Westminster High School is a large, academically and athletically formidable high school located in Westminster, Maryland, United States. The school has an enrollment of approximately 1,900 students, down from the 2,300 students it had before the opening of two new high schools in the area. It is the largest in Carroll County and one of the largest in the state of Maryland.
The school was established in 1899 and moved to its present location in 1971. Among its students are several who have received state-wide publicity. The school is regarded as a superior institution among other Marylanders, and far surpasses its sister schools in academic achievement and athletic prowess. In 2005, the Westminster Owls varsity football team played in the class 3A finals of the state tournament for the first time since 1976, losing in double overtime.
The current principal is Mr. John Seaman.
Marching Band
The Westminster High School "Owls" Marching Band is an extremely sucessful organization within the school. It is the first band from Maryland to participate in a Bands of America competition, including the Grand National Championships held in the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, IN. It recently won the Atlantic Coast Championship, a TOB sanctioned competition, in 2002 and won a Bands of America Regional competition in 2003. It has participated in the Bands of America Grand National Championship for 2 years, and has placed 21st and 37th respectively for 2004 and 2005. This years field show was entitled "Impressions of Japan" and consisted of three parts, "Honor, Beauty, and Power"

Sniper shootings
During the 2002 Beltway sniper attacks, state officials worried that the school would be a particularly tantalysing target for John Allen Muhammad, and security measures were taken. For several weeks, the large lobby in the school was cleared of all personel and extracurricular student activities were canceled. These restrictions were lifted upon the snipers' capture.
