Vazhunnavar (lit. 'ruler'), also rendered Vazhunnor or Vallunavar, is a Malayali title of nobility denoting a major, even semi-sovereign naduvazhi; it is one step below Raja, which is often a title those styled vazhunnavars come to obtain. The most internationally famous example is that of the historical Boyanore of Badagara, as in European transcription, who was in fact the dispossed Porlathiri granted a sovereign haven by long-ago Kolathiri in-laws. After 1750, the Boyanores of Badagara[1] reverted to their ancient and traditional style - Porlathiri Raja of Kadathanadu[2] - with the acquiescence of the Kolathiri.[3]
Other instances include the Ayinhat and Koothali Nairs, traditional co-rulers of Payyormala, who, when an ancestral Ayinhat princess who married the Kottayam Raja persuaded him to part with some of his dominions for his own children, were deeded Kottathara and Kurumbala, and raised to the rank of Vazhunnavar[4].
The third sthanam of the Thiyya Mannanar dynasty uses the rank of Vazhunnavar.
