Speedy renaming and speedy merging
Categories may be listed here if they fall under the criteria specified below. Deletion and de-listing may occur after 48 hours if there are no objections. They must be tagged with {{subst:cfr-speedy|new name}} so that users of the categories are aware of the proposal. This delay is to allow for objections over correct spelling, etc. to be made and to ensure that items are not processed that do not meet the criteria.
Categories that qualify for speedy deletion (per Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, e.g. "patent nonsense", "recreation", categories that have been empty for four days) can be tagged with the regular speedy tags, such as {{db|reason}}, and no delay is required for these.
Contested requests can be removed from this list after 48 hours. If the nominator wants to continue the process they need to submit the request as a regular CfD using the instructions above.
Speedy criteria
Criteria for speedy deletion, renaming, or merging are strictly limited to: From 20 November 2009 to 4 December 2013 the policy page Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion transcluded the criteria for deletion of categories from a discussion page instead of having them directly coded in the policy page. To see the history of that section of the speedy deletion policy during that period, see the editing history of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy/Criteria. For current discussion page for the same material see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy#Speedy criteria.
- A nomination to merge or rename, brought forward as a full CfD, may be speedily closed if the closing administrator is satisfied that:
- The nomination clearly falls within the scope of one of the criteria listed above, and;
- No objections have been made within 48 hours of the initial nomination.
- If both these conditions are satisfied, the closure will be regarded as having been as a result of a speedy nomination. If any objections have been raised then the CfD nomination will remain in place for the usual 7-day discussion period, to be decided in accordance with expressed consensus.
Add requests for speedy renaming here
If the category and desired change do not match one of the criteria in C2 listed above, do not list it here. Instead, list it in the main CFD section.
If you are in any doubt as to whether it qualifies, do not list it here.
Use the following format:
- * [[:Category:OLD name]] to [[:Category:NEW name]] – Reason for rename. ~~~~
Don't forget to tag the category with {{subst:Cfr-speedy|newname}}
Please add new entries at the top of the list and sign and date stamp your entries with ~~~~.
A request may be completed if it is more than 48 hours old; that is, the time stamp shown is 01:42, 7 June 2024 (UTC) or earlier.

- Category:Portuguese maritime history to Category:Maritime history of Portugal – C2C convention of Category:Maritime history by country. Tim! (talk) 07:29, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- * Oppose. The category is not about the martime history of Portugal. It is about maritime history generally, where Portuguese happened to be involved, that is the maritime history of India, Africa, Brazil, etc. If this is inconsistent with the criteria, then I'd rather rename the category to something else, but definitely not "of Portugal". Walrasiad (talk) 09:20, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- Then you should nominate the rest of Category:Maritime history by country for discussion at CfD. This is a clear C2C change.--Mike Selinker (talk) 13:18, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- When I created this category, and titled it, it was with the specific intent and purpose to avoid "of Portugal". If the title sounds too close to all those "of X" categories to merit C2C, then I would rather rename this category to something altogether different and avoid it being subsumed there. If recommending a CfD to change all those categories is necessary, then I kindly request this move to be suspended until then. Walrasiad (talk) 17:31, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- This should go to CfD but I still want to point out that "maritime history where the Portuguese happened to be involved" is not a sound subject for a category. It's much too vague and prone to subjective interpretation of what "Portuguese happened to be involved" means. What's an example of an article that belongs to Category:Portuguese maritime history but not to Category:Maritime history of Portugal anyways? Pichpich (talk) 19:58, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- Cape Bojador and Cape Correntes, for instance. They are not in Portugal, but in Morocco/Western Sahara and Mozambique respectively, and yet they are of significant general maritime interest that just happened to be doubled by Portuguese sailors. Similarly for new ships (carrack, caravel) or new rules of navigation (e.g. astronomical tables, volta do mar, regiment of the leagues) which happened to be pioneered by Portuguese, but are a general maritime topic applied and used elsewhere. "of Portugal" makes it sound too nationally possessive or exclusive. Vagueness is precisely its appeal - elements of maritime history which cannnot be narrowly classified as "belonging" to a country, but in which it was involved nonetheless. Generally speaking, I don't think "Maritime History of X" to be a good approach to maritime history since which tends to happen not in that country but elsewhere. "of Portugal" insinuates that the maritime history happened in or around Portugal. Whereas "Portuguese maritime history" allows for it to be maritime history that happened elsewhere but happened to involve Portuguese. So articles about Portuguese maritime adventures in Africa, Arabia, India, Brazil, etc. are not "of Portugal" but more properly "of Arabia", "of Africa", "of India" or "of Brazil". Maybe in my mind, "Portuguese maritime history" means more "contributions to maritime history by Portuguese" or "portion of maritime history that involved Portuguese", rather than the maritime history of a country (since it involves more than that country). I dread to imagine how these categories plan to handle the maritime history of countries which no longer exist? e.g. Venice, Genoa, Pisa, etc. Is that "of Italy" or "of Venice"? "Italian maritime history" leaves that more flexible. Is James Lancaster "of England" or "of Britain" or "of India" or "of Indonesia"?, etc. Walrasiad (talk) 20:40, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- Grammatically speaking, "FOO of Portugal" is really just another way of saying "Portuguese FOO". I don't think it's that big of a deal one way or the other, but this should match the format of the other categories in the same tree. Good Ol’factory (talk) 21:22, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

- Not at all the same. One is the name of a modern country, with precise geographical location, the other is a nationality, which can range anywhere geographically. And maritime matters are precisely about roaming elswhere. That said, since I've only placed links from the 15th-16th C. age of discovery & exploration in this category, I'd prefer to rename this category to something more precise and remove it from the "Maritime History of Country", category, so you can maintain tree consistency there. But this is definitely not "maritime history of Portugal". I'd be forced to remove links from the category which do not pertain to Portugal, geographically or politically. And they are very nicely collected together now. Please don't do this. Walrasiad (talk) 22:29, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
- I disagree. "Of Portugal" doesn't necessarily mean that it has to involve only things within the sovereign territory of Portugal. "Military actions of the United States" is not limited to military actions by the United States that occurred in United States territory. Similarly, "Maritime history of Portugal" involves maritime history of Portugal and Portuguese people, not necessarily limited to Portuguese territory. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:06, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
- Good Ol'factory put it much better than I could, but I agree completely - "maritime history of Portugal" = "Portugese maritime history", and the latter is a noncomforming name that must be renamed. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:13, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

- Military action necessarily involves State power. So does naval. So they can be said to be "of X", since it involves the government of X, which is well-defined. But maritime history isn't state-related. It is sea-related. Maritime history of X can and often does imply geographical location. It will introduce more complications of trying to sort whether, say, events on the Coromandel coast belongs to the maritime history of India or the maritime history of Portugal. Or whether important geographic headlands in other countries, or generic nautical techniques, ship design, cartographic innovations, or something by an expatriate Spanish cartographer or Italian captain, etc. which happened to be relevant to Portuguese maritime history but are not "of Portugal". Sorting and removing what is or is not "of Portugal", will decimate this category for no good reason. I understand your desire for consistency, but many of these articles don't fit in a category "of Portugal". As the creator of this category and a primary contributor to most of the articles on Portuguese maritime history on Wikipedia, I know the usefulness of keeping these articles together. If the category title "Portuguese maritime history" is too confusing or inconsistent with your "of X" criteria, then I'd rather rename this category altogether in a more precise way that accurately reflecs what I've been trying to collect together in this one, with a title that disambiguates more clearly, and remove it from the "Maritime history by country" category to avoid confusion. (Although to be frank, I'd much prefer this "maritime history by country" to be rethought and allowed flexibility. It is like creating a category "Explorers by country" and forcing "Italian explorers" to become "explorers of Italy". It introduces a very different meaning and becomes very confusing.) Walrasiad (talk) 01:07, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think it's as big a problem as you seem to suggest, but it sounds like you should nominate the other categories for renaming if you think they should be changed. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:13, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

- There is not only one place in the world called "Darwin". In addition to the city in Australia, there is Darwin, California, Darwin, Minnesota, Darwin, Ohio, Darwin, Falkland Islands, and Darwin, Río Negro. The one in Australia may be the largest among these, but I don't think that means we need to depart from the standard set by the name of the article and the parent category. It seems to me like a straightforward application of C2B. Good Ol’factory(talk) 03:49, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- Darwin, Australia may be the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC when it comes to cities, but given that the parent cat is Category:Darwin, Northern Territory, the renaming here falls under C2C, too. - The Bushranger One ping only 04:21, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- Sure other location also named "Darwin" exist but they are not primary and very little known. The only reason that the Darwin page is a disambiguation page is due to the fact that people wanted Darwin to point to Charles Darwin as oppose to the true primary topic. Again the use of ", Northern Territory" is pointless. Bidgee (talk) 12:09, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
- Not really "pointless". If one sees that the article is at Darwin, Northern Territory and that the category is at Category:Darwin, Northern Territory, it's actually very helpful to know that the subcategories will also use the format "Darwin, Northern Territory". If there's no rule of thumb that says they will be formatted the same, you have to guess, basically. Something like Category:History of Darwin would have to be changed, because it could easily mean "history of Charles Darwin". But then we don't change Category:Roads in Darwin, even though there are roads in other places called Darwin? Too confusing, IMO—just make them all the same format. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:48, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

- Oppose: Only one Darwin (as a location) exisits, Darwin, Northern Territory named as such since there are other notable Darwins (e.g. Charles Darwin). Using , Northern Territory to for an example, Category:Media in Darwin, Northern Territory is redundant and not needed. Bidgee (talk) 00:07, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

- You don't need to shout. Just because you have made a polite request doesn't mean the other party will oblige you. I think I've already attempted to explain that to you and where our opinions differ on these matters. I looked atyour old proposal to move the article. It looks to me like it was opposed on the merits by everyone who commented—as far as I can see, it was nothing to do with "politics". The users recognized that "Logical syntax" is ambiguous and can have a different meaning than Syntax (logic). Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:06, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- Comment – The existing name
isseems to be linguistically incorrect andmustshould change to the noun "logic" (as in syntax that relates to logic) from the adjective "logical" (as in the syntax is logical). Whether the change be to Logic syntax or Syntax of logic, I have no suggestion. But the suggested Syntax (logic) seems wrong somehow; a title without the ambiguator should make sense on its own within the field, but this would mean "syntax as it occurs in the field of logic", which is not the same as "syntax of logic expressions", and I think the latter is intended. Maybe Logic expression syntax? —Quondum☏✎ 15:43, 15 February 2012 (UTC)- I toned down my emphatic tone; language isn't that rigid. Yet keep in mind that using the adjective form sounds "wrong" to a number of people. — Quondum☏✎ 05:17, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

- Category:Logical symbols to Category:Logic symbols – per List of logic symbols ("logical symbols" is ambiguous)Good Ol’factory (talk) 08:57, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose - I do understand how it is possible to say that this is ambiguous. I.e. that "logical symbol" could mean something like a "symbol that makes sense", or whatever. I just don't think there is any chance in the world that anyone is going to make that mistake, and if it did happen once in a million Wikipedia years, that wouldn't make this move necessary. I think there is an extreme over-sensitivity to ambiguity and think these proposals should originate at WP:PHILO or WP:MATH to see how we want to handle things. Interestingly, who would you go to as an expert in what is and is not ambiguous? A logician. Greg Bard(talk) 04:31, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- So, essentially you oppose because the proposal wasn't made by a logician? Otherwise, what is the opposition based on? You've acknowledged that the current form is more ambiguous and I pointed out that the rename would bring consistency between the name used in article space and category space. So why not do it? Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:09, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
- Support – On purely linguistic grounds, "logical symbols"
isseems to me to be simply incorrect (not ambiguous). We use a noun qualifier to suggest "relates to", not an adjective. A "logical symbol" is a symbol that adheres to some rules of logic; a "logic symbol" is a symbol that relates to logic. We speak of speed bumps, not speedy bumps. —Quondum☏✎ 15:43, 15 February 2012 (UTC) - Oppose - compare "mathematical symbols" versus "mathematics symbols". In any case this does not fall under C2D, because the category would not ever start with "list of". — Carl (CBM · talk) 18:47, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

- Category:Disambiguation to Category:Wikipedia:Disambiguation – C2D per Wikipedia:Disambiguation Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:23, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- The only example provided in the criterion is for the main namespace, not the Cat one, and it appears there is no precedent for the claim that C2D ever mandates titles to begin "Category:Wikipedia:...", as the nominator apparently concludes from the language
- Renaming a category to match its eponymous article (e.g. Category:The Beatles and The Beatles – the category could be renamed under this criterion if the article is moved).
- If there were precedents, something other than the following facts would surely obtain:
- There are 56 Cats "in use" with titles starting "Wikipedia:". Of them, 51 are just red-links to notional Cats (with 1 or 2 members each), and 5 each have a page in the Cat namespace. Of those five, none has more than 20 members; 3 apparently have to do with GLAM (industry sector), and they collectively have 36 memberships (presumably some being pages that are members of more than one of the 3); at a glance, it seems likely that 3 of the 36 are templates that assign users to the respective Cats, and the rest are in the User namespace.
The remaining two non-redlinked Cats have 18 and 3 members respectively. (I am fascinated by -- but uncomprehending of -- the 18-member one, Category:Wikipedia:Authority control (key words only); it has only main-namespace pages as members and each concerns a topic "native" to some non-English language. (About two thirds of the topics pertain to German. The lead of one,Schlagwortnormdatei, translates its own title as "Keyword Authority Control", hinting at the need for k.a.c. of names for bodies exercising k.a.c.... I'm going to resist the fascination.)

- I doubt there is any problem that the proposed move would ameliorate, especially as it appears this Cat's title has been stable at least since 2004, when the second edit to the page coveniently mentioned the current title. IMO, any perception that a problem now exists has to overcome a strong presumption to the contrary -- far from cases where speedy is suitable.
--Jerzy•t 07:35, 14 February 2012 (UTC) - I disagree with this one as well. Sometimes the article name is of a form that doesn't suit itself to a category name, and I think this is one of those times.--Mike Selinker (talk) 20:25, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

- Disagree. Triangulation (geometry) needs a disambiguator because of all the other unrelated articles listed in Triangulation (disambiguation). But Category:Triangulation does not, because there is no other triangulation category to disambiguate it from. - So I think you should nominate the article for renaming. As long as the article stays where it is, the category name should follow. Advancing a broad "anti-parenthetical disambiguator" approach doesn't seem to me to be a sufficient reason to oppose a specific category rename when it meets the criteria.
