Huang Mulan
Hi. Thanks for your comments on the Huang Mulan AfD discussion. I thought I was going insane (I mean, of course, Xinhua churns out propaganda, but you simply can't write about modern China without it). Atchom (talk) 22:07, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Atchom: Unfortunately most Wikipedia editors (even some administrators) are focused on entertainment, sports, and other pop culture topics, and are totally unfamiliar with academic practices. I even ran into an admin who thought news articles were more reliable than academic books. Sigh. -Zanhe (talk) 22:16, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Bullshit
The article Guan Shu Xian is as good as its equivalent Cai Shu Du, with the same quality of sources. I don't think I need to give any more sources since the article I've linked it to already contains all that information and more. And there are no independent sources at all about Guanshu that do not deal with the broader Three Guards Rebellion since this character is not very famous.
On Queen Jiang/Qiang, the name is not wrong. FYI it can be written in more than one way, as most things in Chinese. Saying Queen Jiang is extremely confusing because literally half of all Zhou dynasty queens have been surnamed Jiang due to the blood-alliance between the Ji and the Jiang. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Es157 (talk • contribs) 14:14, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Es157: 1. Yes, Cai Shu Du is also garbage, but it was created ten years ago, when the quality standard of Wikipedia was much lower. More recently, editors who repeatedly add unsourced or poorly sourced material can be blocked or topic-banned. 2. Queen Qiang is wrong. Although Chinese names can often be romanized in different ways, and 姜 can be written Jiang or Chiang, but Qiang is never correct. 3. Using a profanity in reply to my friendly notice is rude and not helpful. -Zanhe (talk) 08:39, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
- I think the purpose of this site is to do exactly what I've been doing lately. Any well-written article that is informative and true is not garbage, and you should appreciate them. Bashing everything people try to do here for any reason is only repelling contributors. The information is there anyway so the simpler the better. No one who uses Wikipedia for a reading is interested in looking for individual pages of tens of different unaccessible books they never heard of. This site does not enjoy a reputation of being an Oxford-standard academic encyclopedia, just a popular quick info source. If you think they should have better sources, improve them. A simple article is always better than no article on a topic.
- @Es157: Wikipedia will never reach the quality of academic publications, but it's our job to keep the information at least verifiable and point people to reliable sources when they need more information. Unsourced and unverifiable stuff is close to worthless, as it can be (and often is) simply wrong. And I find it baffling that for someone who claims to have access to multiple sources, you barely bother to add any to your articles. Why don't you show a few reliable sources that refer to Queen Jiang as Queen Qiang? I've never seen one myself. -Zanhe (talk) 02:17, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher) 姜 is never "Qiang"; not even in the postal romanization (which would be Kiang, similar to Wade-Giles). And the 姜 in 姜后 is the same as the surname of the royal family of Zhou, I am not sure what makes it "confusing". I'll probably take action if this kind of misguided effort on disregarding policies and naming conventions continues. Alex Shih (talk) 03:13, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
