Filming took place between August 2013 and February 2014 in Burnaby (interiors) and Agassiz (exteriors), in British Columbia.[8]
Broadcast
On May 12, 2014, Fox announced that Wayward Pines would premiere in 2015 as mid-season replacement.[1] The series was picked up for broadcast by Fox in the United Kingdom,[9] and by FX in Australia.[10]
Fox made the pilot available on demand and through various online outlets from April 23 to April 30, 2015 in what the network called "the first-ever global preview event". The series subsequently debuted on May 14, 2015 simultaneously in more than 126 countries in what Fox called "the world's largest day-and-date launch for a scripted series ever".[11] Episodes air first in Australia.[12]

U.S. Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke awakens from a car accident on the outskirts of Wayward Pines, Idaho. After entering town and collapsing in a coffee shop, he recalls driving with Agent Stallings, searching for Agents Hewson and Evans. Beverly, a bartender, gives him a note with an address where he finds the decaying corpse of Agent Evans, which he reports to an uninterested Sheriff Pope. When Ethan is subsequently hospitalized, psychiatrist Dr. Jenkins suggests surgery, but Beverly helps him escape. In Seattle, Dr. Jenkins meets with Ethan's boss Hassler and tells him everything is going as planned. Ethan's wife Theresa wonders if he has run off with Agent Kate Hewson. Ethan finds Kate in Wayward Pines, but she claims to have been there for 12 years. He steals a car to leave town, only to discover that a high fence surrounds the town. Sheriff Pope tells him that he cannot leave.

Despite Pope's ordering him to remain in his hotel room while Evans' death is investigated, Ethan goes to the morgue to inspect Evans' clothing to find a journal with a map of the area. He also learns that Evans was married and speaks with his widow, who claims her husband committed suicide in front of her. Ethan inspects the map to find a way past the fence noted on the map, and he and Beverly plan to escape after removing tracking devices implanted in them. Meanwhile, Theresa and Ben set out for Idaho to find Ethan. Before Ethan and Beverly can escape, they are invited to dinner by Kate and her husband Harold. There, Beverly slips and mentions something from her past, breaking one of the town's rules. She panics, and she and Ethan leave; Kate tells Harold she is sure they will run. Phones around town begin to ring, and the townspeople are mobilized to search for Ethan and Beverly. They separate. Beverly is caught, and then executed by Pope in front of the entire town.

Kate warns Ethan that he has been given a rare second chance after Beverly's execution. Theresa and Ben drive to Wayward Pines, but Pope waylays them en route. While attempting escape, Ethan finds a garage with Theresa's car. Pope finds and drugs Ethan, who later awakens in the hospital. Before Ethan can explain what is going on to Theresa, he meets Kate in the woods by his newly assigned home, where she explains that she tried to escape for years, but the only way to survive is to play along. Ben sees Ethan and Kate together and tells Theresa. Theresa and Ben try to leave, but Pope stops them. Ethan defends them, eventually killing Pope with his own gun. Ethan opens a gate in the perimeter fence with Pope's remote, but before the Burkes can drive out, something enters and drags Pope's body beyond the fence. Hearing bestial cries, Ethan closes the gate.

The Burkes drive back to Wayward Pines, and Ethan and Theresa talk, agreeing to play the role of a "happy family", and Ben receives a school uniform, beginning his attendance at the local school. Ethan takes on his new role as the Sheriff, and Arlene brings a cake while Mayor Fisher also congratulates Burke on his new role. Ethan asks who appointed him, but receives only cautions in response. Ben is welcomed to school by teacher Maggie Fisher, the Mayor's wife, and Ethan finds out that she was a former hypnotherapist after reading through a hidden stash of personal files on the residents. Pam brings in Peter McCall, an alleged insurgent, and demands a reckoning but Ethan refuses. Maggie quizzes Ben about his home and family, while Theresa visits Kate in her toy store. Ben walks home with a girl after school, Amy, and she later visits him for an evening walk. The Burke parents meet Jenkins in the woods, where Jenkins states that reckonings are a necessary evil. Ethan takes McCall out to the wall, where McCall commits suicide by the electrocuting himself. Back home, Ethan tells Theresa he plans to leave to get help, and he leaves to climb the rock face to escape, atop of which a humanoid figure awaits.
