. - Mgm|(talk) 07:30, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think the See Also section is actually quite useful in ways. It's quite possible that there are articles related to the article you're currently reading that don't share categories (or do share categories, but the categories contain hundreds of articles and these two happen to have a much closer link). While it's likely that the other article may be linked somewhere in the text of the current article, so are a lot of other things that aren't as closely related, so it's good to have just a separate section to point out the most important ones. I wouldn't say it's necessary, but I do think it's handy. Confusing Manifestation 13:58, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
The above views are more of my personal views. Though I tried looking for some guidelines to put here, I was unable to. Would request the others to post a link to the guidelines if they know of any. Anomo, in the absence of guidelines, I'd suggest to follow your own judgement. I am just posting this so that my views above are not construed as a guideline -- Lost(talk) 14:20, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Is there a way to get a straw poll or something like that to get many many people's opinions so there can be some more firmly set guidelines? Anomo 15:41, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Okay I started one. It's still developing choices: Wikipedia:See_alsos Anomo 06:12, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

- First thing to do is get an account. Second, see Wikipedia:Uploading images and Wikipedia:Image use policy. Finally, linking to an article is shown here -- Lost(talk) 08:13, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- We can't allow just any image because we have to abide by copyright law. You can only upload the picture if you made it yourself, or if you know who did and can get permission or make a suitable fair use claim. - Mgm|(talk) 08:33, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Adding information to the link
Both cartoonists, Edward Koren and David Sipress were notable graduates of the Horace Mann High School (in Riverdale, NY) I believe they should be added to the list of notable graduates. Their cartoons are frquently seen in The New Yorker.
- See Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools. They have a guideline on adding notable alumni to the school article -- Lost(talk) 10:17, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'd be happy to add them to such a list if you have reliable sources to prove they are indeed graduates of that High School. - Mgm|(talk) 10:19, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Moving a page
The Article entitled 'National Front for the Liberation of Vietnam' should be called 'The National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam'. I was going to try to move it, but I see in the move history it has already been moved; but the title is still without the word 'South' in it. What is going on and how do I fix it? Cripipper 11:46, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Got it fixed! Someone had reverted a previous move, but for the some reason the rv didn't appear in the move log. Cripipper 11:54, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

About copyright
hi, I'm New user and I'd like to know how to upload image without the problems of copyright. I uploaded this image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mesbahyazdi.jpg
And there is no copyright with it, it's free of copyright. What shall I do?
Thanks
--Mohawer 13:13, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Actually if you just click on the link that you gave, there is a message that tells you what to do if you created the image and if you didnt. Just follow those instructions. Its that simple. But please do it quickly else the image will be speedy deleted -- Lost(talk) 13:17, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Just to emphasise, it can only be free of copyright if it has been placed in the public domain. Did you take the photograph? Notinasnaid 13:55, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Any picture is copyrighted to the person who originally took it unless specifically stated otherwise. - Mgm|(talk) 20:55, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Inserting picture into article
I do not appear to be able to insert any pictures into my articles. I have followed your advice on uploading but they dont actually give you instructions on how to do it. only descriptions on tags etc. How is the easy way to insert a picture into an article.
thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seansweeney1 (talk • contribs)
- If the image is already uploaded, then simply go to the article in the edit mode.
- A plain picture with no formatting can be inserted with the statement:

- If you want to add some formatting, then the detailed tutorial is at Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. Please be sure of adding the copyright status and the appropriate tag, else the image will be deleted -- Lost(talk) 15:13, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Philippines National Dance Carinosa
You listed Carinosa as the Philippines' national dance and it was formerly Tinikling. My question is when did the change occur? or what year was the national dance changed from Tinikling to Carinosa and if there is a reason behind this change, please tell me. We are promoting the Philippine culture and Tinikling is always being promoted as the Philippines national dance; now this was changed, I wanted to know the reason and when it was changed. Thanks so much.

Garbled Texas
I checked the FAQs and I couldn't find an answer.
I'm using Safari 2.0.4 web browser.
I get all sorts of garbled text. For example, from www.wikipedia.org, what I see under "English" is this
Vjg"Htff"Gpe{engrgfkc
Most text isn't garbled, but some is. I'm wondering if I possibly don't have a necessary font installed in my system.
What do I need to do the correct this?

Featured Articles Redirect
I wanted to read about the requirements for featured articles so I popped 'featured article' into the search box and hit enter, thinking that some kind pioneer before me would have made a redirect to the appropriate page. They hadn't. Most likey, those pioneers found what they were looking for eventually and didn't bother to go back and fix up a redirect. No matter; I'm a kind, selfless, altruistic kinda guy, so I put one up myself. Then, in my usual thoughtful fashion, I considered what might happen in some poor soul in the future, were to type in 'featured articles' - they could face the horrors of a non-existant page, like so many have before them. So I wrenched that into my search box and was sickened to discover that it had been deleted and blocked from regeneration - taking a quick look in the deletion log I was taken aback as a twisted plot of treachery and deceit unfolded from the past, its fetid stench saturating the atmosphere so that I could barely breathe. What could motivate not one, but two deletions of a thoroughly useful redirect as 'featured articles > wikipedia:featured article'? --Username132 (talk) 17:22, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- That it is a cross-namespace redirect, which is a current bone of contention in deletion policy. You can always ask for it to be undeleted at Deletion review. Titoxd(?!?) 17:23, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hitting enter, will try to look for an ARTICLE with that title. If you want to search Wikipedia for featured articles, you should hit the Search button and if memory serves me correctly this automatically searches the Wikipedia namespace. - Mgm|(talk) 20:53, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Image permission question
I've just uploaded two pictures from the Succubus website (http://www.bloodceremony.net/Home/leffat/Succubus/body_succubus.html). The copyright holder of these images explicitly gave me permission to use them freely in Wikipedia, so I chose the license "The copyright holder gave me permission to use this work in Wikipedia (no other terms specified)". But it turns out Wikipedia classifies these images as candidates for speedy deletion, because they're not explicitly free to use outside Wikipedia. What should I do? Do I have to ask the copyright holder if the images can be used by everyone as they please? He did indicate that these are official promotion images and can be used publically, which is different from snapshots taken from the film DVD itself. JIP | Talk 18:07, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, in effect. Images in Wikipedia must be free to be used elsewhere, including for commercial purposes. There is a specific license that can be applied, but it cannot limit use, only require credit. This does not suit every copyright holder, certainly. Notinasnaid 19:24, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- The easiest way is to ask them to mention this permission on his website, so we can easily verify, or he could email permissions[at]wikimedia[dot]org. Also, even if they're promotional images, make sure the website owner actually owns the rights to the images, otherwise you should tag using promophoto or however that template was suppoosed to be named. - Mgm|(talk) 20:50, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- The website owner owns the copyright as he is also the film director. I asked him about this, giving him a link to the Wikipedia image use policy, and he replied: "Let's not give copyright away completely. The images may only be used in connection to the film." Does this mean the images can be used, or does it not? JIP | Talk 05:11, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
Certified Financial Planner page
I am a Trademark Paralegal at Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. I came across the Wikipedia page for "Certified Financial Planner", which is a trademark owned by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. I edited the content of the page so that it displays our trademarks appropriately, but I also need to edit the title of the page. Because it is a trademark, the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER(tm) mark must be displayed as shown here, i.e. in all capital letters and followed by the (tm) trademark indication or superscript symbol if possible. Additionally, for further protection of our mark, we ask that it always be followed by a noun. In this case we would like the title of the page to be "CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER(tm) certification".
Thank you for your help.
Erika Hellgren Trademark Paralegal, CFP Board
- Sorry, I do not think the Wikipedia naming conventions allow that. Article titles should follow general English typography as closely as possible. And even nonwithstanding the conventions, having the (tm) as a superscript symbol is technically impossible. JIP | Talk 18:26, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Many Wikipedia articles have titles which are trademarks: Coca-Cola, for instance. They do not use "TM" or "R-in-a-circle" characters in their titles (although these characters are in fact in the Unicode character set and thus are capable of being used). Neither do newspapers routinely add such symbols to their headlines when they happen to mention a trademarked thing. Such usages are clearly within nominative fair use, and there is no legal requirement to humor the trademark lawyers with symbols in such cases, nor is such usage standard in English-language articles that are not marketing brochures. *Dan T.* 19:17, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- As noted, this is an academic and reference work, and the gratuitous and unsightly use of trademark notices is deprecated. FCYTravis 19:43, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Please see Wikipedia:Manual of Style (trademarks). -- Rick Block (talk) 01:49, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
Multiple names/titles linking to same page/article
I am preparing to create a page/article about the non-profit organization for which I work. Is there a way to link various versions of our name to our page when people search for us?
We are officially the National Foundation for Advancment in the Arts but are often incorrectly referred to as the National Foundation for THE Advancement OF the Arts. We produce the Arts Recognition and Talent Search program which is also known as the ARTS program. Our organization's acronym is NFAA. People might search for us as National Foundation ... in either the correct or the incorrect way. They might seach for us as the Arts Recogntion ... and they might search for us as NFAA (which is currently linking to a rock band) or as NFAA ARTS.
What should I do to ensure that however someone searches for us, they find our page?
Thanks for your assistance

- You'll want to take a look at Wikipedia:Redirects - any time there is a spelling, capitalisation, or alternate term it is acceptable to redirect to the appropriate page to aid in the ease of searching. You may also want to look at Wikipedia:Disambiguation for the specific case of NFAA, if it is indeed a rock band. You have several options - one is creating NFAA (disambiguation and making that the default when NFAA is searched, or the other is to append a disambiguation notice on the rock band's article. More on that in the disambig page, though, so I won't go into it unless you need more help. Anyway, I would suggest making the main article National Foundation for Advancment in the Arts and creating redirects for the others. Let me know if you need more help, but I think those two articles should help you.

Citations
Lately I have been adding sections to articles, with the new sections (often a "history" section) based on only one or two sources. What is the best way to note that the entire section is based on source X? Should I place the citation at the end of the section? I am afraid that would look as if only the last sentence or paragraph was based on the source. (I usually use cite.php.) For an example, see the "History" section of Denver Zoo. --Ginkgo100 talk · e@ 20:15, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- I put a source at the end if it refers to an entire section, but I would like to hear what others think...- Mgm|(talk) 20:42, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Adding sources just at the end of the section is confusing for the reason you suggest, and especially if someone else inserts a sentence half way down with a different source, or with so source at all. I prefer to cite each fact I include, even if it means some repetition. I don't think there's any standard - just do what seems best to you.--Cherry blossom tree 21:15, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- If there's just one or two sources, adding a footnote to each paragraph is often sufficient and neatest. Unless you use too many paragraphs, it shouldn't look too repetitious. Obviously, if one paragraph takes elements from both sources, you can add a footnote at each relevant point in the paragraph.
- Bear in mind that if the source is a book, it should usually cite the page number(s) or chapter(s), not just the book as a whole. That means that even though you may have a long section, it will probably be verified by different parts of the book, so each different fact or paragraph should have a different footnote for the different page/chapter(s) that verify it. --Sam Blanning(talk) 23:58, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Aligning text to the right?
Is this possible in Wikipedia? If so, why is the knowledge hidden from public view? I'm trying to get a header to align right. I've tried a number of different methods, to no avail :( Bill Oaf 21:26, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- You want the page title to align to the right? Well, the only way to do this is to edit the global css file which only admins can edit.
- But if you just want a normal heading to, just wrap <div align="right"> </div> or <div style="text-align: right;"> around it. GeorgeMoney (talk) 21:32, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Redirecting
I recently made a new article about virtual records. I was wondering if there was anyway to redirect searches or links reading "virtual albums" to the page i recently created? The two terms are one in the same, and currently there is no article for "virtual album", i wanted to make it easier for searchers to find the page they are looking for.
- See Wikipedia:Redirect. Basically you make a page called virtual album with #REDIRECT virtual record as its content. --Cherry blossom tree 21:50, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Where do I get fonts?
Where do I find out how to download fonts for other Wikipedia languages? wellsoberlin 21:36, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Huh? Fonts? Most Wikipedia use standard web fonts (mostly Arial, I think) which are found on virtually every computer. You don't need extra fonts to view them. — QuantumEleven 15:54, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
- I imagine this is with respect to special characters, especially to those of languages that do not use the Latin alphabet, and most probably to East Asian languages; it is the latter about which most display problems arise. Wikipedia:Enabling East Asian characters provides a few links at which one might find the files the installation of which should render Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters other than as mojibake. Wikipedia:Technical FAQ appears to offer other information as to Unicode support relative to one's web browser or operating system, but I'm not sufficiently conversant with any of this to be able to offer specific guidance. If the links I've given aren't helpful, WP:VP/T is probably the page to which you should turn. Joe 21:53, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Editing the "top bit" of an entry in Wikipedia!
The <Edit> links on pages take the reader to the section below the link. The first <Edit> link is BELOW the "summary" paragraphs and contents box that begin the entry. How can these poarts of a page be edited.
Speciafically I would like to add a comment to the Portable Document Format page summary. The page is at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_document_format#PDF_and_accessibility
The "header" contains the words "This feature ensures that a valid PDF will render exactly the same regardless of its origin or destination (but depending on font availability).". However this sentence contradicts the sentence under "Technology" which reads: "PDF is primarily the combination of three technologies: . . . a font-embedding/replacement system to allow fonts to travel with the documents,".
I believe the latter sentence is correct and the former misguided. However I can find no way to edit (add a qualifier to point out the contradiction if nothing else) the section at the TOP of the page, only to those sections below.
Is the first part sacrosanct and if so how can errors be corrected there?
. . . is there anyone out there? What was the point of writing all this? It's simple going to become another page in this vast Gormenghast labyrinth of pages, gathering dust. If you too are lost here . . . hi! God's speed on your journey.
- Ahh, it's a bit of a drag, but you'll need to edit the whole page at once, to get at the introductory paragraph -- there should be an "edit this page" tab up at the top of your window (unless the page is protected from editing). Does that help? :) Luna Santin 09:11, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
- Here's a trick if you want to edit the lead section of the page. Go to one of the sections and press edit. If you pressed it for 1st section, then 1 will be the last number you see at the end of the url. Replace this 1 with 0 and hit enter. You will now be editing only the lead section and reducing chances of edit conflict. -- Lost(talk) 09:18, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Needs Better Discussion Facilities
Is there a group I can join to keep up-to-date with regards to the debate on changing discussion pages to become more like a message board? Hello,

Thank you
- Just ignore the warning about it already existing and it will update it. If you make a mistake and wanto to revert yourself, just go down to the section that says "File History" which is on the image description page. You should see

(note, even though the "del" link is there, only admins can use it.)
Just click the "rev" link to revert back to the original version. So even if you do mess it up you can always revert, so there is nothing to worry. Just ignore the warning. GeorgeMoney (talk) 01:57, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Unable to Move/Rename page
An article was created today for "California Bluegrass association". There was a typo in the title...the word "association" should be capitalized, as it is part of a proper name (it is used correctly elsewhere in the article. I created an account to move the page. When I try, I get a message that I am not logged in, or that my account is too new. While I can list the page for an administrator to move, this seems like a trivial typo matter. How long does it take for my account to no longer be "too new"? Should I just list the page for an admin to change?

An idiots guide for uploading images...
Quite frankly, my eyeballs melt when I start reading about all the different types of copyright available here. And then uploading to the Wikicommons to link over to Wikipedia? Huh?? Wha?? I have written permission from a photographer to post images of actors that he photographed (at public events) for his blog. He wants to be credited by name for the photos, but does not care about reserving any rights to the photos. - If he has released rights with credit you can upload them to commons (although you will need proof of the permission) under GFDL or similar. I've made a mistake, can you delete an image?
A few minutes ago I uploaded this image: to replace this one: as it was missing a few countries. I typed in the name of the old image as the source file name (as I wanted to replace it, not make two images), but I did that before I chose the file I wanted (by clicking on the 'Browse' button on the upload page), so when I chose my file, the source file name changed automatically, overriding what I had just put in. There's now two images, but this one: is the one that's correct. I've replaced all uses of the old image with the new one, so could someone (an admin, maybe?) delete the old image, or should I just add the 'redundant' template to it? Thanks! - Lewis R « т · c » 20:02, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think that's a good idea. The image you were trying to overwrite is on the Wikipedia Commons. I recommend you reinstate the links you altered and try to overwrite the image there. It would be a shame to have a free image like yours not be on the commons anyway. I'll see if I can do this for you. - Mgm|(talk) 20:32, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
Service mark as subject of Wikipedia entry
