Revision as of 01:39, 12 March 2010
Speedy renaming and speedy merging
Categories may be listed here if they fall under the criteria specified below. Deletion and de-listing may occur after 48 hours if there are no objections. They must be tagged with {{subst:cfr-speedy|new name}} so that users of the categories are aware of the proposal. This delay is to allow for objections over correct spelling, etc. to be made and to ensure that items are not listed here that do not meet the criteria.
Categories that qualify for speedy deletion (per Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, e.g. "patent nonsense", "recreation", empty categories (that have been empty for four days) can be tagged with the regular speedy tags, such as {{db|reason}}, and no delay is required for these.
Contested requests can be removed from this list after 48 hours. If the nominator wants to continue the process they need to submit the request as a regular CfD using the instructions above.
Speedy criteria
Criteria for speedy deletion, renaming, or merging are strictly limited to:
From 20 November 2009 to 4 December 2013 the policy page Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion transcluded the criteria for deletion of categories from a discussion page instead of having them directly coded in the policy page. To see the history of that section of the speedy deletion policy during that period, see the editing history of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy/Criteria. For current discussion page for the same material see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy#Speedy criteria.
A nomination to merge or rename, brought forward as a full CfD, may be speedily closed if the closing administrator is satisfied that:
- The nomination clearly falls within one of the criteria listed above, and;
- No objections have been made within 48 hours of the initial nomination.
- If both these conditions are satisfied, the closure will be regarded as having been as a result of a speedy nomination. If any objections have been raised then the CfD nomination will remain in place for the usual 7 day discussion period, to be decided in accordance with expressed consensus.
Add requests for speedy renaming here
If the category and desired change do not match one of the criteria in C2 listed above, do not list it here. Instead, list it in the main CFD section.
If you are in any doubt as to whether it qualifies, do not list it here.
Use the following format:
- * [[:Category:OLD name]] to [[:Category:NEW name]] ~~~~
Don't forget to tag the category with {{subst:Cfr-speedy|new name}}
Please add new entries at the top of the list and sign and date stamp your entries with ~~~~.
A request may be completed if it is more than 48 hours old; that is, the time stamp shown is 14:30, 28 May 2024 (UTC) or earlier.

- Oppose. I propose renaming to Category:Americans of Dominican (Dominican Republic) descent or Category:Americans of Dominican (D. R.) descent. SamEV (talk) 00:28, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- Seriously? That is quite outside of the naming pattern for both Category:American people by ethnic or national origin and Category:People of Dominican Republic descent. Unless you are starting a broad nomination to implement your proposed change, I don't see why my proposal shouldn't be speedied, just for the sake of consistency. Good Ol’factory (talk) 06:41, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- GO, the principle of a speedy is that it is stopped by any objection, regardless of merit. I can't see any merit in the redundant names which SamEV proposes, but that's why we have a process for such cases, to determine consensus. So unless Sam EV withdraws the objection, this one will have to go to a full CFD. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 09:53, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- True—it just seems a bit silly that someone can oppose a move by proposing something completely out of the ordinary and yet not be willing to start the nomination themselves. It's OK if it goes to full, it just seems like a bit of a waste of someone's time. Good Ol’factory (talk) 10:01, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- My opposition has to do with the fact that "Dominican", not "Dominican Republic" is the correct demonym and ethnonym. I propose that either "Dominican Republic" or "D.R." be used as the disambiguators. (I assume you both know that the ambiguity is due to the existence of Dominicans from Dominica.) SamEV (talk) 20:11, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, I realise that, but what do we do with the fact that "Dominican Republic" is the demonym that WP uses in categories? This is a fairly long-standing convention. (For examples of it being accepted by consensus, see here.) If you propose to change it, it would be best if you nominated this category for a full discussion. - I'm actually convinced that "emigrants" is how these really should be named: see here. That said, I can't say that the speedy criteria would not apply here, since all the others do use "immigrants". Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:02, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose all these Gibraltarian emigrant renamings, which were discussed at CFD only a month ago: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2010_February_9#Gibraltarian_emigrants. I opposed them then, and oppose them now. If you want to rename them, please open a full CFD. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:38, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- BrownHairedGirl, May I first say that I agree entirely with you that "emigrants" rather than "immigrants" is more suitable, for reasons already expressed, to this whole group of categories. However, that said, I do not believe that this is the forum for dealing with this issue. At present, I have made a quick calculation (based upon the number of subcategories per parent category), and note that there are no fewer than 498 categories within the group. Of these, it would appear that only the six mentioned above use the word "emigrants" and even within the Gibraltarian emigrants category there is Category:Gibraltarian immigrants to the United States. So long as these six categories remain an anomaly, there will be continuing applications by users, such as myself, who were unaware of the earlier discussion. I believe that the renaming of these six falls entirely within the criteria for Speedy renaming, and would urge upon you to withdraw your objection. Furthermore, if and when, you have the time and energy to propose an omnibus change of name of all the 500 or so categories in this group, I will be among the first to support you and offer you every assistance. I would add that I have no particular interest in these six categories but merely came across them and notice (as, no doubt, will others) that there were out of sync with the others in the group. Cheers Davshul (talk) 12:17, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
- Davshul, I'm sure you are acting in good faith, and that's fine in principle, but these categories have already been to CFD. I don't like speedy renaming being used to produce a result which has already been proposed at CFD and not adopted. That applies no matter what the topic, because the speedy process is supposed to be a lightweight way of applying a broad consensus, not of bypassing consensus-formation on topics which have already been contested. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:26, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

- Oppose. Head article is at National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:56, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
- Comment. At first, I just wanted to correct the spelling errors in 'Institute' and 'Tiruchirappalli' but later i thought a comma might be appropriate. I did change the head article title to introduce a comma but another editor reasoned in the edit summary that the official webpage didn't display a comma and changed it back. However, I still think a comma is necessary due to the following:
- Oppose. Head article is at National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:56, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
1. It is a National Institute of Technology located at Tiruchirappalli and its name is just National Institute of Technology. The city name is only necessary to differentiate this institue from other National Institutes of Technology located at various other cities. Also please note that other Institutes of National Importance like the Indian Institutes of Technology have the city name as a integral part of the institue name like IITD, IITM etc. But this is not the case for the NITs.
2. Here's the Act of Parliament that recognized NITs as Institutes of National Importance. It clearly mentions the correct name of all the NITs including the comma.[1]
3. The official webpage is maintained by a webteam made of 3rd and 4th year students[2] and although I am sure that they provide accurate info on the website, a missing comma or punctuation wont be a high priority. In this regard it is better to go by the official communication put out by the administration of the institute like tender advts., recruitment notices etc. like here.[3]and[4]
4. One more important pointer to the exact name of the institute is the official contact address provided by it. It makes it clear whether the institute name includes the city name or not. As can be seen here,[5], it mentions the city name seperately from the institute name viz. Natioanal Institute of Technology. In contrast see IITD address here,[6] where they mention the institute name viz. IITD and then mention the city name, New Delhi seperately.
5. I also propose that the names of cities be removed entirely from some NITs wikipage titles that have been named after eminent persons like Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad, Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur, Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat for the reason that the names of all these institutes are already unique and dont need the city name to further identify/differentiate them.
P.S :I am not able to bring everything in the same indent. Kindly format them if you can. --Mgtm7m (talk) 21:55, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Ready for deletion
Check Category:Empty categories awaiting deletion for out of process deletions. In most cases, these will need to be nominated for discussion and the editor who emptied the category informed that they should follow the WP:CFD process.
Once the renaming has been completed, copy and paste the listing to the Ready for deletion section of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Manual.
