Temporary full protection for 48 hours or so. Darkfrog24 keeps making undiscussed changes that introduce errors, and editwarring to remove a word the editor doesn't like and has tendentiously been on the warpath about since at least May 2009. There is an ongoing discussion at WT:MOS about whether that particular change should be made, in which the editor has not achieved consensus for this change (it's a change against logical quotation, the quotation punctuation system WP has had since the first version of MOS in August 2002, a subject of perennial debate (in recent years, usually temporally WP:OTHERPARENT-shopped by Darkfrog24) in which the sides, the arguments, the sourced facts, and the consensus never change, but which Darkfrog24 pursues relentlessly, year after year, in a WP:IDHT pattern). The present issue is both temporary(?) conventional editwarring (DF has made this anti-consensus change, to remove "logical", three times in one day , and will not take "get consensus first" for an answer), and part of a pattern of very long-term slow editwarring against logical quotation. This new spate closely mirrors, and looks like the beginning of a new version of, the same editor's 5-year pattern at WT:MOSFAQ: |

* to get rid of or sow confusion about the terms "logical quotation" and "typesetters' quotation", either by hiding them entirely or by editwarring in "British style" and "American style", respectively, to confuse the distinctions and to support the editor's 6-year campaign to undo logical quotation on WP as somehow "anti-American" (despite the fact that British and logical quotation styles have been conclusively proven to be different and that many American publishers use logical quotation, demonstrated repeatedly in years of re-discussion of this issue): |

Revision as of 10:22, 2 September 2015
Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here. | |
---|---|
Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection) After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism. Temporary semi-protection: Most edits to this page for the past six months have been genre warring. A single user, who appears to hop between IP's and various new accounts, keeps adding the same undiscussed, unsourced genres into the article, which are then reverted. Examples 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Current requests for reduction in protection level
Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.
- To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
- Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
- Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
- If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add Edit fully-protected to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.
Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.
Planned Parenthood 2015 undercover videos controversy
- Planned Parenthood 2015 undercover videos controversy (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Semi-protection: Offending editors (and there were only a couple) were never warned or blocked before the page was locked. This page was prematurely locked. Please lower protection to semi/1RR. Chaos can be easily handled with selective warnings/blocks. Wikipedia is supposed to be the encyclopedia "that anybody can edit." Thank you. Checkingfax (talk) 04:24, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- I can't see where you asked Doc James about this before coming here. And there is no real need to warn anybody before protection. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 06:46, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks User:CambridgeBayWeather for the notification. The comment that there is no group editing of this article is justification for the protection. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 06:55, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- CambridgeBayWeather, Other Admins that monitor this page would disagree with you. Their philosphy is escalation from: do nothing > warning > block > ban > lock, always striving for the lowest barrier to editing.
- Here is where I made the block deescalation request to Doc James: Talk:Planned Parenthood 2015 undercover videos controversy#Please lower page protection and warn.2Fblock warring editors. Checkingfax (talk) 07:29, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- And that is fine there is no hard and fast rule here. I believe that locking a page when people are arguing over something is much better than blocking. If blocked they can't put forward their opinion on the talk page. If they can express their views then it is possible that consensus can be reached. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 07:40, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Current requests for edits to a protected page
Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.
- Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among
Edit protected
,Edit template-protected
,Edit extended-protected
, orEdit semi-protected
to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed. - Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the
Edit COI
template should be used. - Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
- If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
- This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
Fulfilled/denied requests
A rolling archive of the last seven days of protection requests can be found at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Rolling archive.
