By the way, what image are you seeking to use on Wikipedia? I've had a few battles over photos, and there are some tricks to getting a photo that Wikipedia will accept. Debbie W. 04:23, 12 May 2012 (UTC) |

::Hi Debbie W. Thanks for your help and reply. Yeah. Funny how people's photos are being used roughshod all over the internet, but then when someone wants to do something good with them, like attribute them to intelligent well written articles, they fall under scrutiny. But, yeah. I agree. Things have just become ridiculous. Aside from that, I was looking for a photo of former CEO of American Airline, Robert Crandall. --XB70Valyrie (talk) 07:49, 13 May 2012 (UTC) |

File source problem with File:Robert Crandall.jpg
Thank you for uploading File:Robert Crandall.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. Copyright Questions
I saw your comments on the copyright question page that Wikipedia makes it profoundly difficult to use photos. I agree that the current Wikipedia image policy is crazy, but it has more to do the Copyright Act of 1976 and the DMCA than Wikipedia. Traditionally, items were only copyrighted if they were published with a copyright notice, and only individuals or organizations that directly violated copyright law were subject to lawsuits.
The Copyright Act of 1976 turned several hundred years of law on its head, and said that everything published is copyrighted unless the author specifically releases it into the public domain. With the invention of the internet, this law has become very problematic. Although the copying of photos from websites goes on every day, 99% of pictures posted online are copyrighted, even if the person who posted them never thought about copyright.
DMCA made third-parties such as Wikipedia financially liable if editors violate copyright law, and the host website does not correct the violation. The Wikimedia Foundation has about $25 million per year in total revenue from donations, and they have no desire to have that money eaten away by lawsuits.
