Varoujan Garabedian (Varadjian Garbidjian) is a former member of Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA).
He was born in 1954 in Kamishli, Syria, into a family of Armenian refugees from the Armenian Genocide.
For his role in July 15, 1983 bombing of a Turkish Airlines check-in desk at Orly airport, Paris, which killed 8 and wounded 61,[1] he was tried and convicted in Créteil, France, and, on March 3, 1985, was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.[2]
After spending 17 years in jail, he was released in 2001 on the condition that he was deported to Armenia.[1][3] The mayor of Yerevan, Robert Nazarian, had pledged to provide him with employment and accommodation, and in Yerevan Garabedian had a meeting with Prime Minister Andranik Markarian, who expressed happiness at his release.[1].
Presently Garabedian lives in Dilijan, Armenia. According to Garabedian:
The action at the Orly airport was carried out in response to the execution (by hanging) of Levon Ekmekjian in Istanbul in 1982. We planned to blow up the Turkish Airlines plane, which was to transport high-ranking representatives of the Turkish secret services, as well as generals and diplomats. As a result of the action that we carried out 10 Turks were killed and 60 were injured.[4]
